My car is an automatic. Usually I drive in overdrive and cruise at 65 MPH comfortably at 2.5k RPM, but one day my car jerked and revved to 7k RPM and now it cruises at 5k RPM at the same speed and feels like it is "skipping" a gear.

Do you think it's my solenoids? I drained the transmission fluid and it was really dark and mucky, but it didn't fix the issue.

Is this issue less likely to happen with a manual transmission vehicle?
>>
>>14121609
Do you see "O/D" off on the dashboard?
>>
>>14121609
Is a manual transmission less likely to automatically select a higher gear than what you selected because of a possibly bad solenoid? Yes, yes it is you fucking retard.
>>
>>14121614
No

>>14121618
I just started learning about cars. I apologize for the ignorance. I have never driven a manual. I just want to figure out my issue so I can get it fixed.
>>
>>14121609
if it's a solenoid chances are you're going to get a check engine light.
>>
>>14121634
What else could my issue be?
>>
>>14121624
You understand that having a stick and a clutch pedal means you're the one selecting a gears in a manual right?

And therefore, your aforementioned problem is never going to happen to a manual?
>>
>>14121637
Any other symptoms?
>>
>>14121637
Its a shit transmission from the get go, or you're imagining things.
>>
>>14121618
why do you feel the need to go around calling people fucking retards just because they don't know stuff? we all gotta start somewhere ya fuckin cunt

people like you are the reason normies are scared to learn about cars. angry autists acting like a troll under a bridge not letting them cross.
>>
For many cars, "overdrive" or "sports" mode does not use the highest gear, by design.

Do you have this problem in normal mode?
>>
>>14121609
Sounds like overdrive is disabled somehow, Iv only ever driven manuals so I don't know wtf is going on. But if it's revving higher then it's obviously not in the right gear for whatever reason.
>>
>>14121647
Normies could easily google shit and find out for themselves instead OP is asking on a Russian Picture Moving Board of Comedy.

If I try to go faster than 65, it immediately goes to redline and sounds like a rocket ship taking off.

>>14121645
Yeah I'm reading on the ZX2 forums that the automatic versions of these cars have crappy transmissions that tend to overheat, but this one used to be far less crappy. I'm afraid to drive my car now.

>>14121647
I don't care man. It's 4chan. I'm expecting it.
>>
>>14121655
Yeah I get the same problem in regular drive mode

>>14121660
It could be. About a year ago my gearbox messed up and my car got stuck in park. I had to muscle it back into drive, and when I did my key got stuck in the ignition. Almost as if the car wasn't detecting that it was in park anymore after that.

I took it to a mechanic and he got it fixed and got my key out, but I'm definitely having more issues. Not sure if those problems could be related.
>>
>>14121674
Sounds like your transmission just gave up on life, m8. It doesn't matter if it's a solenoid or the entire transmission is broken, repairing a solenoid often costs more than just simply buying a new one cuz those niggers are a bitch to get to.
>>
>>14121647
Because the very idea of asking if a manual transmission is going to select a higher gear for you is so fucking retarded it needs to be chastised. And fuck you, our job isn't to spoon feed people shit that can easily be found on the LARGEST collection of information in human history that is instantly accessible by anyone browsing this board.
>>
>>14121678
How much am I looking to spend on this replacement?

I also need a new axle assembly because I can hear the CV joints clacking when I make sharp turns.
>>
>>14121688
Nobody cares about your insecurities desu. Go satiate your ego somewhere else senpai.

I get that insulting people who don't know shit makes you feel better about yourself but honestly it has nothing to do with the topic at hand, so if you can't help you can just fuck right off.
>>
>>14121692
Not sure on that car but I paid 900 for mine and it was used with 70k miles on it. My car was 2000 Hyundai Elantra
>>
>>14121697
>muh insecurities
>let me project on you
Look, I'm sorry someone made fun of you at someone point, but OPs question was fucking stupid. Why don't you go find a new place where you can hold hands with everyone and jerk each other off with niceness. Not our jobs to spoon feed stupid shit you can answer yourself. Not our jobs to satiate your fragile ego that gets rump roasted at the slightest insult on an anonymous message board.
>>
>>14121713
it'd be different if you actually knew what the fuck you were talking about, but you clearly don't fucking retard
>>
>>14121666
When you start your car what does it rev to?
>>
>>14121719
Pls no bully this is place to be friends be a pissy baby faggot
>>
>>14121699
Damn that sucks.

>>14121726
1200-1300. It's idling normally.
>>
>>14121609
you just need new clutch plates, don't go cheap and change them all when you have the tranny off.
>>
>>14121731
Can you feel it shift at all? Or does it stay in one gear the whole time?
>>
>>14121737
It shifts, it just takes a lot more RPMs for my auto tranny to put it into another gear. It used to switch from 1st to 2nd at around 3k, but now it goes all the way up to almost 6.5k before it'll shift into the next gear. I can hear the strain on the engine and it makes me really nervous.
>>
>>14121745
Try changing your TPS. I would change all these little sensors before you pay a bunch of money.

OP do yourself a favor and install a ratchet shifter

it lets you have control over your transmission without going through the trouble of installing a clutch
>>
>>14121750
Alright, I'll give it a shot. Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it guys.

>>14121754
I've never heard of those things, but I just googled it and apparently they use them for drag racing? Do you just shift like you would a manual only without a clutch?

Theoretically if I had one I could just put the car into the correct gear myself?
>>
op, it sounds like your shit is fucked. as in new tranny time. this is exactly why i don't like auto trans.
>>
>>14121609
Do you have your shifter in 2 instead of D?

Are you sitting at the same speed for more than a couple seconds?
>>
>>14121750
Test them, don't just change. TPS could be an issue.
>>
>>14121766
I was afraid of this.

Maybe I can save up and get a 5 speed manny-tranny shitbox Honda Civic.

>>14121769
I have it in overdrive, but I've also tried it in regular drive and it still does the same thing. Almost double the revs at the same speeds, and nearly redlining before shifting into the next gear.
>>
>>14121784
Or you can figure out wtf is wrong with you car. Find a factory service manual for it.
>>
>>14121866
Yeah, I'm sure someone with no experience or tools is just going to crack open their automatic transmission and fix it themselves. You fucking reatrd.
>>
>>14121903
That's what manuals are for, idiot. Buy tools, they're not expensive and if you own machines you should have them.
>>
>>14121906
You don't actually believe this, do you?

>just buy a manual and work on your own transmission lel
>it's ez
>>
>>14121866
I could try getting the hayne's service manual. I've heard good things about it. I'll have to get a tool set though. Are craftsman socket wrenches any good? I bet I could get a set on clearance.

>>14121903
I'm not opposed to giving it a shot. I'll just need to buy tools first.
>>
>>14121925
Yeah dude, just open this shit up and give it a go. Crawl up under your car and yank that motherfucker out like, it's ez.
>>
>>14121911
>You don't actually believe this, do you?
Yes. Why do you think they make manuals? If you're not a total fucking moron who can't work a computer, you can work on a car with a factory service manual. If you need any special tools it will even outline exactly what you need.
>>14121925
>I could try getting the hayne's service manual.
No, those are worthless. If you can't find an FSM on the internet for you car, you can buy one. But really it depends on what the car is worth to you.
>>
>>14121949
Probably because they don't have a total fucking moron who can't work on a computer open up and fix your transmission. They have specialized techs with 4 years + certifications beyond your shade tree mechanic bullshit do that. I wouldn't trust you to touch shit on any vehicle because you seem especially ignorant.
>>
>>14121962
>you seem especially ignorant.
Likewise.
>>
I'd just feel depressed that I can't do it on my own for the lack of appropriate tools.
That frustration will just leave me to take it to some techs
>>
>>14121678

There are like 40 solenoids you dumb shit, that means nothing

>>14121998
A transmission can weigh anywhere from 200 to 400lb. How did you plan on moving it?
>>
>>14122026
>A transmission can weigh anywhere from 200 to 400lb
I can guarantee you his transmission is not that heavy.
>>
>>14121972
Nevermind, you're right m8, this looks hella easy actually. An amateur with zero knowledge or backgroudn can do this shit totally.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQgQIyIhI0o
>>
>>14122062
>An amateur with zero knowledge
What do you think the factory service manual is for?
>>
Even working at a high volume dealership we didn't open up autos, we would send them out or replace them with a new one, just not worth the time for techs to train to learn them and spend the time fixing them, better to leave it to a specialist. When we rebuilt them in school out of 40 or 50 rebuilt transmissions maybe 10 worked the first time around. They are pretty tough to look at and understand what is going on, really easy to miss one small thing.
>>
>>14122083
nah bro, you're all just stupid and didn't read the manual. You're all shit at your jobs, hire this guy >>14122073.

Fucking shitters ruining my hobby, any novice can do this. Just read a fucking book. Look that shit up on google, ffs.
>>
Clutch plates gets my vote. Dont listen to the kid thats pissed his wyotech degree isnt gonna help him make a dime past 30k a year his whole life, take that to a pro shop. An established one with bearded old dudes is your best bet.

The above anon is actually right, just about every dealership these days send out autos for rebuild or just core them. Dealerships never rebuild transmissions these days, its too much time for too little money.
>>
Can you guys explain to me what O/D does and if theres any long term effects to driving with it On vs Off?

Just realized ive been driving my shitbox with the O/D off for a week
>>
>>14122867
It's just a higher gear ratio
>>
>>14122867
Over drive typically means a gear that is >1.0:1.0 like a 0.79:1 gear allowing great economy at the cost of acceleration and torque.

or like >>14122951
said, it's just a higher final gear, a gear that is over your drive gear which is typically a 1:1 gear.
>>
>>14122851
Yea, it's not difficult. Just tedious. Any idiot can do it, there's just no money in it.
>>
>>14122867
Over drive is a gear ratio where the input spins slower than the output. 1:.7 would be an overdriven ratio. That switch disables any gear in your transmission that is over 1:1 from being engaged. There's no real long term effects of what you did, just worsened fuel economy and the extra noise.
>>
>>14122026

I removed and reinstalled my ranger's transmission on my own and I'm not some roid'd /fit/izen
>>
You've lost a year op. same shit happened to me op.
Trans gear lost some teeth, i found them in the pan. Replaced fluid and torque converter to no avail.
Replaced trans and it was fine.
>>
>>14122843
>>Forgetting to hammer the pan flat again

just did my 4l60e and i never hammered anything...
>>
>>14123086
> i found them in the pan

>replaced torque converter

????
>>
>>14122867
most of the answers, actually all are technically correct. but theres a smipler way to understand it.

you have a 4spd auto.. OD is your 4th gear.

if you have a newer auto maybe you have 5,6 or 7 spd auto.

Overdrive would then be whichever of your highr gears have over 1:1 ratio..
So, 1 engine rotation = More than 1 rotation of the gearbox. so your engine turns less and the gearbox turns more.
>>
>>14123118
That's a very convoluted way of thinking.
>>
>>14121666
Your transmission is fucked. The clutch pack is shot, that shooting straight to 7k is the transmission slipping.
>>
>>14123123
is it?

i thought that it was simpler.. the first part at least. once you start talking gear ratios then yeah it is harder.

but basically, all of /o/ is poor and drive shitboxes, shitboxes mainly have 4spd autos, maybe some people have 3 speed, but correct me if im wrong - ive owned a few 3 speeds and ive never seen one with OD.
>>
>>14121688
>isn't our job
Shut the fuck up. Nowhere do you have an obligation to make any comment, so why post some stupid shit when the guy has a question about a car on a goddamn forum with a specific focus on automobiles? Just answer the guy or fuck of to /b/ or some shit
>>
>>14123103
Seems like he implied he replaced those two things first then pulled the pan off.

i get that with sport mode, but overdrive is literally the opposite
>>
Blown torque converter it happens
>>
>>14121609
first
determine if the trans is doing this on its own == replace trans parts
or
if the cars computer / shift linkage / kickdown cable is telling the trans to do such things == fis those things
>>
>>14121754
not OP but would this work?

could he just pop one of these mother fuckers in and start shifting gears himself and totally bypass this issue?
>>
>>14121754
dont you need a manual valve body transmission aswell
>>
I dont know what transmission you have but on turbo hydramatics they have a vacuum modulator on the back that tells it when shift.

when the line gets clogged it causes it to hang onto gears for aslong as it possibly can and sometimes makes the gears randomly kickdown

i dont know anything about modern autos so they might not even use vacuum anymore
