i need a new car since mine is trashed.
i'm thinking about a Mercedes Benz diesel, the 190 D with the 2.5 liter engine. its supposed to be very reliable, and i can get one cheap as shit.
any ideas?
how is maintainance on these cars?
anyone here own one?
the have few hp so i can insure them cheap, the only thing i worry about is the repairs and the cost of them. i have a old bike (1986) and did a lot of engine work on it already, like changing the camshaft and pistonrings and rockers and stuff like that, so im not completely retarded when it comes to screwing around.

You are on a hamerican board, they are a bit rarer now stateside. The 2.5 na diesel with a 5 speed is ridiculously reliable. They can have issues with the heater core if the coolant didn't get frequently changed. It takes about 2 days to swap and requires complete dash removal
The 2.5 turbo with 5 speed is also very reliable.. And fun.
The auto transmission s are o.k. I think they may have a few issues here and there, but Benz did make a ton so replacement isn't to expensive

Old FWD shitboxes like that usually ran with 6 to 8 liters but the old Subaru 4x4 system sucked the living shit out of those little engines. Meaning they felt weak and guzzled like Vikings because of that monster drive train power loss.

i actually made a excel sheet with the consumption from 2011-2012, pic related.
it doesnt feel weak though, its really fun to drive and not too slow. i can drive a constant 160-170 kmh (only indicated of course) on the autobahn with it. and the acceleration in the city is far enough too.

No monies for a new car right now.
But yeah, the 2.5 Turbo is one of my favorite car of all times.
I've driven one before and you really feel the difference the Turbo makes when compared to the NA version.

I have no doubt it will be reliable, non-turbo I assume. Slow as a turd, but I think if you want solid and good aesthetic transportation it'll be a good choice.

An M3 might be cheaper then an Evo, but a regular 16v 2.3 should still be cheaper.
Other option would be to take any run of the mill W201, and swap in another 16V engine - a pushrod V8 one. It's a shame Mercedes and Chrysler parted ways, otherwise a 5.7 engine would make the perfect transplant. Or maybe a 6.4-based 426. Is it a coincidence both Mercedes and Mopar's most famous engines both displace a hair below 7 liters (the 6.9 AMG and the 426 respectively) I think not.
