I feel like Honda, Toyota and Nissan have lost their souls and their cars lack emotion and that ability to make you feel good and put a smile on your face.

tl;dr
Post your favorite examples of their cars when they had a soul.

How do you determine whether a car has a "soul" or not? What is it about the way a modern car drives that makes it soulless compared to how an older one does?

I own a 2005 Mustang GT that I bought new, and I love it to the point that I doubt I'll ever sell it.

Sure it's not perfect. It could handle better, the interior could have been made better. But I have a blast working on it, I think it looks great without the excessive curviness of the later models. It's something I genuinely enjoy owning and driving to the point that the car will probably be with me in time for me to laugh at my son when he asks to drive it.

It's not really something you can quantify or tell by looking at a spec sheet.

I have a theory on this, tell me what you think.

Modern technology has come a key component in every facet of our everyday lives. Technology which once only existed on computers spread to our phones, and from there, they spread everywhere. My computer, my laptop, my phone, my touchscreen fridge/oven/etc, I'm surrounded by it all day. I'm probably spending more of my life looking at a screen than anything else.

All this technology has become a part of our vehicles too. Getting into your new car isn't much different than getting into your office chair in front of a computer. Everything looks and feels digital.

But if you drive an older car, devoid of any infotainment systems, screens, etc, it stands out from the rest of your day. You're not operating another computer, you're in something else entirely. That's why they feel special.

My theory on it is that people used to just try to make the best car they could given the conditions they needed to meet. It gave just about every car from the basest Corolla to the best Mustang a sense of personality.
But somewhere along the line, people bitched about any automotive feedback. They didn't want a metal and plastic family member. They didn't understand what to do with the information from automotive feedback. They wanted mobile sensory deprivation tanks. And now they want sensory deprivation tanks that connect to your phone.
This led to only sports cars or cars of a sporty nature (EG: Ford Mustang, Honda Civic Si, Chevy Cobalt SS, etc) having any sense of a personality and feedback. Which is what (I think) has led /o/ to claim that

Reminder. Modern cars are aggressive blobs that I don't really like either, but every generation looks similar within itself. What do you think people who grew up in the 60s thought about 80s, everything-an-edgy-wedge, cars? Why do you like them now when you probably didn't give them a second glance as a kid and lusted for the Diablo?

I have an AE86 and love it, but I'm not kidding myself that it isn't a nostalgic bias. If I was 10 right now, I'd end up with nostalgia for the FRS in my 20s.

Everything is shit now, everything is great in retrospect. Shit has never changed. The majority of people have always wanted simple transportation with features that make it easier and less involved to drive. Bonus points for utility and showing off to your neighbors.

>>14054997
No casual driver in Germany gave a shit about those when I was there. They were a good purchase but they weren't some fire and soul shit. /o/ likes them because of the face and then justifies it further by realizing that, oh shit, a bland ass car can actually be fun and reliable too when you aren't comparing it to a fucking GTR!

It's literally a Toyota Corolla hatchback. so pretty damned reliable.
Here's a tip on the Matrix. if you want a Matrix, but don't want the "Toyota reliability" tax, get the Pontiac Vibe. Same car, different styling, no Toyota tax.
And the Matrix itself was American market only. The Vibe was actually sold in Japan as the Toyota Voltz.

par for the course.
For a sports car bargain, no one really wants the Nissan S12's (known in America as the 200SX). They're rare but goddamn they are cheap since no one wants them. They have no aftermarket support but you can cannibalize aftermarket support of the S13 and Z32 to actually make it halfway decent.

They don't have souls. You put your own soul into them, as if it were a device meant to become an extension of your body. The Japanese car and driver become one.

Whereas with European and the good American cars, it's like we are riders rather than drivers, alternating between commanding the car and taming it as to make it driveable.

Both makes have their own charm. Therefore, go fuck yourself.

I'm sorry br/o/, but I have to disagree. Stock Mk4 Supras are ugly, unlike the the Mk3s. And this is coming from someone who loves 90s Japanese sports bars of soap.

I have to say, this is one of the rare instances where I think a car looks much better without the wing. (Usually I'd say an even bigger one than stock is best to my eye, but not for this supra.) From the side profile it looks pretty good (paint a tad too brown), but the front (and especially the rear) fascia still bother me on this car.

Mine.

I know it's not as fast as others. Or as reliable. Or as practical. Or as comfortable. at the end of the day, it's a 3-door DERV with a bit of leather and dials written in Italian.

But, damn, I fucking love this thing.

A car with a soul is not always good. I have driven a TT z32 with bald rear tires before. That is a car that truly desires with all of its soul, to die and take you with it.

I wouldn't even dare to enter such a car.

Dear God, I fucking hate modern BMWs. They've become such over-priced, over-engineered pieces of shit. The E30 is GOAT.

Buick actually told gm to fuck off when they built the gn. I love how a grandpa car put correvettefags on suicide watch.
>>
>>14062649
Fun fact: they sell the 3.8 Lambda V6 as a crate engine. You could actually do that if you wanted.

Yeah I did that with the tires that were on the car when I bought it, gunned it around a turn at work and slid a lot more then I thought. Other then that though the Z32s handle very well.

It was like the last hurrah of that old school in house rivalry. They'd finally beaten Oldsmobile down like a battered housewife over the diesel engine fiasco and the failed turbo car (they adopted it too soon it was a good idea, the proof is in the Grand National) and Buick was all that was left of that good-natured internal competition that actually drove innovation within GM (the bean counters were by this point demonizing that as innovation costs money). The GN's were a fond tribute to a history that 80's GM wanted to divorce itself from. The Grand Nationals were Gran Sports tributes in all the right ways that GM at large was too afraid to embrace. They were the last roar of the dinosaurs.
