Is the "you don't have to change your oil every 3000 miles" a truth, or just a meme?

You have people out there saying you don't have to change your oil until every 4000, 5000, or even 6000 miles, and the 3000 mile mark is just there to increase oil sales and raise mechanics' profits.

What does /o/ think about this?
>>
My Focus has a 20000 km (12500 mile) oil change interval. Apparently this is perfectly normal here in Germany. It's mechanically the same car that's sold in the US.

Do we have better oil? Or just different user manuals?
>>
I reckon up to 10k, good quality oil will be fine. What car are you on about anon?
>>
>>14094601
that sounds about right for a new car here in the US. I know a lot of GM cars don't even specify a change interval and just say to use the "oil life meter" which usually ends up telling you to change it ~10k miles

>>14094589
the truth is that oil is just a lot better nowadays than it was even 15 years ago. The 3k oil change will die with the baby boomers. It's totally unnecessary
>>
I just went through the manual for my s10 a few days ago, it said for city driving change it every 3k. But if you do a lot of freeway driving thean 5k is fine.

>tldr follow the recommendations from the people who created your car
>>
>>14094589
I change mine at 6k so that at the bar I can loudly proclaim that I change my oil half as often as you.
>>
>>14094589
Read the fucking manual is the only advice about changing your oil that you will ever need.
>>
>>14094648
Same, 10.000km intervalls for me.
>>
>>14094639
well my Focus is from '03.
And there's a guy here who offers "lifetime oil changes", which means he'll drain your oil, put his special oil in and you'll never have to do another oil change.

He gives a 10 year, unlimited mileage warranty on engine failures after that. The service isn't cheap, but my point is there's nothing that says an engine's lubricant needs to be replaced.
>>
It depends on the quality of the oil, run Super Tech or gas station brand and you better change it at or around 3k, get top shelf synth like Amsoil you can go easily for 10k or more.

Of course this will all vary with how you drive or if you're pulling a load or something.
>>

Here is how I look at it
If you beat on your car
>non synthetic 3k
>synthetic 5-6k maybe?
If you don't beat on your car
>non synthetic 5k+ maybe?
>synthetic 12k sounds good

Basically if you rev your car out a lot it can't hurt to change the oil more frequently to ensure proper lubrication at high rpm. But if you are a soccer mom never going above 3k rpm then change it at whatever the oil you are using recommends or longer

Is Super Tech really that much worse, though?
Don't all oils have to pass certain tests to be SAE or DOT or whatever certified?
>>
Follow the manual.
5k severe schedule for my corolla 0w20 SN
6k odd miles for my Z I use a 10w30 SN with a zinc additive.
3k for my f150 5w40 SN.

>passat 35i like this one
>1.8l 90hp machine
>never saw an oil change before I bought it
>bought it with 160k km

oil was quite dark when I changed it but engine ran great, still.
>>
>>14094831
All oils have to pass a the test so if your car requires api sm and supertech is sm/sn your fine to run it. Everyone else is just brand whoring. That being said I run Mobil 1 in my new car, and whatever i feel like synthetic in my others
>>
>>14094831
It always seem to burn up and lose its properties faster than brand oils, it won't ruin your car but you have to keep an eye on it. I've runned it before when shekels are tight it goes dark quick and smells but it kept me running.
>>
Any advice beyond following the manual is wrong.
>>
change your oil according to what your owner manual says. intervals vary widely depending on the vehicle and manufacturer. i don't understand why this is so hard for people.
>>
get your oil analyzed after you change it. Only way to know for sure. Everything you read or hear in real life is speculation.

this. i change my oil at 5,000 miles because it's specified by the manufacturer

>yfw you don't listen to manufacturers guidelines
>>
>>14094647
>follow the recommendations from the people who created your car

yes goyim, change your oil every 5k like the manual says to, the oil companies thank you
>>
>>14094589
My father and his father have always changed the oil on our cars at 5000 miles religiously. We've also never had a car die due to an engine issue. Personally, I change mine every 3000 but that's because I drive a Mazdaspeed and I've heard it's good for them.
>>
Your owners manual or a service manual will have all the intervals and capacities.

I go about 7,000 miles. Tried out Blackstone oil analysis and they told me to go 9,000 miles. I use full synthetic.

German synthetic oil is much better than anything you can find in the states
