Finally getting our first snow of the season here in KC. First car I saw wrecked was an Xterra, he was taking a left onto the highway and spun out into the retaining wall. It rained last night then iced over and snowed on top of it.

High of 75°F today here in Alabama, and very rainy. Great day to take the miata out, with its summer tires equipped. Nothing like hooning on curvy, pothole-free, traffic-free Alabama backroads in the rain. Ontario here, had a lot of fun pulling HEKTIK SKIDZZZ on the powdered snow. But once the rain started, my snowtireless e36 was actually shit at going anywhere. Just do very light inputs on gas and brake. If you're driving a manual, start in second gear when things are very slippery. You'll be fine, just be patient and don't rush anything. Slow is fast in snow.
>>
>>14134571
Cars are easy. Semis with trailer that are floating is the real scary shit.
>>
>>14134648
>start in second gear

Woah I've never heard of this? Wont it stall? What about hill starts? Can I do a hill start without the handbrake like I normally do, but in snow?
>>
>>14134661
As soon as your tires are spinning, you won't be able to move. When starting in second gear, your tires won't spin as easy, making it easier to go. You do have to feather the clutch pretty much the whole time until you get rolling, but better to do that than be stuck trying to start in first.
>>
>>14134661
Also, if you aren't wearing winter tires avoid hills at all costs, both fwd and rwd. You won't be able to get up the hill unless you've got a lot of sand.

Otherwise, hill start in second should be fine as long as you're feathering the clutch.
>>
>>14134670
>>14134681
I do have winter tires. What does feathering the clutch mean? Letting out really precisely and slowly? Don't think I can do that, my clutch is terrible.
>>
>>14128567
It's in Nova Scotia
>>
>>14134691
Feathering the clutch is not letting it out all the way. The same sort of movement when releasing the clutch from a dry start, but much longer on the clutch. Letting out the clutch too fast will spin your tires.

Basically what I do to get rolling when things are really terrible, second gear, and go just barely above the catch point so that I start rolling very slowly. From there, I stay solid on the gas so I'm sticking at 1500RPM, and very slowly release the clutch as I pick up speed. If my wheels start spinning, I push the clutch in a little until they grip again.

Don't try and focus on what your feet are doing, or what your engine is doing. Focus on what your wheels can do. Focus on giving the wheels very little power until you are rolling. It's really ideal for you to practice in a safe space first before going on major roads if you're really uneasy about the whole thing. Just think of it like learning manual again.

Just keep in mind I'm driving a shitbox e36 with shallow tread all-seasons, so with snow tires your life will be a lot easier. You'll be fine.

My mother has a '13 CrossTrek with the 1.6 petrol and CVT

For her the CVT is perfect; she drives at exactly the speed limit, never really overtakes, don't drive aggresively and haven't really tried conventional automatic

I however find it to be a piece of shit gearbox... its response is insanely slow, the acceleration seems unreasonably low, engine braking sucks ass and never really works the way you'd want it to, aswell as the fact that it is loud as fuck if you put the foot down

I don't like it at all for an application such as a car. It works fine for a snowmobile and a scooter, but not for a car like this if you ever want to drive a bit more aggresive than your grandmother
>>
>>14136376
>engine braking sucks ass and never really works the way you'd want it to

Maybe you're just bad at it.
>>
>>14136396
There is, literally, no way to get proper strong braking with it. And attempting to "lock" it to a certain speed when going downhill without using the conventional brakes usually leaves you with a speed discrepancy of anything between 10-15mph more or less what you're actually trying to keep
>>
>>14136396
He's bad at letting off the gas? A lot of newer cars don't engine brake very much so they coast more for better fuel economy.

Engine braking is more economical than coasting...

Fuck, even the Yamahas I use at work have better engine braking than the Subaru, although we are talking about two quite different CVT setups
>>
>>14136446
I want to ride that.
>>
>>14136446
>Engine braking is more economical than coasting..
Only on steep down hills is it more economical to engine brake. Flat land or slight grade it's more economical to coast. I've beat the EPA estimates by 14/4/11 City/Highway/Mixed for my car and over the last two years and 47k miles beat the EPA average by 4.7 and 6.8mpg.

Unloaded pickups have shit weight distribution. All your power goes to 2 wheels with no weight on them.

Their fine if you have 4x4, but 2wd trucks fucking suck unless you load them down.
>>
>>14136667
Engine braking, aka using the engine to brake in a situation where you'd "normally" use the conventional brakes like when keeping a certain speed going down a hill, slowly slowing down for turning off a road or similar

If you put the clutch in and coast towards a stop using the brakes your engine is idling and using a tiny amount of fuel. Using your engine braking you will, with a modern fuel-injected car, not use any fuel

I understand what engine braking is and when it should be used. Apparently you don't quite have a grasp on this yet.

Again like I said, on a large downhill decent it is better to engine brake, but if you're on flat land or just a slightly downhill grade it's better to coast. I've tested this theory over thousands and thousands of miles and the last 6 years I've had my most recent car.

What you're failing to see is I'm saying that in certain situations the engine braking reduces your speed too much and that's why it's more efficient to just coast at those times.

There's your answer
>>
>>14140701
It reduces your speed too much if you're using it to such an extent that you're way below the ideal speed when you're starting to accelerate again. Braking and acceleration will indeed always use more fuel than maintaining a as-consistent-as-possible speed

The scenarious I'm using is going down a speed and using it to control your speed, save your brakes from a fuckton of wear and also save fuel

If you're doing something like getting off a main highway you can easily time it properly with engine braking so that you reach the "ideal" speed for getting off the ramp or reaccelerating as you've gotten onto the other road

The key point you're mentioning is "certain situations". As a driver you have to know which one to pick when

Hehe, I'm not trying to lecture you about it, based on what you've written you seem pretty well versed in how to use it

What do you drive by the way? Guy I know bought himself a E46 with the 2.5 litre, and he was super pissed because his fuel economy was absolutely shit (first car)

Rode with him a few weeks later... he'd nearly have the ABS engage every time he came to a stop, redline it whenever and would stay in fourth for maybe a good minute after getting onto the highway before shifting up, and on the notice of engine braking; he had no idea of the concept and would ride his brakes for minutes on end when going down the mountain roads here

To this day he still drives the exact way, and also tried having the previous owner pay for new pads when they were completely worn out two months after purchase

Just my Focus. We've talked about how long the brakes lasted me once before. Light car, manual, drive like a hypermiler if people aren't around. So my brakes lived an easy life for the most part. I only ever had to do a couple of really hard stops from shitters or animals crossing my path.

Also, my brothers wife is hard on their brakes too. I've had to do multiple brakes jobs for them because they share cars. I made a comment to my brother about how long my brakes had lasted and he said "don't let Lori drive your car, they'll be gone by the time she hits the highway". I kek'd pretty hard.

Most of us here seem to have a positive outlook on our snow. You don't have much to laugh at. On top of that, California only has water because other places are kind enough to import their water

Get a truck, Gaylord.

No, I'm good not being Dr.Stranger: Cuck Supreme like you.

That's some serious projection, bro. I didn't mean a fucking brodozer, just something like a small SUV, or pickup with four wheel drive for snowy times. You can still drive your teen girl car any other time.
>>
>>14142604
It's not as much projecting as what you do on Jamal as he spends time with your wife.

Finally got some snow, been on suicide watch since April.
Did a few hundred miles in the snow last 2 days and it was great, handbrake turns in Transit everywhere.
Electronics on plow got fucked on 2nd damn pass, luckily I was able to get it off the ground and drive it to the shop, should be fixed tomorrow.

I'm gay, I am the wife. Nice projection though. Just tell your ex how much it hurt you when she cheated, you'll feel better after.

Hows that gay hookup culture working for you? Have you taken enough dicks to resolve all of your issues? I'm going to say no so far.
