If they don't clip on I will use double sided tape on the outside clip to make it stay on. It works well with the febreeze ones with the liquid inside, but the solid ones have never worked well in any capacity for me.
More tips for good smelling car
Get activated charcoal and hide it in areas. Good spots are under the seats by the vents and in your spare tire area. If you get the ones incased in soft cloth, you can shove them virtually anywhere. Cat litter in a sock works really well too, but kinda ghetto and your car will smell like litter which may or may not be better than the scent you're trying to get rid of.

your O2 sensor can be fooled into thinking you still have a cat
you can finger-paint racing stripes on it to make it faster
You can rip out the intake snorkel in Boxsters and Caymans to make them sound cooler
delete Cats and rear O2s
delete Evap valve
delete any resonator chambers on the intake
