braces are incredibly common in the US if you're middle class or above. there's definitely more of a culture of non-medical dentistry here which is why wisdom teeth removal is so common.
I think it's easy to convince americans they need to pay thousands for unnecessary dentistry is because it's common place to pay thousands for (necessary) medical procedures.
