Are CAIs a necessary and obvious upgrade, or are they snek oil trying to rob plebs out of hundreds for no upgrade?
some cars come with stock cai, and people go and make them into hot air intakes

this
can confirm
is that a roush?
>>14088558
Most modern airboxes are as good as they can get from the factory.

Of you're paranoid just buy an intake air temp sensor and manifold pressure sensor.
You won't find much difference. Unless thevstck air filter is clogged with shit.
Cold air intakes are definitely good, but a lot of people don't install them correctly and do retarded shit like locate them somewhere in the vicinity of their header with no heat shield.
As far as I know, you won't see any gains unless you do an ECU tune.
A lot of new cars have intakes that are designed with baffles that create turbulence that helps direct airflow. You can lose power on many cars with an aftermarket intake.

JRE did a non bias test on CAI's for LS3 Camaro's
Cold Air Inductions made something like 15 more HP on the dyno with no tune. Others like you said needed a tune for you to really see a difference in numbers, the rest were negligible. However, on boosted cars it's not a bad investment if you intent on moving more air.

And then they went and bought the S2000 that had a CAI and after replacing with the stock box they lost power. Ended up keeping the aftermarket CAI.

fuck off reddit
>>14088624
not really no
>>14088558
It depends on the car. It's more or less a supporting modification because when you're making roughly twice as much power as the stock output the oem intake just won't cut it.
>>14088624
VW/Audi stock airboxes are HORRID. The Jetta has the worst air-cooling design I've ever seen, probably the only econobox actually worth getting a CAI for.
>>14088558
is that a couch?
depends if the manufacturer put resonator chambers in the stock intake.
removing em always improves power, but at the cost of intake noise.
also, K&N filters are bullshit

Also this
Flow mods use to be actual power adders but now they really don't make much of a difference. Stock flow these days are really good, but flow mods are most useful once you really start making power. Adding bigger cams, superchargers, turbos, etc. The hi-flow mods are made to handle more power whereas OEM would choke the performance

Is that a pouch?
>meanwhile at Subaru HQ in Japan
>aahhh yess, we shall make our airbox more shitty to get fuckbois to buy more aftermarket parts
>Tojo, get Cobb on the rine and strike a dreal they cannot refuse
Look, if manufacturers could get more gains out of their airboxes to boost numbers, they would. The stock airbox in the vast majority of cars is probably the best airbox you'll get.
>>14090126
hahahah
>>14090126
what are EPA standards, you daft fucking cunt. Thats like says "Subaru makes the exhaust the best they can, because if they could make it better they would!"
>>14090126
>the best airbox you'll get.
Probably because almost no one replaces an airbox with an aftermarket airbox. Generally when you're trying to increase power you're not concerned with Heimholtz resonance.
>>14090168
So after all of this, what term are you promulgating here, "filter box"?
>>14090151
two very different things. there is no EPA gain to make by restricting atmospheric airflow/creating an artifically rich mixture under load.
>>14090126
nice lies
>>14088558
is that a roush
>>14090179
There is huge gain for OEM to make the stock intake restrictive to muffle the intake noises for the grandmas and boomers
engine sound changed a bit with a different intake & there was a 'smidgen' more power
>>14090211
But they're too deaf to notice in the first place.....
>>14090227
>hearing aids
and when they hear, they're going to call Silverman Helps and all hell will break loose
>>14090168
What is heimholz resonance? Is that just obnoxious intake noise?
>>14088558
Depends on the car. On the brz/frs none of them make any worthwhile gains. One of them even makes 15 less horsepower than the stock airbox. Most of them will also relocate your maf sensor, which messes up your afr unless you scale your maf sensor in your tune. You can get the same gains a good cold air intake will get with a cheap drop in filter.
