I don't have a scanner, but I do have a radio in my truck with all the local police frequencies dialed in (just as good as a scanner). It's pointless to use, as nobody broadcasts their location.
If you're on the highway, a CB radio will work much better as truck drivers routinely point out speed traps to one another (it's illegal for commercial trucks to use radar detectors and related equipment).
Also, familiarize yourself with what equipment the police use to measure speed (by law it must be reported on your ticket in addition to the last calibration date). If it's just radar, a good radar detector will work wonders and should suffice, though nowadays a lot of departments are switching to laser...
To combat laser detectors, you need to minimize ANY reflective surface on your car. Police officers are trained to aim for the front plate and headlights (most reflective surfaces up front). KEEP THAT IN MIND! Look into Veil automatic spray. It is designed to scatter the laser beam and give you a bit more time before they can get a clear reading. Also, check to see if it is legal to use a laser jammer in your state. (A lot of states are beginning to outlaw them, but you can still find them around. DO NOT confuse with a RADAR jammer... ALL RADAR JAMMERS ARE HIGHLY ILLEGAL!).
Last but not least, NOTHING can replace common sense and good judgement.

Yes and no. A V1 is a very good (the best radar detector IMO), but it would be useless if the local cops use laser. If they do, by the time the V1 goes off (IF it goes off), they already have your speed. Game over...
