Interested in getting a Volvo 240 - the last year of their production - 1993. What do you think about this car?
>>
Not commuting anymore. Just need to get to the school bus stop and grocery store.
>>
Bump, there's one for sale in my area, wanted to know the same thing. Fun/easy to work on? Easy to mod? Etc...
>>
>>14136669
I've not heard too many bad things. I'm sure the Volvo guys will chime in
>>
Later i5's, even the turbo ones are good like in the late 90's and early 00's v70. However their electricals are shite and will probably need to be replaced after 150k miles.
The 240's are solid fuckin machines though, snatch one up if you can.

I had a '93 wagon, probably the worst one ever made but it was still pretty solid. I bought it from the shittiest car lot imaginable, so bear that in mind. Most will be better than mine. It broke down on me more than once and left me stranded twice. In my 5 month ownership:
>timing belt fell off on day 2, tensioner was shot
>car kept dying randomly, eventually found a nigger rigged main fuse block with the main power wire just jammed in there
>car started dying when I let off the gas, progressed into dying even while accelerating, turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor
>needed new intake gasket
>O2 sensor gave a CEL
>transmission (auto) started slipping
>electrical short in tailgate somewhere near the hinge, would get very hot and the battery would drain within a couple days

Eventually I got tired of dealing with it. Sold it for $1000 and bought a civic and never looked back.

240s have the i4, hence the name- 2 door, 4 cylinder, with the last digit being number of doors (242- 2 door coupe [rare in the US], 244- 4 door sedan, 245- 5 door wagon). 2 series and 7 series both had the Volvo redblock engine which is fucking unkillable; depending on condition of the rest of the car and price OP should definitely jump on it if he wants a reliable transport.

Forgot to mention it had 150k miles and the worst tires ever made. It would get hektik in a light drizzle. Also it had a bad exhaust leak or something, my passengers would basically suffocate. It was the worst car I owned in terms of reliability, and the slowest, and I will never forget the way I felt when sitting at the side of the road not having a clue what was wrong with the damned thing, but I learned a lot about fixing things and I appreciate the experience I had with it.
>>
>>14138100
Oh yeah ofc i know, im just saying what i've experienced owning a few volvos.
Definately mercedes diesel-tier engines, will last forever.
>>
>>14138109
Goddamn, this makes me want a brick.

There's an '80 240 wagon with 110k and a clean as shit body 40 minutes from me, but I won't be able to get out that way to see it for another few days and I'm hoping against hope no one scaps it up before I can take a look.

>tfw have newer volvo wagon

I WANT AN OLD ONE

I just couldn't justify it
>>
>>14138198
I WANT TO. The only issue apparently is that the oil light blinks sometimes, but has for the past few thousand miles and doesn't seem to have a real cause why- some quick Googling tells me it could be something as simple as a corroded wire making contact and lighting it up, and he posted a video with the Craigslist ad that seems like it could be that.

The other thing is the tranny is the 4spd+overdrive and, uh, I have no idea how the override lever works or if it should be engaged in a gear or does it just act like another gear or what, and feel really stupid for not knowing how. The only manual cars I've driven have been standard 5 speeds.
>>
>>14138224
Volvo electronics like to fuck with you.

The overdrive thing i don't know for sure, but i would take it safe for the first time at least and push the clutch before switching it on.

240 seats are literally the most comfy seats on earth. That is all.

I'm used to electrical issues; my family has owned Chryslers for most of my life so retarded wiring setups (and having to fix them) are nothing new to me. It wouldn't be my daily driver anyway (not for a while, at least), so I'm fine with having to put some work into it.

I did notice there's no tach, but that's not a huge deal; apparently it's not difficult at all to get rid of the fuckhuge clock and wire in a tach (the wires are already there behind the clock, just not used!).

Suppose I'll ask the questions that don't need a thread thread about the overdrive.

>>14138280
Goddamn those look cozy.

Only other brick I've sat in was a 745 I was gonna buy but ended up passing on due to rust the owner hadn't told me about; the seats in that were wonderful, even with the tears and iffy padding. How adjustable are the seats in a 240, and if they aren't, how easy is it to reach everything? I'm a manlet so I usually have to ride with the seats all the way forward and up, and am sort of SOL if they don't go up as well to see over the dash.

I bought a 90 DL sedan about 7 months ago
Lots of mixed emotions so far, lots of good and bad to be said about it
However I did purchase it on a pretty small budget, so is not like I didn't expect it to have issues later on.
That being said I haven't spent that much money on it, more wasted time and frustration than anything else
I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid old brick that looks kinda cool. Also easy to work on, but parts aren't always readily available depending on where you live.
Just don't expect it to be that fast or fuel efficient.
I think 1993 is probably one of the best years to own as well but I don't know for sure

yes to all those questions. the cars are awesome. they have a huge aftermarket and turboing it would be one of the easiest cars to turbo.
>>
If you don't get a turbo you'll regret it. They're amazing cars but too slow stock.

>>14139010
define too slow

Yeah. I want my kids to stand out in the rain.

Have an '88, they rock but expect a bunch of small problems.

Seats have lumbar, forward & backward, seat bottom angle, and recline adjustments.

Seconding. I also have an '88, working on it now is easy as fuck. Decent aftermarket through IPD and a couple communities like Turbo Bricks (there are others, can't remember the names) where every problem that can possibly happen has already happened and been answered.

Mine came with a nig-rigged stereo that I'm taking out, busted water pump, broken air con and a clicking relay switch somewhere. All the belts need an adjustment and new front brake discs. Plastics will pretty much crumble in your hand by now so look for replacements if you're bothered by it. They're all pretty common issues and not that hard or expensive to fix (apart from brake discs or new light assemblies), yours might have a different set of issues. Once it's fixed, give it a patch up with some paint and spray any dull parts (bumpers, window trims, etc) with black enamel, a nice wash and polish and it'll look good as new. Check the engine bay somewhere for the color code.

You can swap in a V8 or a Volvo T5R if you gotta go fast.
