looking to rent a place with a garage to work on my car in the winter/at night/in the rain without issue

for those fagg/o/ts renting with a garage, how did you find your place? did you have to take a townhouse with roomates?
>>
>>14118762

>did you have to take a townhouse with roomates?

Yes, but no roomates.
>>
>>14118780
>solo rent a townhouse
sounds expensive as fuck
>>
>>14118785

It is but it's better than dealing with roomates.
>>
sort of did that by accident during school to put in a new headgasket one time
>>
>>14118813
You would be better off just buying a house
>>
>>14118825

I know, but I plan on moving in a few years.

Bump. I'm also interested. Not too long ago I was very interested in pic related, near my uni. However, owner didn't seem too keen on the prospect of me rebar-ing the windows and reinforcing the doors upon finding evidence of break-ins. Any work I've done has been simple and out in my apartment's parking lot. Everything else has been paying for shit I could do myself if I had the proper place.
I reckon anything should be alright so long as you can get power and it's a safe enclosure. Heat for winter can be solved with many widely available space heaters.
>>
I currently live in a dual master bedroom apartment with a roommate and garages are available but they cost extra. My next place will either be a house with a garage and roommates or, if I can't find roommates, a studio with covered parking like I have now.
>>
I just bought a house and my 1 non-negotiable was a garage. I lucked out and got a 2-car, detached.

My life bow now complete
>>
I live in a town house/ condominium. It's two story, has a tiny back yard, that has a bck gate that goes to the driveway, with a 1 car garage. I make knives as a hobby, and have my guitars/ music stuff in there.

It's me, my GF, her brother, and his wife. $1200/ mo. $300 each.

Space heaters, jackets, and not being a bitch helps stay warm.

2 car detached.

That was my first requirement.
>>
>>14119720

That's fantastic, godspeed

I'm in a fairly cramped suburb in the northeast getting a 2 car was hard as shit.
>>
>>14118762
my problem with this garage was always that is looks a little tight around the car itself, I'd like a little more room to maneuver/put things I've taken off

Bought the house. 7 acres. No close neighbors glad to have finally made it to this point. I've rented storage places before and wrenched on my car there when I had an apt. But most frown on it.

This is my kitchen window.
>>
>>14119704
i just bought a house too. my only requirement was a 2 car garage.

i ended up with a single car garage with a dirt floor...

it was a really good deal otherwise i swear...

currently digging up the floor to pour a slab in and fixing some of the foundation.

plans to put a wood burning stove in it too.
>>
>>14118835
something like that with a bedroom, wash facilty and kitchen upstairs would be all i need for life

Mine has a toyotomi monitor and an oil drip stove. I filter used oil and trans fluid, mix them with diesel and heat my workspace with it. I use the monitor to maintain a base temp and use the drip stove to get it comfortable when I'm wrenching. My house also has an old attached stable I'm thinking of making into a 1 car. My friend used sand, pressure treated lumber and marine plywood for his and it turned out fine.
>>
>>14119735
There's at least 4 feet to the left of the car. Judging by the design on the right side, probably 6-8. The garage doesn't end immediately at the garage door

10meg dsl is all I can get but it streams and games fine for me.

168k and the ford by the garage with a camper came with it. I got cold feet because it is on a steep hill and when we get freezing rain it's treacherous. Got the truck all new weatherproof and the window casements resealed and I pulled the trigger. The house was built in 1985 so it needs some modernization and it is wall to wall carpeted. Who carpets their kitchen brah? Them 16 ft ceilings tho. Yes the marlin came with too.

>wood burning stove in garage
oh fuck that sounds comfy as hell
make some coffee fresh with a moka pot while it's warming the place up. isn't there something you can attach to it to increase hot air flow? like a fan around it or something? so it heats up the garage very efficiently
>>
>>14119795
search craigslist in the office spaces section, a lot of small buisness offices have a garage as the main section and an enclosed furnished section where the actual office is. generally they have some kind of climate control and insulation and some plumbing for a small half bath, just need to set up a shower and get an electric stovetop + oven wired up and you're good to fuckin go bro

they are, i made a little one for mine, it takes about an hour to heat a 24x50 garage to a comfortable temperature but it was free to make
>>
>>14119944
Damn son, houses in the boons are cheap. Something like that would be perfect for me if I weren't on call at a hospital

I wonder if it's possible to pay to get a fibre line up there?
>>
>>14120027
They have double wall stoves with forced air fans and you can also get a thing called a "stack robber" that scavenged unused heat from the chimney pipe.
>>
>>14120053
Not yet they will have fiber and 1 gig in late 2017 according to a friend who is in communications.
>>
>>14120058
ah i see, excellent.

>>14120052
oh i thought it would be an actual stove, but you've built more of a space heater. that's ok, free is free
>>
>>14120069
you could tack weld a little tray to the top of the barrel and it would work pretty good

why detached instead of attached?
>>
>>14120281

This needs to be answered.

Detached garages are more expensive to heat.
>>
>>14120287
And simply more of a hassle since you have to walk back and forth.

I mean, I'd be happy with a deattached garage as well, but I'd choose attached if given the choice.
>>
>>14120123
>>14120130
Where do you live? Alaska?
>>
>>14120281
I didn't want the noise and vibration transmitted through the house when I'm running a compressor and impact, die grinder or air chisel. I can work all night without bothering anyone and if I blow something up or burn the place down the house is fine.I also like to blast my stereo when I'm working alone. You can hardly notice if the house is silent.
Attached are for parking detach are for workshops.
>>
>>14120303
Yes

Never having to wrench outside again
>>
>>14120324
mm, fair enough. personally, my ideal house would be a giant garage with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom in a corner. a live-in workshop, if you will. though, i do live alone.
>>
>>14120425
