What are causes for steering wheel shake? It happens on and off, from almost smooth to very shaky. Could I have just lost a wheel weight?
Can a wheel be balanced accurately enough at home or do I need to take it to a shop?

Had an sx4 with shoddy wheels, steering shakes. Put some 17" impala wheels and now I can go 100+ without shaking.
How much should it cost to get my wheels balanced? I want to know a normal price before I agree to something stupid.
They should have been balanced when I had my tires installed last year but I guess not or I lost one of the weights.

Bad alignment can cause wheel shake also. Check your tires for bulges first, not just on the sidewall but in the tread also. I had a boilt go through my tire and I patched it. Now my wheel shakes above 50mph. Im sure its bulged. Im to lazy to look. Going to get new tires soon anyways and I rarely drive over 45mph these days.

Take them back to the place where you got them. If they are reputable they might do it for free if the tire is under warranty.

Shops are weird about this. Ive been quoted from $20 to $90 for tire balancing.

Tire Discounters website says free lifetime wheel balancing. I'll take it back to them in a couple days to see if they will do that for me.

Could very well be an out of balance wheel, but saying that it happens on and off makes me think you have an incorrect toe setting. Run your finger back and forth across the tread on the front tires. If it feels smooth one way, and rough the other, take it in for an alignment. If it feels the same in both directions, get the wheels balanced.

Will do next time I go outside, but it's rainy right now. It drives straight though so I figured toe was good.
Warped discs, damaged sway bar rubbers, wheels out of alignment etc, best to get it checked by a professional if you have no idea what you are doing.

could also a multitude of suspension shit. Tie rods, steering rack, ball joints, loose shock tower. oh and bearings i believe can cause a shake
