Because government fuel economy standards are getting a bit ridiculous. They expect a 55 MPG average on all cars, and a 30 MPG average on all light-duty trucks by 2026. That's a HUGE jump considering the current average is 26 MPG.

Get a mazda6 for midsize commuter. Excellent mpg with driving dynamics that won't make you wanna kill yourself, in fact you'll have fun driving it. They also upped their aesthetics and look very good, and are reliable/cheap to own. There's a reason they're highly praised around auto journalists.
