I need y'alls help. I refurbished the carb a few months back, never drove it after I replaced it. Now I have a problem. The throttle pedal accelerates the truck, but it doesn't return back. any idea what I can do? or where to look? I think it is an Autolite 1100-1V on my ford 300ci I6. Thanks!

Reporting in. Where's the damn family photo?

BTW Kit Kat, did you use a throttle return spring when remounting the carb? If not, go get the Help! Pack of like 6 springs so you can tune pedal feel on the return a bit. If not, you did not rebuild the carb correctly.

I'm not sure, know where it would be on the carb?
>>
>>14134638
Not too sure on an Autolite. I know on EB and Holley its built into the throttle behind the linkage bracket on the carb. There is another way, rig a return spring from your throttle to the block so it closes the throttle for you. It's a cheap fix, but very effective if done right.
>>
>>14134638
I just looked at your pic. Seems you have a return spring on the carb running to a bracket. Os that before or after the rebuild?

Like I thought. Look at your OP picture and see the medium size spring on the left rear of the carb in between the fuel lines? That's a return spring and I don't see one in either of the new pics. Like I said, 6 pack from a parts store for 10 or so bucks.

That doesn't sound bad at all, I was figuring maybe something like twin charging could be pretty cool for a build like that.

Look at the S130, most S30 Z cars are expensive, trash, or both. Triple Webers are cool, but Bosch Jetronic FI is better for even a non daily as keeping the carbs in sync over seasons can be a bear.

Well I was hoping to fix the rough idle problem while in gear with the fuel pressure regulator, but it only helped a bit. I just have no fucking clue what it could. The fuel idle mixture screws are adjusted for best vacuum, all the ignition components are fairly new. Vacuum gauge holds a steady 21" of HG when parked and I just took the carb off last week and gave it a really good cleaning. My fuel filter is a couple weeks old and it isn't very clogged yet.

I'm just stumped

I'm convinced that this Holley 4160 is just a hunk off junk. I don't really have another carb to use though, to see if it is the carb being a problem

Aside from the body styling the s13/14 is an infinity better car than those old datsuns that feel like the fucking doors are going to fall off.

If it's a GM block it will have the casting number like these pics on the back driver's side of the engine where the transmission bellhousing bolts up. That will give you the block info, but some engines and blocks shared casting numbers.

My car is pre-smog and also non-california spec. So no EGR or air injection crap. The back of my Hitachi has just 1 vacuum bleed that goes way too lean when connected. I need just 1 hose with a restricted vacuum jet and I'll be good to go.

Now this is interesting. I pulled the gas tank out of the Kingswood Ute and compared it to another.
The larger one is from the HQ, and the smaller one from the HZ. Both of them are pretty rough.
The HQ has been sitting for a while and has a lot of surface rust, no penetration thankfully.
The HZ tank has a lot of bodging. I assume the hose was to let off vapors because the actual port had been plugged up.

Should've took the air filter off but it's actually a Holley 670.. 86 Camaro. Daily driver /never ending project.
>>
>>14136878

670 vacuum secondary? Is the engine pretty mild? If so I'd drop down to a 600. Engine will probably actually run better.
>>
>>14136899
That's the one. It has a new 350 crate motor with mild cam, edelbrock performer intake, fuel pump, ignition upgrades, 700r4 with shift kit etc.
I've been tuning it back and forth and tweaking the timing. It ping'd, hesitated, stalled, and so on but I've actually gotten it pretty close now as far as the carb goes. Took it for a ride yesterday and it smoked the tires with just my pinky toe.
>>
>>14135468
Nice top end. Are you going to port them any further or leave them as boxed?
>>
>>14136958

What sort of RPM do you regularly run it up to or plan to? Under 5-6k RPM a mild 350 like that with an auto trans and vacuum secondary is probably going to run best overall with something like a classic 600. A 670 would be more suited for a upper mild 383.

>>14136032

Words out of my mouth. As for the idle, see how it does and after you adjust your floats and tell us what happens.
>>
>>14136108
Have you checked for any blockages in your vacuum advance line? If not give it a look see because if it is blocked, your overall ignition metering by RPM is reduced and can cause rough idle. could be a collapsed advance line as well.

I've just never seen that stock is all. But yeah that is a nice feature.
>>
>>14137330

I used to run a remote mount oil filter on my SBC so the filter was super easy to get to. Then I saw a drag car that had one burn to the ground when the hose failed. Even with a quick emergency response team on hand with tons of extinguishers blasting the car was fucked. Once that oil hit the headers the fiberglass front end just melted.
>>
>>14137278
True. And everything seems to be aright on the carb itself? does the rough idle sound like starvation of air/fuel or a rich condition? Any backfiring through the carb in gear? It seems like if we have ruled out all possibility of a timing issue (and I know you have) then carb seems to be the culprit. Any changes in running due to ambient temp changes? Hows she do above idle? Does it chug until it hits a certain rpm, or come to life when you hit the throttle off an in gear idle?

I'm sorry, with me, I have to usually see it with my own eyes, or hear it with my own ears to determine the issue. Keep plugging away.

yeah it's gotta be something carb related. The float levels are set perfectly and I pulled a few plugs and they looked fine, not too much carbon, not burning too lean. The fuel pump was over pressuring so I thought it was flooding at low rpm, hence why I put the regulator in today. No back firing of any sort and the engine doesn't seem to care whether it's cold out or not, it will still idle rough unless I crank up the idle speed.
I don't have a tach, so I'm guessing here, but when I try to lower the idle speed to where it used to be, maybe 800 rpm-ish, the whole engine shudders when in gear and at a stop. When I giver shit on the gas, the the carb seems to work just fine.
>>
>>14137552
So only roughness at idle? Saw that before in a dual strombergs and turned out to me one of the carbs' accel pump was frozen. Dunno if that helps tho
>>
>>14137607
Yeah definitely wouldn't be an accelerator pump.
The thing that's bugging me is I just cleaned the entire carb out, cause I have rust in my gas tank and no matter what, micro particles always get through my fuel filters. it wasn't even very dirty inside though.

I'll figure it out sometime. I'm just going to blame the carb for now
>>
>>14137638
What's your vacuum pressure looking like?
>>
>>14137638
If need be, and you don't want to hear this, try a second rebuild. Were you planning a tach anytime soon?

Just a thought, but have you adjusted the idle air at idle under load? Do you have a buddy with a tach you can use for an hour?

>>14137666
He said above it was 21"Hg
>>
>>14137674
my bad
>>
>>14137674
The carb is only a year old so I didn't do a rebuild, just a clean out. I'd like a tach, but have no where to mount one and they are too expensive for my taste. When I buy my own timing light I'll get one that tells you the rpm.

I haven't adjust the fuel idle screws under load, I don't have anyone that can give me a hand with it and I don't trust chocking the wheels.

I do have a very old Dwell meter that has an rpm gauge in it, but it's very iffy, just kinda jumps around, can't get a good reading

83 Corolla AE71 with a 4AC

"DID":
Removed stock carb covered in vacuum tube spaghetti. Replaced fucked hoses.

CURRENT TO DO:
Install a Weber 32/36 carb. Block off and/or remove all unneeded emissions hardware.
Install electric fan with thermostat controller so I don't have to remember to flip a switch. I have no experience with any wiring other than car stereo installation so it will be a learning experience.

FUTURE TO DO:
Remove power steering assembly and loop the lines. This is a small car, the PS is fucked, and I don't want to hunt down parts for manual conversion.
Suspension is 100% fucked. I will install daily driver grade AE86 parts.

Previous owner put on a POS Carb. No idea where the hell it came from, but it runs great besides some idle issues on the cold days. Besides that there are backfiring issues that are either due to the shite carb or something is off with my timing.
Also, I don't doubt that one of my cylinders has bad compression. Aside from these, not much. Just a dirty ass engine. Rebuild under 20k from previous owner, only driven a couple thousand since I've gotten it. Gotta spend a whole day just cleaning the shit off this engine. Dirty as hell.

I'd say it's in older restoration condition although still very clean. The owner is wanting $25,000 CAD. I don't know if it's worth pursuing. It's definitely a special truck being that it's the highest trim, a shortbed and all original.

When it's warm, only once or even not at all within a few minutes of starting. Once it's passed 2nd gear it never backfires again.

Dreaming of another g-body. I've owned 2 Monte Carlos already but I've had to get rid of them for some reason or another. Can't decide if I should just fire sale my dying DD and buy a 1500-200 bucket or try and save like 3-4 grand and get a less obvious bucket.

Either that or a hotrod someone tried to build on a $1000 budget. Clean ones start at like 6 grand now a days so you're always picking up someone's failed project.

pic is my first car ever. Some dude who knew little to nothing about cars tried to hop it up on the cheap and then sold it to the guy who I bought it from who only bought it to flog mercilessly on for 6 months until the temps expired. Was a great car to say the least, bought it for $1450 threw a $50 starter in it and a battery lead, drove it around for a few months, brother crashed it, then sold it to a nog from DC for $1600.

Not too bad, t5s fit the best. IIRC you just buy a new pedal assembly and master off jegs or summit or something for a malibu or el camino and they bolt right on. I think you have to beat the trans tunnel out a bit and have your drive shaft modified to fit. Not sure if a t5 is longer or shorter than a 200r4.

G-body El Caminos are by far the most common but they def carry a price premium over the regular coupes just like the Malibus.

This was monte #2

Very slight mods, but it's still not going to be the fastest engine. But it will still have tons of torque and last a long time.

At the price point of doing those mods to a 300, i could buy a whole 351w and be making even more power. Don't get me wrong, I love the 300, but modifying it must isn't cost effective for what you get.

BC Scottsdale reporting in. I'm moving back to my hometown today in the Fraser Valley, suite built into the top of a barn that has been converted by the owner into a 4-bay auto shop. He's a stock car racer (old RWD Corollas) and is also almost finished restoring his '68 Mustang (pictures inbound). It's a beautiful car, almost entirely stock, nothing fancy, not showroom quality, would make a great daily driver, and he's trying to sell it but I haven't asked him for a price yet as I'm afraid to hear the answer.

This is his Mustang. Very typical, but that's what I'd be looking for if I was to buy one. I could almost certainly buy it off of him for cash tomorrow but it would bring me dangerously close to an empty bank account. I'm gonna sit on the idea for a while, let it collect dust for a bit longer, consider my options. I'm a lot more likely to wait for an late 50s Apache to pop up, but the opportunity to get behind the wheel of this one is there, and I'm sleeping above it every single night for the foreseeable future.
