I think I know hwy you guys are seeing a disparity. In Japan you gotta buy off dealers who have a huge markup. However, if you're importing you work with import brokers who have access to the auction houses that dealers buy off, so you get a way lower price.
I was looking to import some time ago, and yeah, from what I say, average BNR34 was about 3.5m. BNR32 were about 1.2, and a good GC8 STi was maybe 800k.

This may be anecdotal "evidence", but everyone I've ever known with an RB20 has either blown it up somehow or runs like absolute shit. SR's are good for 350bhp at least without touching bottom end. Not to mention, better engine as a daily because it actually has respectable fuel economy.

You can browse auction listings here. Basically the way it works in Japan is that there's a bunch of auction houses all over the country that dealers sell stuff they get traded in to. These auction houses then auction the cars off to dealers, so that they can sell. This site lets you browse all of the auction listings. Cars are graded by condition, and make sure the car has been sold if trying to figure how much the cars go for.
