I got my first car in November. This winter has been great so far, and I've got the garage to myself. We had a snow/ice storm the other night, but I was working nights and my parents were working days so I just took their car while my new car was nice and snug in the garage. Feelsgoodman.

Last year when we didn't get above freezing for several consecutive days, my suspension froze solid. Every bump felt awful. After a couple days of that I had to find a garage to park it in to let it thaw.

Get winter tires. Seriously. Your tires are the only part of the vehicle that actaually touches the road. If they can't transmit force you're fucked. Also, don't just get the cheapest winter tires. Find out what is good in the size you need and get those.
As for driving, remember that 4wd doesn't make your braking distance any shorter. When in doubt go slow, especially aroud corners. When in doubt plan a bit more time.
As fun as it is, drifting around is something that should not be done in traffic or in turns you don't really know well.
You might also want to keep some fuel in the tank all the time, there's always a chance of getting stuck for hours in winter (typically because someone thought their low intellect would make them immune to physics), and you don't want to turn off the heating during that.

Winter tires help in all situations. Typically the more you spend the better tires you get, and there is rarely anything to actuall save on buying cheap winter tires
Keep your distance from other motorists even more than you would during the summer

Been to texas for outdoor labor, and live in the north...only mexicans don't complain about the heat, and I got along well with em. I'd rather keep you asshats out of the north though, for real...I was there last year when the blizzard came down with me. You dipshits killed yourselves on less than 3" of snow.

I enjoy driving in the snow in my FWD hatchback, it's the other drivers I don't like. When it's just me on a road I have fun, skiing around corners and whatnot.
The salt sucks, but rust isn't as big an issue on newer cars so I'm not too worried.
