What does /o/ think of this? My buddy wants a muscleish classic car, we've been looking for almost 6 months with not a whole lot of luck. We saw this today and he kinda liked it, but it's a bit outside of the ideal muscle car era, and a little underpowered, but it's in good shape and the guy wants $5500 for it. It was mentioned somewhere or another that this car was considered one of the last true muscle cars of the muscle era. Does that statement hold up?

So /o/, what do you think of the 78 dodge magnum?
>>
It's got the 360 with a four barrel carb by the way
>>
>>14143011
>$5500
>for that

Worth $550 tops
>>
Foxbody came out the very next year so yeah it's safe to say it represents the end of muscle. Is it a manual? Is this something he may want to do an engine rebuild on eventually? How's the rust?

$5500 is a lot for that car.
>>
The other car we're looking at, but is kind of a long shot is a 1970 torino with the 351 Cleveland. It's 5k but is about 1000 miles away from us and my friend is kinda sketched out about buying a car without looking at it first, and neither of us can get out there.
>>
>>14143044
Dude there are definitely $5000 muscle cars less than 1000 miles away from you. Where do you live?
>>
>>14143039
But why anon?
>>14143043
From the pictures it looks pretty solid, visible rust, the engine probably won't get rebuilt though because neither of us are quite at that level yet. It's an automatic.

I have the same engine in my 71 fury and it's not bad for power but that was before emissions kicked in
>>
>>14143061
South west Wisconsin, normally the muscle car market dies off in the winter, but we keep looking.

My buddy is kind of specific in what he wants. Can't be a cutlass, cant be a four door, needs to come with a v8 that is over 300cid.
He really wants a 2door Galaxie or a 2 door biscayne but you can really only get those for a decent price in a 4 door
>>
Here's the CL guys

Sub $1000 car for sure. It is not a classic and never will be. It looks rough, has a bad paint job, bad modern Charger wheels, and an anemic malaise-era engine. $5500 is boomer-style "I know what I got" money for this crapbox. Find something different, I beg you.

I agree it probably isn't a 5500 dollar car but 1000 bucks might be an an overstatement. Your right though, the wheels are fucking gay.
And the poster did do the type in all caps thing.

You think he should pass? What's the difference between one of these and like a mid 70s nova?

Just buy a fucking 1500 corolla and save money while you look for a real classic car. dont settle after only 6 months on some shit heap.

I'm on it, Buddy. Let's do one at a time and you give me your knee jerk reaction

http://janesville.craigslist.org/cto/5351469137.html

This one still seems overpriced to me but if you're willing to learn to tune it it'd probably be a beast. Engine LOOKS built but hard to say sure.
>>
>>14143295
Firstly I'm not buying, I already got my classic car. Secondly My buddy already has two other cars, this isn't out of necessity, this is something to hoon around in.
I get that this is a malaise era car but I don't understand the instantaneous hatred these cars get some of them have potential.

This one's a fucking pimpmobile with a 440. I cannot BELIEVE this is a coup with an interior like that but it is lol. Only $4000 and remember most of these guys can be bargained with considerably.
>>
>>14143335
I've seen that one, personally I love it, but my buddy has something against fuel cells and cars modified to be prostreet.

I appreciate the recommendation though, that car is really cool
>>
>>14143368
Seen that one too, if it were me I'd buy it and gut it for my Fury.
That's a nice car though, I forget what he didn't like about it, I'll show it to him again though, you don't see 440s go that cheap usually

http://appleton.craigslist.org/cto/5378735622.html

This fucker only has 38000 miles on it and it shows! This is a car someone without a lot of mechanical knowledge could easily maintain and enjoy for years and it's fucking pimp. Check out the goddamn gold interior. You rarely see cars this age in such nice original condition at an affordable price
>>
>>14143405
Haven't seen that one, isn't it weird how cheap classic luxury cars go? My friend isn't a big fan of that style though, I'll show it though and let you know what he thinks

There's a fucking Chevelle in his price range in Chicago. Just went up 14 hours ago.

Still needs a lot of love but it's gettin' there.
>>
try looking for an 80's ford coupe
330 with 4 speed manual
mean little sleeper
could put foxbody parts on it
>>
>>14143434
I showed that one to him too, he wasn't sure about it, I'll have to get back to him about it. For some reason he likes the 78 magnum more, just caught his eye.
What's the deal with that chevelle anyway? You never see them go that cheap in a coupe with the 326? Something has to be up with it.

What do you think anon?

There's a Toronado with only 57000 miles in Minneapolis

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/cto/5358965286.html

I love the front ends on these cars. I think they're unpopular because they're FWD. Weird stuff.
>>
>>14143467
I know right? A few years ago I would have killed for one of those. The fwd is pretty off putting though, any idea on how they actually handle?

I think it's not finished. Probably needs a bunch of suspension work but that's just my guess. If a 78 Magnum turns his head more than a Chevelle though I dunno what he really wants. Definitely show him the Lincoln though.

http://muskegon.craigslist.org/cto/5368299908.html

Here's a total shitbox of a Comet for only $1300 that would leave lots of money to dump into it but if he doesn't like the Chevelle I doubt he'll like this.
>>
>>14143480
better than rwd cars of the period

the fwd actually made it better
>>
Ok, I'm out. If your friend prefers that horrifyingly bad '78 Magnum to any of the awesome stuff anons have posted he simply cannot be helped.
>>
>>14143523

rofl ok dude
>>
>>14143508
Nah he likes chevelles a lot but something about that car he didn't like
>>
>>14143525
Well thanks for the effort dude, I'll show him the cars though
>>
>>14143480
Sprung like a boat, only marginally better than most landyachts of the era. It's better than most FWD cars because the engine is longitudinal and thus it has better F/R weight balance than a typical transferse FWD engine.

The Toronado is the poster child for cars that should have never had 4-wheel drum brakes, though. It's a car that literally cannot stop from top speed in a panic-brake situation; the brakes overheat before it reaches 0 MPH. Wouldn't be so bad except you haven't been able to buy decent replacement brake shoes at a parts store for like 30 years, so it's guaranteed to have shitty chinese compound shoes.
>>
>>14143011
To answer op's question , that particular car is not really a "musclecar" , more like a luxobarge that looks sporty . They raced Magnums in NASCAR in'78 so it does have somewhat of a heritage to it , but bear in mind this was also the era Chrysler was making car so bad , they almost went bankrupt a few years later . This is also a "Lean Burn" engine so bigger cubic inches do not translate in high horsepower . The Lincoln mentioned in the thread might possibly have a 460 but look up the specs on it , it has no cahunas in the hp/tq department . The Magnum would be interesting if your buddy was handy with a wrench and willing to build a motor for it . It weighs a LOT ,so don't expect to do any savage burns at the strip or find a lot of model specific hi-po parts although some are available in police packages . It's gonna take a ton of cash to make it fast and money better spent on a different car . Tops , car is worth *maybe* 2k . I wouldn't do it myself.

They actually do handle better, stock anyway assuming you're not going to be drifting all over the place which he's probably not gonna be since he's looking at automatics.

This is what we looked at last, he really wanted this one. This is pretty much exactly what he was looking for but it turned out to be way too good to be true. The car was actually super rusty and the tranny leaked like a bastard
>>
>>14143553
The "lean burn" is not the reason for the low horsepower; the lean burn system in these cars is only active at part-throttle cruise. Under heavy/full throttle it switches back to regular mode.

The primary reason for the low HP is the same as most malaise-era engines: a laughably low compression ratio (8.4:1 in this case), to deal with the shitty octane ratings associated with new-for-the-1970's unleaded gas.
Secondary reason is that they were tuned/cammed for low-RPM power, because they were always installed paired with a 3-speed automatic and extremely tall rear gears - often the engine wouldn't hit 3000 RPM in 1st gear until 45 mph or higher. This particular engine hits peak torque at just 1600 RPM, and this particular car came with a final drive ratio of 2.71.
>>
>>14143628
Dude honestly if that's what he's looking for you should just talk him into getting the Newport. It's right by you, you could quite honestly use "I'm going to have to spend money putting it back to stock" as a bargaining chip and I think once he drove it he'd think twice about bashing "pro street mods"

I owned a 1979 Chrysler 300 as a first car. Was a great driver. 360 4 barrel and 3.55 rear end. Bought it for $600 in 2010. I wouldn't pay more than $4000. If you live in a state that doesn't require emission testing then you can get some real power out of them. If not then look for a 1971-74 b body Mopar.

Keep in mind this was a week after I bought it and it was sitting for over a year. And this was at bandimere, the highest altitude drag strip. By the end of the drags it cleaned up the carb and was going a full Second faster.

Thankfully WI doesn't do emissions, he is interested in it, but I told him pretty much what you told me, it isn't really worth over 4.

I'm keeping an eye out for a Galaxie though, that would probably be a bit nicer honestly
