Hi lads, happy holidays!
Need your help /o/ I found a 1989 Jeep Cherokee (pic related) on sale for about $1900 I haven't had a chance to look at it cause of the festivities and such. Owner says it's in great condition so I ask you what should I know about this vehicle? What should I check??
It would be my first jeep btw, thanks a bunch!!
Off-road thread I guess, let me see your vehicles lads.
>>
Cherokee with AMC 4.0 is GOAT.
Congrats on the find.
>>

and of course check 4x4

I know little to nothing about cars, about this xj I know it has 4wd, it's a 4.0 automatic.
>>14107778
Cheers lads. Maybe I'll post some pics of my adventures after I buy it.
>>
They tend to rot along the rocker panels so check for rust and rot.
Other anon is right about the valve cover and gasket. That 4.0 is fucking solid.

Don't get your hopes up. visit >>10361919 to learn how to inspect used shitboxes, and inspect the cherokee accordingly.
>>
If you check nothing else I would check for rust along the under carriage.

Mostly just check for rust. Check everywhere. If you can, check the fluid in the diffs and trans case.

On a related note, I just picked up my first this week. 2000 Cherokee sport.
>>
renix injected pos. Avoid. These were the final days of AMC/Renault for a reason. And they owned Jeep then.

Don't buy it if you want to go off road is my only advice.
>>
>>14110742
And why is that?
>inb4 another retard thinks that "offroad" has to include climbing massive boulders or driving through 4 foot rivers
>>
>>14110748
>And why is that?
Low ground clearance, open differentials, weak axles, can't fit tires bigger than like 28" stock, and the ever present weak XJ frame.
>>
>>14110750
And yet it works just fine for what 90% of people would encounter offroad. If they were even half as shit as you think they are, then why would they have such a massive following and get used constantly for all but severe trails? And almost everything you mentioned can be fixed for less than $5000 save the body on frame.
>>
>>14110750
>stock

Are you even trying? Who the fuck buys a Jeep to go off road, then leaves it stock. And it takes like 20 years of nothing but offroading to weaken the frames, and they make braces to fix that.
>>

>And yet it works just fine for what 90% of people would encounter offroad.
Sure, if you only go down fire roads. If you want to do anything more challenging, don't bother buying an XJ. Especially at the prices they are fetching these days for a decent example.
>If they were even half as shit as you think they are
They are 100% what I think they are.
>then why would they have such a massive following and get used constantly for all but severe trails?
People like cheap trash and then putting more cheap trash on it?
>>14110757
>Who the fuck buys a Jeep to go off road, then leaves it stock.
No one who buys an XJ.
>And it takes like 20 years of nothing but offroading to weaken the frames, and they make braces to fix that.
No, the frame is already weak from the factory. It doesn't take that kind of abuse to crack the frames which is the real problem. You shouldn't need to brace your car's frame to keep it from destroying itself.

The XJ isn't an off roader, it was never meant to me.

The 4.0 isn't really that good. It's kind of like a 305. A turd that will run like a turd for quite a while.
>>
>>14110694
They were the final days of AMC because they were doing better than ever and got bought out by Chrysler for their profitability.
>>
>>14111288
well it does weigh more than a 305
i would say it doesnt really do much a v8 cant
>>
>>14110694
Renix aint bad senpai
>>
>>14107755
Top gear paid just £250
>>
>>14110694
Amx was bought becuase of how profitable they (and especially jeep) were.
Jeep was absorbed, and amc mostly ohased out as a way of securing less competition.
Iococca knew what he was doing, but that dosent mean i like it.
>>
>>14112449
Amc* shit.
Not amx
>>
>>14111661
under ratted
>>
All this frame talk.
>xj is unit body.
>>
>>14113020
Is this bait? I want to believe it is, but I know there are people this stupid here.
>>
>>14113053
No, there are really people who believe unibody vehicles don't have frames.
