I had a 2004 CLK55 AMG. Thing was an absolute money pit (no surprise). So glad I got rid of it.

Had a 2011 C63 AMG. Insanely unreliable car. Pretty sad considering it costed me $80k Canadabux and the 2015 Mustang GT feels better to drive for $35k.

Never driven an S class before, but I've driven a 2012 C63 AMG. It was alright I guess, but nothing special. Way better cars in that price range.
My dad has owned a bunch of them. CLK63 Black, SL55, 63, 65 Black, SLS, SLS convertable, SLS Black, S63, S63 Coupe, GT-S...totalling up to probably 20 different ones. I had a C63 Black for a few months.
They are all around pretty good cars, but they are heavy (although that has gotten better the last 5-7 years). Some are better than others handling wise.
Originally what was great was you could get an AMG and it would be like a tuner car that still had warranty. They were a lot more rough around the edges. The best was probably the CLK63 Black series, which looks like a DTM car and just drives really nice.
S AMGs are great cars, but me personally, I'd just get a 550. It's still a big sedan and so the power goes unused. The 550 (not an AMG) is so much cheaper and the real pleasure of the S class is the interior, and the 550 still has a great motor. The S65 is a waste of money, but sounds really cool.
More recently AMG has really be whored out though, like now I just saw a 'GLE 450 AMG' driving down the street, which is a regular motor car with the 'AMG package' .. they are going to kill the brand doing that but they kind of already have. There is just too much AMG now for them to be special.
The SLS is a cool car, but couldn't get the power down..The GT-S is much better overall.
Reliability wise they are okay. Over my dads five or six S classes they always seem to have some weird problem though, like this current one has a rattle at certain speeds which is unacceptable in such an expensive car. It's just a pain to bring it in for that.
I'm rambling but whatever... carry on.. If you have any specific AMG questions I might be able to answer because I've been in a bunch of them and have lots of seat time, including some track time.

Love my DD E63 AMG. Last of the N/A large displacement V8's... I firmly believe AMG's are a great buy second hand. I got mine 4 years ago for about 1/3 of its original 100k+ sticker price.
Yes parts can be pricey, but if you arent afraid to turn wrenches on them yourself, they are great vehicles to own, in 4 years and 40k miles the only issue I had with mine was a blown out air shock, cost about $800 to replace

Never had that happen, but whenever the 430 would sit for a while it would run like shit when it first started again. Even backfire. And I'm not talking a long time, I'm talking a few weeks. My boss and his friends had multiple and they all did it. 458 is better in that respect, but have to run a battery tender on those still (even if just not using during the week). Ferraris do not sit well, which is kind of strange since they generally don't get many miles on them.
