I teat drove 2014 to maybe replace my 2000 5 speed corolla.
Thing was junk.
Interior quality was worse than my 2000.
Manual trans was notchy and not smooth.

I'd size up to a Camry or Accord. When I think "general purpose" I think "haul 3 buddies around" and try getting 4 Burgers to cram into a compact without complaint.

Yes, although it is hard to ignore Camry resale/residual value compared to the Corolla if you're making an economic decision. You can lease a Camry SE for like $10 more than a Corolla S Plus at most dealerships. I love me some Corolla S Plus 6MT though.
