So my parents want me to get a 2011 Kia Rio from a dealership with 81,000 miles on it for $7,000 out the door.

That's literally all I have in savings, but they keep insisting it's such a great deal and that I can just build it back up, while I need to head to college soon and find a place to stay, laying for all of this on my own.

I already said no, but just curious on what /o/'s take on this is. Did I make the right decision? Am I not crazy for thinking $7,000 for a fucking Kia Rio is a little outrageous?
>>
>>14093986
Get a $1000 corolla. Spend maybe $200 in fixing it up.
Drive it till the end of time
>>
>>14093986
you parents are fucking stupid
>>
>>14094006
This OP. Or be a little extravagant and get one for $1500. Your parents are dumb.
>>
Like the previous poster said, just buy a sub-$2000 shitbox like a civic or corolla to cart you around. Having a new shitbox, especially blowing all your money on one is fucking stupid
>>
Yeah that's some dumb shit nigga.
For that price you could get a decent condition BMW with the same mileage or one with higher miles and have some money left over for any repairs that might come up.
Or you could buy a civic/corolla/camry for $2-3k and pocket the rest.
>>
>>14094026

>hurr your first car has to be a piece of shit econobox
fuck off
>>
>>14094043
Doesn't have to be. But it makes more financial sense. Especially with college.
>>
>>14094047
fuck off man

holy fuck you are butthurt
>>
>>14094043
It should be. If you're the kind of person who would blow all of their savings on a new shitbox that will just depreciate, then you're a special kind of fucking retard.
>>
>>14094048
What's your problem, man? You're the one came in attacking him and now you're telling him to fuck off?

You guys are dicks
why should I buy a car im not happy with
live is too short for that

why buy a corolla for $2k when i can get something great for the same price
>>
>>14094061
OP here. I hope you know I'm not that retard that's telling everybody that makes sense to fuck off.
>>
>>14094065
>something great for the same price
You can get a corolla for $1000 that will last many many years and allow you to save money.
What else "great" can you get?
>>
>>14094065
Dude why are you so upset, like seriously?

Nobody said you couldn't do that.
>>
>>14094065
what else could you buy thats not a shitbox for 1k
>>
>>14094065
what car should you buy then for 7k that wont require a fuckton of maintenance

shitboxes basically dont require any
>>
>>14094074
>>14094076
>>14094077
>>14094087

i want to buy a sports car
who are you to say i cant?
>>
>>14094093
So go make your own thread. You aren't OP
>>
>>14094093
no one said you shoudnt, but economically you should just buy a shitbox for college.

go ahead buy a sports car that will require expensive maintenance and dat insurance
>>
I'd say aim for the 2-3k range. For $1000 you might get lucky and find a solid car, but you'll probably end up with lots of problems.

2-3k leaves you with most of your savings and probably less headaches. Also, I agree with Corolla/Civic/Camry or maybe an Accord.
>>
Look for an EK hatch civic.
They were incredibly bare bones and reliable.
No power steering, no ac, manual windows, manual trans, there's way less shit to break on these cars.

Also ignore that one anon who's being a salty prick. And yes you made the right decision not buying a shitty Kia.
Old 90s civics and corollas are going to be more reliable than that.
>>
>>14094093
Dude, grow up. Nobody said you couldn't. Stop crying about nothing.
>>
>>14094093
then what sports car do you want OP

you come here for advice and tell us all to fuck off cause you dont want something econobox that will benefit you in the future
>>
>>14093986
Fuck Kia , 7k buys alot of car.
>>
>>14094115
>civic

I dont want a fucking econobox you fucktard
>>
Get a mid 2000s accord for 4-5K have 1-2K for security.
The accord will have good reliability and will be bit funner to drive
>>
>>14094114
I bought a corolla for $300 barely running.
Spent $500 in repairs.
Replaced trans
All gaskets
Rebuilt carburetor
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor
Tranny seals
Clutch, throwout bearing, flywheel resurface
Etc etc
$800 solid car
>>
>>14094111
Why does college change anything
>>
>>14094123
OP here, again. I am not that fucking retard. I am actually listening to people's advice. I might start looking for a Honda hatch, I've always wanted one anyways.
>>
>>14094136
That also includes
Clutch master and slave
Brake master
Brake pads
And a timing belt
>>
>>14094142
You need to pay for other shit:
>Rent
>Food
>Tuition
>Gas

You can be homeless and starving in your "sports car" which you can't afford to drive if you want.
>>
>>14094142
>hurr durr why does college not change anything

You are fucking broke when you are in college you have to pay for
>school
>food
>bills
>>
>>14094159
If college isn't free you shouldn't go
And sleeping in a car is comfy
Materialistic millenials , when will they learn
>>
>>14094136
>>14094146

If you're willing to wrench yourself and fix the car up, you'll probably save a bunch of money by going this route.

OP didn't mention anything about mechanical skills, so he'd probably have to pay to get all this work done.
>>
Alternative to Corolla/other shitbox is a Celica. It has the reliability of shitboxes and the price but looks a little bit sportier, is easier to find in manual, and much more fun to drive.
7th gens look like lamborghinis to normies with a body kit if you want to pick up chicks.

I did not

This thread is confusing
>>
>>14094173
I can do simple shit like replace a radiator and things like that. Other than that I'm not very well mechanically versed.
>>
>>14094180
>nice car
when did i say that
>>
>>14094183
Just use the internet. There's video guides for probably every single kind of service for almost any car on youtube or on brand forums.

You literally just watch what they do and copy it.
>>
>>14094145
Good, I'm the guy that recommended the Ek hatch. We have one as a beater for our family. It's so simple to work on and fun to drive with the manual.

The only drawback is no AC so on hot days in traffic it gets a bit warm.

You'll have to sort through all the Honda kiddies though, some of the hatches out there might be riced up and modded a bit.

Kia and Hyundai are shit don't buy one.
>>
>>14093986
>buying a kia Rio

Sounds like a good deal to me if you want a moderately comfortable a2b shitbox.
>>
>>14094206

but i want a sports car man
>>
>>14094215
Lmao fuck off dude, stop trying to pretend to be me. You just look dumb.
>>
>>14094215
You aren't op. Fuck off.
You go buy your sports car then, nobody is stopping you.
>>
>>14093986
What the fuck is you parents' reasoning behind buying that piece of shit? You can buy a better car with 2k$
>>
>>14094215
Good for you. Go buy a $7k used Porche with 200k miles. Have fun with that.
>>
>>14094234
Because my first car was a $500 Cavalier that we got from my step dad's aunt's friend-from-church's old alcoholic husband that was a piece of shit but lasted me about a year.

My second car was a 2000 Mustang that we got from some nigger in the ghetto with 160,000 miles for $2500. Dumb move on my part but I felt like I desperately needed a car.

This time I'm going to actually take things a little slower and look around for a decent car that I like.
>>
>>14094250
>>14094231
>>14094228
you guys are shit
fuck you for implying the ek civic cant be a sports car
>>
>>14094301
Grow up dude, you're not funny.
>>
>>14093986
No don't do it. Look for something decent around the 2.5k range and spend a bit to fix that up instead of blowing all your savings on a Kia
>>
>>14094323
>>14094302

why cant civic compete?
>>
>>14093986
Fuck you could buy a 7th gen celica that's in great condition from half that much...

Your parents are tards
>>
>>14094335
Fuck off. Grow up.
>>
>>14094111
Or just buy Miata. Sports car feelz with shitbox maintenance.
>>
Use that money to buy an FD
>>
>>14093986

Drop 2-3k on a 2000is buick lesabre or park avenue. You should be able to find one with around the same mileage in that price range. Take car of the bastard, and it will run for another 200k without giving you any shit. That price for a Rio is fucking highway robbery and your parents are idiots.
>>
>>14094411
If by "FD" you mean a roller without an engine and transmission, then sure.
>>
>>14094487
You can get a salvage one for $2000, and some pop up for 8-12K around here
>>
You're going to college, OP? You're SUPPOSED to drive around in a piece of shit. It's part of the experience. You're supposed to pick up your friends in a car with a window that won't roll down and other things you have to explain to passengers.

My first car was a hand me down 1995 Geo Tracker 4-door with 180,000 miles on it. Towards the end, I had to roll the window down to open the driver door, I kept a gallon of tap water in the back for the radiator, The warning lights had all been cut to sneak it past the smog check, and the muffler was shot so it sounded like an angry terrier growling through a bullhorn. THAT is a college car. Drove that piece of shit into the fucking ground!

Here's what I want you to do, OP. I want you to go on craigslist, and click on Cars & Trucks. Select 3 cylinders and under transmission, select manual. Buy the cheapest car in the search results (will most likely be a Geo Metro or some form of Daewoo) without even thinking about it, and drive that for the rest of college.

God speed.
>>
>>14093986
I'm not sure what they're selling for but that is definitely more than the car should be worth..your parents are probably just looking at the prices for other cars of that year in general.

I disagree with the Toyota/Honda fan boys though, 96-99 Suburban is the king of the cheap transportation hill.
>>
>>14094545
>buy the cheapest car in the results without even thinking about it

Opinion discarded
>>
>>14094545
no thanks man
fuck off
>>
>>14094629
Haha yea that's probably what OP's parents would have him do if he didn't have the 7 gs
>>
>>14094635
Grow up. You're not funny.
