Thoughts on the rsx type s? I've been wanting one for a long time and I finally got enough money to get a decent one (10k).

Any other cars I should look into as well?
>>
>>14087883
I've been wanting an integra for so long, I just dont wanna settle for a civic or anything. If it helps im a college student

Do it. But there are other cars in the class to consider:

2000-2005 Toyota Celica GTS (180 HP)
2002-2004 Ford Focus ZX3 SVT (170 HP)
1999-2004 Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo (150 or 180 HP depending on trim and model year)
2003-2007 Infiniti G35 coupe (280-290 HP)
2004-2007 Saturn Ion Redline (205 HP)
2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged (205 HP)
2005-2010 Scion tC (160 HP)

They all competed against each other and all made similar power.
>>
>>14087909
>Infiniti G35 coupe
I was looking at this one as well, all depends on what price I can get a decent one for. Think the insurance rates would differ too much between all these cars?

yes. The cars from that list I would think would have the lowest insurance are the Saturn, Ford, and Volkswagen

Seriously, get the G35.
>>
>>14087932
whats wrong with the rsx? g35s are nice but thats at the upper end of my budget

ignore him. nothing wrong with the RSX. The only problem with them is they're based on the Civic. There's a LOT that will swap over between the RSX and the Civic coupe
>>
For $10k, you get

> high insurance premiums
especially if you want to be protected in the event of theft
> a coupe with a backseat that can't really be used
> a performance car that requires premium, but only delivers 205 horsepower
15-second 1/4 mile - hang onto your seat!
> an economy car that's only rated at 28 mpg hwy
Don't forget about premium fuel
> worse handling than its predecessor

Sounds like a winner OP.
>>
>>14087994
i need criticism like this so i can consider other cars. Also backseat space doesnt matter for me
>>
>>14087883
I've heard the have phenomenal handling and they have a highly tunable engine. I would looking a G35 coupe if you are stuck on a coupe. My cousin's boyfriend bought one with a burnt up clutch with nothing else wrong with it and clean for $2800 and after fixing it he's only put $3500 towards it so you can definitely find them cheap if you are willing to mess with repairs, which chances are you might do upgrades anyway so for sure shop around for a few months and see what you can find.
>>
>>14088016
Again. Nothing wrong with the RSX. the BIG difference is it uses a Macpherson strut type front suspension as opposed to a more expensive double wishbone front suspension as used by the older Integra. THEORETICALLY, AT THE LIMIT, the older Integra will outhandle the RSX. But normally, you'll never notice a difference. Only bench racers give 2 shits about the front suspension setup.
EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAR you look at at that price in that class is going to have a macpherson strut arrangement. Its not a bad system.
>>
>>14088035
i appreciate your information , now i just gotta learn how to haggle on craigslist ;-;
>>
>>14088042
>Look at the market.
>inspect the car.
>decide for yourself what the fair market value of the car judging by the current market trends and the cars condition.
>Decide on a price you're willing to pay, and STICK to it.
If you can't get it at your price, walk away. There's plenty of others out there.
>>
>>14087993
It has more to do with the ep3 chassis not the em2 even though they all share parts
>>
>>14087883
Make sure you set aside an engine oil budget for all of the oil you're going to burn.
>>
>>14088179
Chassis-wise, the subframe is different due to the different engine families, but they're otherwise interchangeable.
>>
I own an RSX, a 2002 (first "gen" one). Here's some notes:
>Honda leather
Total shit, gonna fuck up unless you baby it
>Honda AC control
I have a busted AC, I know 3 other people with RSX's - all fucked up AC
>Black interior holds dust well
Makes your shit look nasty, unless you obsess over cleaning
>doesn't really handle all that well
My older civic was less shitty in the corners, and it's sometimes scary to do a U-turn because it has the turning radius of a tank
>Highest fatality rate of any car
Mostly because boy-racers love this car, might affect insurance

here's what I like about it
>2 seats, a back seat for insurance purposes, and massive trunk
I like the massive trunk. I moved to college using just my RSX.
>Girls sometimes think it's a nice car if you're in college
Girls think it's equivalent to a WRX STI or some shit despite being a honda shitbox
>Looks like a civic
I own a silver, non-spoiler'd model. It looks just like a civic. Cops never really notice me unless I'm going full WOT
>Reliable
it's a honda

AMA if you want any info about it

Transmission is garbage

Enjoy your repair bills
>>
>>14088217
The automatics are garbage. The manuals are god-tier.
And the Type S was manual only, so its a moot point
>>
>>14088223
I was under the impression earlier Type S's had a 3rd gear that liked to pop out?
>>
>>14088228
Not to my knowledge.
>>
>>14088228
It's not the transmission it's the shifter linkage for the 5spd, remedied by new bushings and shifter balls.

Most guys just upgrade straight into the buddy club short shifter
>>
I'm honda biased love Honda's with that being said for 10k you can buy a cobalt ss turbo with low kms, with a factory optioned tune you could get over 300hp. The turbo ss a pretty fast car, in a straight line, on the track too.

The g35 below 2007 is not worth it and it's hard to find 2007+ for 10gs. They did several revisions including a much better engine.
>>
>>14088223

No they aren't.

Prevalent 3rd gear issues.
>>
Also forgot to mention 06 is the best year for the type s but even then, it's not as good as the turbo ss IMO.

RSXS has no stock lsd either
>>
>>14088281
OP here, ive definitely heard about 3rd gear issues but apparently its not a difficult fix
>>
>>14088287
Not hard to put lsd in btw and while at it upgrade clutch since oem sucks.
>>14087994
Can run on 89 octane no problem did it for a year when I was poor.
15sec 1/4 mile? Only if Jesus takes the wheel.
I have gotten 30-34mpg aslong as you keep revs down.
$10k is to much for one also 05-06 should be between $6-8k tops unless you find one driven by a grandpa original owner and has all service records.
Theft? Never have to worry it has never been as in much risk than integras, plus it has immobiler built in stock.- but if its been kpro"d then worry about theft.
It can keep up with stock ss cobalts do it all the time too but if they are modified no chance even with bolt ons
>>
>>14087883
burns oil , more problems because compression is kinda high that s what i ve been told . i own a base and i love it . Just did a rallycross (first one ever) and i finished 3rd. RallySporteXperimental ftw
>>
Be a grown man and get a TL Type S for 10k
>>
>>14088217
meh just dont shift like it s a race car be gentle with it and you ll be good to go.
>>
>>14089113
>Not hard to put an lsd in

You literally have to disassemble the entire transmission.
>>
>>14087883
Are you in ca?
Buy mine, 02 type s with 100k.
>>
>>14089598
Not that hard for experienced person with the right tools. Hard no, tedious yeah.
>>
>>14089593
>buy the same pigfat boat I have instead of a light-ish coupe that's almost completely different to drive
>>
>>14089808
Yeah i am in california, bay area actually
>>
>>14089113
would running on 89 octane be bad for it in the long run or does it not matter? Gas is pretty cheap nowadays anyways so im not too worried about gas pricing
>>
>>14087918
>>14087927

The g35 coupe actually has a lower insurance rates than the 350z because it's technically the coupe version of a sedan. And it's practically the same as a 350.
>>
>>14093860
I know that. I was just saying the lower insurance rates are generally given to the cars least likely to be owned by ricers. How much you wanna bet the insurance on a Saturn Ion Redline is lower than the insurance on an Infiniti G35 coupe?
>>
The rsx is a good car ive owned one for years but yes it does burn oil when you push it otherwise its fine just got to watch the oil
>>
>>14093957
Does it really burn a considerable amount of oil? How much did it burn for you
>>
>>14094101
It only matters when you beat the living shit out of the engine.
The Type S has Honda's original VTEC system, which uses oil pressure to keep the valves open longer. THAT'S why it burns oil.

Not OP but

Prelude vs Del Sol vs Coupe Civic

Which one is the most cost effective for power / design / modification (non rice)

I was looking at some RSX type S but in my area people want 8k for the beat ones.
>>
I have an 08 TSX 6MT among others.

Rock solid.
>>
>>14094278
Civic Coupe. bear in mind that to modify a 01-05 Civic Coupe for performance involves an engine swap. The D17 engine just doesn't modify well.
>>
>>14094278
Preludes are the best looking out of that bunch. Whenever a nice prelude drives by it always breaks a few necks
>>
>>14094358
I've mostly seen pretty bad condition ones on the highways so I do agree i'd like to see one with a great paint job and non stanced.

So for mod/tuning 2006+ Civics? Si variant the best option to look into?

>So for mod/tuning 2006+ Civics? Si variant the best option to look into?
2006+ Civics are the best option if you don't plan on swapping the engine, and only if you get the Si variant.

2001-2005 Civic's can be swapped to a K-series from an RSX using just about all factory parts. I have a couple saved lists of the parts required if you want. Pic is a K20-swapped 2001-2003 Civic Coupe.

2006+ Civic Si's come with a K20 stock. 2006+ non Si Civics got this absolutely trash R18 engine with no aftermarket support.
>>
>>14094448
Thanks for the info.

I'll look into the 2006+ Si models and check out some forums for mods/tunes.

Also, 2002-2005 Civic Si's were hatchback only and came with a K20, so you might wanna look into those as well. Pic is an 04-05 Civic Si
>>
>>14094496
Also, 2002-2005 Civic Si's made 160 HP, using the same engine as the base model RSX. If you want power out of it, you need to swap the head and pistons for those of the RSX Type S.

2006-2011 Civic Sis made 197 Hp from their 2.0L
>>
>>14093717
Not really. its meant to run on 90 octane. I put 40k on it with 89oct. Once a month would throw premium 91 really couldn't notice much of a difference in performance or economy.
I have 130k miles now had for 11 yrs.
It does burn oil but not much maybe 1/2 qt every 2 months/1k miles no leaks no smoke just the way it is.
If you get one make sure valves are lashed or done recently. If you drive it hard have it done every 30-40k miles as you will get random misfires.
>>
>>14088228
I have an 06 type s Integra and third gear can be difficult to get in sometimes
>>
>>14094278

If you get an EM2, you really won't be disappointed.

The car really handles well for stock and is a real treat to corner in. The suspensions are kinda stiff so you'll feel every bump all throughout your body.

As for space, there's plenty assuming that you're not lugging around 3 or more people. Backseats can fit shorties and small people but aren't suitable for big guys (for you).

Trunk space is amazing, but the trunk cover is shit. The EX trim has a nice radio system with an aux port.

Interior is fairly nice too. Feels pretty sturdy, secure, and doesn't feel cheap.

Upgrade the brakepads. At least with mine, the OEM brake pads were pretty weak compared to most cars.
>>
>>14094576
Its not a deal breaker though right? You still like the car?
>>
great little DD that can also be a fun performance car. if you can find one in good shape with a decent price tag, I'd say consider picking it up. It is a Honda though, so at low RPM the torque is negligible, plus the backseats aren't comfortable at all
>>14094609
not all RSXs have that problem, the gearbox in mine works like a charm
>>
>>14094624
I guess i gotta just get lucky then when i pick it out on cl.
>>
>>14094506
You need head, and cams which brings it up close to a2 specs but without kpro it's lacking the a3 isn't anything without a turbo that's why I'm doing a k24/k20z1 swap
>>
If I had a RSX-S I would
>pull the K20
>get a k24
>put K20 head on K24
>put K20 crank in K24
>+cams/springs
>+high comp k24 pistons std bore
>+custom rods (longer, achieve perfect r/s ratio 1.75)
>drop long rod K20 into RSX
>rev to 10k all day
>>
>>14096177
What prevents you from just doing that then? Sounds like a decent idea
>>
Is a 1998 Honda Prelude bad?
>>
>>14096177
>buy car
>buy k24 engine
>engine rebuild to replace crank, pistons, rods
>head rebuild for new cam

Thats alot of money for that little power
