Forget the rotary: get the 250cc, inline four cylinder, DOHC four valve per cylinder engine from an early nineties Honda 250RR/MC22.
They scream to almost 20,000RPM and can make close to 50HP. It would make those littlr karts into miniature F1 cars basically.
Hear the engine here:

how the fuck

The answer is Honda.
Back in 1966, Honda made the RC166, a 250cc, six cylinder, DOHC, four valve per cylinder engine that also revved to almost 20,000RPM and it made 62HP.
That is 210HP per liter engine, NA, in 1966.

What was their lifespan? Why doesn't anybody do that nowadays if it were any good?

hp/l is a bad metric since it obv favors smaller engines. modern kart engines are 125cc and make 50hp.
but the rc166 is a pretty good guy regardless

they're old GP bikes, they did mad mad things

not really, it favours undersquare ones
>>14073298
I think you mean Oversquare.
Undersquare engines hate revving.
>>14073298
well yeah obviously, but kart engines arent undersquare yet they make obscene hp/l. a built KZ1 will make 400hp/l and its stroke is longer than it's bore.
the higher displacement the harder it is to make it efficient, unless it has like 16 cylinders.

Diminishing returns.
