dude bro mang homie you don't understand. a cayman could be had for like, 30 grand. that's a rear engine porsche for the same price as a corvette! and it's actually considered a nice car! think about all the pussy i'd slay in it if i kept my 3ds and fedora at home, it'd be amazing.

Unless I'm insane that's a Boxster with a hardtop; Cayman didn't come until the 997 model.

OP there's no such thing as a fake Porsche (Panamera/Cayenne aside), that's just bullshit Porsche came up with to sell more 911s.

>>
>>14136331
Come on 924/944 aren't in the same league of non-Porscheness as the crossovers. They at least tried to be fun relatively upmarket sports cars. Sure you might say they didn't succeed, but at least their goal was somewhat Porsche.

The same cannot be said for the other cars on that lust.
>>
>>14135612
Every single one of those cars comes with a defective engine with a very blatant expiration date. And when your motor goes it will cost more to replace than your boxster is worth. There is a reason they are so cheap now.

Just google "Porsche IMS Bearing"

Utter. Fucking. Garbage.
>>
>>14136464
isn't that a five dollar fix. how is that such a big deal.
>>
>>14136464
All of the affected cars got a new engine under warranty, so higher mileage ones most likely had their engine replaced already.
How about you google your shit first.
>>
>>14135612
cool mr2, anon! does your wife drive it?
>>
>>14136502
The bearing can fail at anytime you porsche shill. This wasn't a "new" engine only type issue you idiot motors are still failing left and right today at any mileage. As a matter of fact, the issue only gets worse with time as this is a lifetime bearing and the more miles the more likely the seal will fail or a particulate will enter the runs and rape the bearing surface. Now try googling your shit first you fucking moron.
>>14136486
Its thousands of dollars as you have to drop the transmission. In a mid-engined car. Bearing kits themselves are (relatively) cheap but the labor is very expensive. Best bet is to gamble and just replace it when the clutch is done.
>>
>>14136502
>warranty
Yeah that is why there was a class-action suit that Porsche recently settled out of court that came with super restrictive date and mileage restrictions further fucking over any current drivers for all time for claims.

Face it, Porsche fucked their owners. Bad.

>>14136680
I'm a bmw fanboy believe me subframe issues began far before the e46. Difference is this defect is fatal. And no, taking an engine out is hard for 99% of people who lack the time, space, tools, or expertise. If none of those apply to you then buy the car and replace the bearing for nothing but a few hundred and sweat equity.

Do you really think Jimmy the accountant who doesn't even know where the engine is in a Boxster is gong to be browsing /o/ and making threads about it?
>>
>>14136724
Yes. Otherwise Jimmy wouldn't be asking a malaysian crochet board for auto advice. Jimmy also lacks a garage, lift, and even the most basic tools by my reckoning like 99% of the public in general. I mean half the threads on this board are about the FRS and weeb shit. I don't any faith.
>>
>>14136331

Gez someone really badly wanted a cayman/carrera but accidently bought a 986 boxster.
>996.2 head lights
>Hard top
>Carrera wheels
All this on what looks like a late model 986 (has the 2002 smoked indicators).

Imo the 986 is a friendly entry point into sports cars (great handling and okay power) you are better of saving your money for a 996.2 Turbo. Make sure its manual. Those things will retain their value for many years to come.

As for the IMS haters, I've seen polls that show as little as 10% failure rate on vehicles with 100k miles. If its manual just replace thr bearing when the clutch is due.

What a shit attitude. What if OP wants to learn?

Bought this turd when I was 19 and didn't know much about cars besides changing wipers and topping up fluid.
The IMS going out has been the least of my concerns for the past couple years of ownership
>>
>>14135612

Just be sure to have the money for it, and 3x the money you paid for it for maintenance.
>>
>>14136761
I'm sorry but a 10% chance (at best) of your car become scrap value is absurd. If this car had any nameplate on it besides Porsche no one would even entertain such thoughts of lunacy. Buying an early model which hasn't had the bearing replaced is either signing up for thousands in labor or a game of catastrophic failure roulette.
>>14136767
OP should at the least be informed in his decision. This isn't the type of thing that should be neglected as you have done. Porsche sack riders I swear...

No, it's real.

Carreras are ok, but boxters are mass produced garbage priced at the same level as a GTR, a Vette and several others.

You would be fucking delusional to throw away money like that.

Ask any fan and they will laugh at you for having either the SUV or a boxter.

If you're poor, you get the mid range carrera and no-one will look down on you. But if you buy the boxter, they know you're just another stupid idiot throwing his money away.

I don't think I could deal with every car over 250HP wanting to race me at every single red light, knowing I'd lose if I succomb. I'm pretty sure that alone would keep me from such a fantastic car. IMS issues can be a concern but honestly, if they defective, they would have failed already. I see it as really overblown. If you're looking for something that is fun to drive, go ahead. If you're looking for a status symbol, might as well keep looking.

The Macan and cayenne are just rebadged VW's tb'h.

The panamera just qualifies because it's smaller, not a crossover, and a unique platform.

The early 924's and even some early base model 944's yes I agree, they had an audi power plants. But the later models were actually pure porsche inside an out and while they're finicky 30 year old cars, they put out when they've been properly tended to.
>>
>>14139237
I've owned a 996 and a 944

Both were very reliable cars, but both needed lots of maintenance. Mostly preventative. I did all my own work and it averaged about $1500 a year for the 996 and $1000 a year for the 944.

944 wasn't bad but there are better out there. Cars may be cheap now, but porsche parts are worth more than gold. Any Porsche can bankrupt you if you don't take care of it.

I replaced an IMS and a RMS in a day. The 2002 Carrera I did it on now has 98k miles and is still running strong as a daily. Yes it's a fatal engine flaw but it has an easy fix and keeps the cars cheap.
