I finally stopped being a NEET and got a semi decent paying career. I was looking up semi-exotic cars and was surprised to see some of these are actually in my budget. Is owning something like this as an everyday car suicide? My city doesn't have a lot of inclines but the winters are a little harsh.
>>
>>14140491
>Is owning something like this as an everyday car suicide?

Yes. Get the evora if you want a DD'able lotus.
>>

>>14140491
>being this insecure as to buying a sports car for a DD instead of something reliable and comfortable and efficient.

Small mid engined two seaters are absolutely awful daily drivers. Terrible awful interior space and luggage space, truckfags and SUV moms will -constantly- overlook you, suspension makes every pothole shake your spine.

While we're on the topic I see the boxster S as another choice in every list of "affordable exotics". is this drivable, or a shit choice? I'm not trying too hard to pretend to be rich with middle class income I'm just curious. I thought these sort of cars retain their value for a long time but they seem to nosedive and I would like to take advantage.
>>
>>14140547
the 2+2 does. The evora is also not as stiff, the seats are not as hard and the iterior isn't as spare.
>>
Not OP, but are you guys aware some people DD motorcycles? There's far worse everyday vehicles than a 2-seater sports car.
I'm not saying an Elise would be a good DD, but there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

Maybe Los Angeles fag do, but that's a very small, isolated part of the world. Such a thing is impossible in most places, starting with those that get snow in the winter.
>>
>>14140602
Most bikes are actually comfy as fuck I would DD one if there wasn't shit weather half the year.
>>
>>14140616
It's a somewhat common thing in the UK.
The point is that if you don't need to carry much stuff and have a tolerance for a bumpy ride there's not really a problem.
Of course, it'd be easier to buy a cheap Honda for DD duties and an Elise for fun. Unless of course you need your car to be a status symbol.
>>

Porsche is shit, especially the cayman. Fuckers can't even make an engine that doesn't strip itself. Especially the 04 - 08 models, which by the looks of things are in your budget. DonĂ½ get the cayman, repeat, don't get the cayman.

I had 50k and bought a cts-v coupe. Way better of a daily driver. I wanted an exige s but after driving it I realized I couldn't live with it every day. I'd get one of I could have 2 cars. Next choice would've been a TT RS. Porsches in that price range weren't that great.
>>
>>14142429
I saw some 2006 and 2007 exiges for under 40. I'm open to any model of any kind. Not gonna run out and buy it tomorrow, was just surprised this kind of car was even an option.

>>14142506
What specifically made you feel you couldn't live with it? anything to do with what other people said itt, suspension or snow?

The suspension is stiff, its loud, its tiny enough to make you fear for your life in bad traffic
Getting in and out is awkward due to the wide frame on the sides of the seat
No storage capacity
I only test drove it so I can't speak to this but I've heard they leak badly in the rain.

All that said I still really want one, it is an amazing car, but if I'm driving it every day I'd rather a really absurdly fast car that's also really comfortable to live with.

Have you guys really never driven anything but econo shitboxes, or are you just trying to justify your "practical" car to yourself? I understand if you have multiple kids or some kind of disability an Elise may not work, but other than that there is 0 reason not to, the Elise is more manageable on the road than any car I've DD'd over my 13 years of driving including living on a steep street in SF and commuting 40 miles a day.

Guys, nobody is saying you CAN'T DD an elise/exige, of course you can. The problem is when it's raining out, or you're stuck in traffic, or there's snow on the road, or you're stuck behind a granny doing 40 in a 55.
Times like this you're not going to be enjoying the fact that you're in a lightweight, super well balanced, high performance sports car.
You're going to be wishing you picked something different.

Also, something nobody else here mentioned: attention. Unless you have some serious self-esteem issues and having everyone looking at you will make you feel better; an elise/exige is not fun to daily drive.
My car already gets a lot of attention and it is way more boring than an elise. It gets kind of old when people are constantly staring you down and at stoplights you have people rolling down their windows to ask: "WHAT IS THAT?" "HOW FAST DOES IT GO?" "IS THAT THE ONE WITH THE CORVETTE MOTOR?"

Can't even imagine what an elise would get.
>>
check if used ATS-V are in your price range
if not then CTS-V are inexpensive for your budget, plenty of room to mod
C6 (maybe z06)
cobra
porsche carrerra 996
used maseratis
used AMG
used M series
nothing the japanese can offer in your price range
also consider used jaguars
90's ferarri
salvage title bentley (36k if you can find one)
90's astons
don't let anyone tell you the reliability on these are horrendous, the horror stories you hear are because people don't want to shell out the money to make the regular maintenance on their car because they could afford the down payment but could only afford maintenance for a ford taurus
i hope you meant 40k was your disposable income and not your yearly

348, 355, Testarossa/512TR all require engine out services every 3 years, cost ranging from 7-12k. Quattroporte/138/GranTurismo clutches last at most 20k miles and are 6-8k to replace. The Bentley and Aston Martin suggestions are even more ridiculous. The only thing remotely manageable for someone looking at cars in the price range of an Elise are the C6s and Cadillacs
>>
>>14142730
>And I'd sooner DD a newer elise than something like a base skoda rapid
Nobody is comparing that, of course an elise would be better to DD than an old shitbox. Comparing it with other $40k cars is a different story when there is a ton of really nice shit in that price range.
>As for attention who gives a shit

Well duh, I wasn't trying to imply it will be better than a 5er as a DD, but that its still literally better than many a shitboxes unless you have massive snow/shit roads/horrible traffic

Winter isn't a problem unless you are a complete retard at driving. I drive an RX8, it is rear wheel, and if there is so much as a sprinkle on the ground, I spin/drift/slide everywhere. But because I'm not a retard, I control my slides, predict them, and for the most part avoid them unless I want to have fun. If you're not racing, drive slow and you won't have any problems.

I've driven alot of cars, and my s2000 is among my favorite of said cars, it's cheap to maintain, decent on gas despite what the official MPG would have you believe, it feels like a much more expensive car than it is, and not like "I bought a 5000$ bmw" feel, this genuinely feels like you're sitting in a 40,000$ car.
If you like low end torque and stop light racing is all that matters to you, get something else, if you like going to track days, or spirited canyon drives then this car is for you, and I promise you it won't let you down.

My Z pisses in your FRS's intake, fuck off queer.
Go ahead and benchrace. I've owned more vehicles than you've seen years, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the FRS. The interior is 90s KIA tier too.

They are what got me interested in sports coupes again, but they are a letdown in reality. And I am a Toyota fanboi. The 370z blew the FRS away in the feels dept, that's why I bought one instead.

The 370z has Jap class with muscle acceleration, and the handling characteristics you'd expect from a traditional two seat rwd coupe making 330+hp at the crank.

You fell for the meme, while people who actually like cars and driving chose any number of quicker sharp handling cars in the price range.

>or you're stuck in traffic
What is this meme? Driving a stick in traffic is not bad.

>or you're stuck behind a granny doing 40 in a 55

Why would that take away from you enjoying your car? It's not like just because you have a sports car you speed from the moment you get behind the wheel. A slow drive is enjoyable.

>Times like this you're not going to be enjoying the fact that you're in a lightweight, super well balanced, high performance sports car.

You sound weird and that is really just some shit opinion there, mostly because you are telling other people they will not enjoy something because you don't enjoy it. I doubt you've ever really had the experience anyway.

>You're going to be wishing you picked something different.

No. Not really at all. In all those situations a sports car will be just fine and enjoyable.

>It gets kind of old when people are constantly staring you down and at stoplights you have people rolling down their windows to ask...

You know you can just ignore them and drive your car? I do it all the time, mind yourself and stop at other people, that would basically be inviting someone to converse with you yet you complain about it.

If you have the money OP, buy it. Enjoy it. Make sure it suits your lifestyle. If you aren't moving a ton of shit all the time, don't mind driving yourself and one other person around then fine. Actually in the passenger seat I've had two girls just make do plenty of times, they don't mind.

>>
>>14145091
>>14145106
I don't give a fuck about other people. What I meant by "suicide" was videos I've seen of ferrari and lambo owners carrying around wooden planks because the incline of a parking garage was too steep and they can't get out, or they can't even go over speed bumps at all, or if there was something weird about these that would make driving in snow 100% impossible.

It's obviously not going to be different from another RWD car which I have driven in extreme ice and snow. I see a lot of people going the posted max speed on snowy and rainy days, that's obviously fucking dumb no matter what you have. I don't need to tow, or move shit, or ever carry more than one other person ever. Again not gonna go out and buy it tomorrow but based on what I read outside of the money it is doable to have a semi-exotic as an everyday car.
>>
>>14145151
an elise is not any lower than your average mustang, 350z or camaro dummy

also learn to take speedbumps sideways
