I'd much rather work hard on a sub $5k car to make it nice than work at some soul-sucking job to be able to afford something that will inevitably turn into a shitheap for $20k

This. I got a 540i for 4k and as much as i loved it it pained me greatly to see it fall from grace on my minimum wage budget. For 8-9k there is no better car on this planet than a 6speed e39 540i

It was on cl for 1200 and my boy knew the guy and he had offered my friend the car for half. I told him if he could get me that deal ill buy it on the spot. Needs a clutch which i already have and am putting in soon. In it for 900 so far. Its gonna be a rally car.

>>14097172
Nice meme, but no. Dadvice m8. E39s are reliable as fuck and hardly need anything. Maybe if the car is completely neglected and you go to the dealership and let them charge you $500 to put in a fuel filter you might rack up a $4k bill but if you're doing maintenance yourself and the car isn't beat to shit I'd budget $300 for potential maintenance in the first year.

>>
>>14097310
You will need to replace the cooling system and the electric windows and trunk release will go out.
>>
>>14097323
You got lucky or live innawoods
>>
>>14097324
And probably the fuel pump.
The good thing is, most E39s will either have had a cooling system overhaul or not be running at all at this point, and all these other things are easy 1-2 hour jobs that can be done with a screwdriver and a printout of a pelican parts guide.
>>
>>14097336
Oh, and the door lock actuators. Another 1 hour job that takes minimal tools or experience.

>only one person knows the glory of corollas
>>
>>14097336
It depends on where you are. In sofla most are on original parts and just float around from dumb owner to dumb owner barely running.
>>
>>14097331
i did get really lucky desu, but it does need a new clutch

>>
>>14097244
Unless you're a trust fundie or plan on living in your parents basement indefinitely you'll want the soul sucking job over whatever shitty part time job you have right now.
>>
>>14097310
You're an oblivious fanboy if you believe this. This is coming from a BMW owner and has inlaws with an e39 and e46 and a father that use to have an e38. Old Bmws have a high upkeep.
>>
>>14097614
just because a car has 500 suspension links and it takes forever to replace them doesn't make it unreliable. most of the shit that breaks on an e39 is stuff a corolla does without anyway. but you are right
>>
>>14097336
nope, most customers are like the third or fourth owner by now. These people tend to patch these cars one part at a time vs overhauling the whole cooling system. Pelicanparts is an awesome resource though. Also no one has mentioned how awfully these engines leak oil. Oil pan gasket isn't a small job to do. The oil filter housing that tend to leak a lot is easier though.
>>
>>14097279
I seriously have a massive fetish for these things. The senpai had so many when I was young.
They hardly exist, but when I see a nice one I cream.
