It's faster in every way to a DeLorean, and that costs $20,000-40,000 as the memiest car. AE86s weren't exactly a typical econobox in the 80s with a DOHC engine derived from the Cosworth BDA, 2100-2200 lbs, LSD and disc brakes all around. A better set up car than the majority of "sporty" trim models at the time.
There were only about 6000 Corolla GTSs imported between 85 and 87. That's less than Supras. Out of those 6k, rust, accidents and neglect has probably killed the majority. They're relatively rare cars, so yeah, they'll have collector value even if they don't perform like new cars which is a dumb as shit comparison. People collect shit ass performing cars all the time because of some other significance to them.
OP's car isn't worth it though. No real point in getting a RHD import when you can get the US equivalent in much better shape for $5-6k.

Foxbody mustangs are getting to be collectors items at this point but this is probably the only real suggestion to give to someone who wants a lightweight RWD hardtop vehicle alternative to the AE86.
Also gutting brings about a ton of issues with daily driver-ability.
