how does /o feel about the r129 sl300 and sl500 as a first car. they are about 4-5000 where i am and i can afford another 4000 in repairs.

Lots of German cars like that (N/A BMW and Merc 6cyl engines especially), the engines will run 300k miles. But 250k of those miles, the CEL will be on and there will be a bunch of BS codes.

Surprisingly nice and easy to work on, but it can be costly
Parts unique to the car, especially the 500, can be had new just fine from any dealership, but they are expensive. Also, used parts are not that common to find unless you live in Germany
TLDR; its a good car, but I wouldn't depend on it as my only car with that budget and the fact that you might have to wait a bit on parts

Depends on how you gonna use it. Despite its "sporty" looks, it really is a fat GT with a million gadgets (that break down) for old people with a combover. Don't get me wrong, I love the old barge and I'd own one right now if I could, but don't expect anything else than a heavy merc.
If you really want it, go for the 300 24v as they were the more modern, sturdier engines of the lot. It has less power than the V8 but it's not like you gonna race it, and it also gets reasonably decent mpg. Also keep in mind that if anything even slightly major goes wrong, it will cost more than the whole car. Hell, a new roof mechanism costs ~4000 eurodollars.

The truck is his DD and work-vehicle, used to transport his gyrocopters, microplanes, machinery that he services (he has his own business doing basically anything mechanically related, aswell as, to the best of my knowledge, being the only guy in Norway who is licensed to approve gyrocopters) aswell as transport cars, bikes and anything else
An example; he regularly transports these things, and if you want to know how much they weigh; look at how little contact the front tires have to the ground
