I DD a 97.
It's OK to DD.
Nb. 99 to 05. Or 06 and newer if you have the money.
The only reason is for the higher suspension mounts for the nb which could be switched over to a NA 91-97 if you wanted to.
They really aren't too bad to DD. You don't worry about wear and tear because they are cheap and cheap to fix. Just don't expect to survive getting t-boned by a suv.

Not OP, I was just asking in general. I know the NA is loud as hell and I do have the budget for an NB, but what potentially draws me away is the noise level because I don't want to get headaches from cruising on the Autobahn at 80 mph.

Every non-luxury Japanese car I've ever driven has been noisy as fuck, even newer ones. If noise is a concern get some extra $$$ for a BMW Z3.

If you're dead set on DDing a Miata and want something fun and reliable without being a racecar, then go with the NB. You can get them for less than $6.5k and do any nifty little mods that you want to it, like a hardtop, intake, and dyno tune.
If you are just looking for a fun car for $6.5k or less, let me toss you out some suggestions.
