Because in America, we don't drive our cars. We live in them 2+ hours a day. We use cars like yuropeans use mass transit: as an appliance.
Cupholders, audio systems, comfy seats, high quality climate control etc. ends up being more important than anything else.

Our gas is lower octane than most other countries, because we adopted unleaded gas before most everyone else. That's also the main reason our malaise era engines were running 8:1 compression while european imports were 10:1 or higher. The US's regular unleaded has been locked in at 87 AKI (~90 RON) since 1972 - but europe didn't adopt universal catalytic converters or go lead-free until the early 90's, by which time unleaded gas was much better than it had been in the 70's.
Maybe a eurofag can chime in and tell me what your regular unleaded octane rating is - wikipedia says it's usually 95 RON / 91 AKI but I don't trust it.
That has absolutely nothing to do with NOS, though.
The Prius can actually be quick, has a ton of starting torque, and should be used appropriately and often. Seriously the car can, surprisingly, have traction issues with good tires. I shouldn't see other Priuses crawling like snails holding up a line of 20 people. Plus that hatch is big enough to haul engines, transmissions, and other parts for my other fun cars. Good car targeted at bad audience.

I live in a pretty basic upper middle class suburb and I'd have to say the most common cars here are large pickups, small to mid size luxo cars like the 3 series or E-Class, V8 SUVs, a few Jap crossovers and sedans, and a bunch of muscle cars. It's pretty varied here. I'd say that only a 1/5th of vehicles here muscle cars, but that's still a pretty big percentage. Lot's of old fat boomers and Mexicans have classic cars here too.
