Corolla? Civic?

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either.
>>
Camry or corolla, yep.

Both cars you should be able to run the hell out of. But there is still that Civic tax where they are a little overpriced. But for $3k, you should still be able to buy a decent Civic.

All I'm saying is you could probably get a nicer Cobalt or Cavalier for the money, which are fairly reliable shitboxes. But I haven's seen them run to 200k miles with no maintenance like the average Corolla.
>>
What's so great about those cars btw? Just made sell?

*well

I have driven so many Corollas and Civics (mostly early-mid 2000s) with over 200k miles, barely any maintenance ever done to them, nothing replaced, and I would feel comfortable driving them across the country.

Come on now lets not overrate things.

The 1ZZ engine in the Corolla of early 00s had many problems and needed care just as much as any other car.

Volvo S60 gen 1

Built like a tank, that engine will never die

I drove a 14 year old one that had 7 owners and it was smooth as fuck still. Even the clutch was okay. And you can get way better conditioned cars than I had.

They're very mechanically simple, so there's fewer points of failure to begin with, and they can afford to make what little parts there are more durable.

Anything that will break will also be very easy and cheap to replace.

I'm going to be contrarian and say no, don't get a Toyota or Honda. They hold their value too well (because they're good), which means $3k won't get you much.

You want something that's still pretty reliable, but not as popular (which does mean less reliable). A Nissan, Mazda (if you're in a non-rusty area) could work. Or Buick - they're historically the most reliable domestics by far, and parts are cheap. Yes, they suck. So what.
