Why isn't RUF as well known these days?

Atleast in America.

>be me
>go to friends housewarming party
>be socially autistic
>only thing i've ever done with this friend has been hooning and working on cars
>probably because those two things and work just about make up my life
>everything goes rather well
>near end, decide to help clean up as i was the only sober one
>driving self home ftw
>getting ready to leave, classic circle of nicotine addicts outside the garage at 3.AM
>conversation steers into cars
>mention how much I'd like to have an RUF
>spend next 20 minutes explaining that RUF is -kind- of like something like Nismo in that they tune a specific brand of cars, but do it on a level that makes them deserve their own badge.
>draw blanks all around
>end up leaving feeling slightly disappointed

I mean, I get that they're pretty rare, but so is a boogawdee and everyone knows that from a mile away.
>>
Porsches these days are already pretty close to perfection from the factory. RUF is kinda pointless.
>>
you just answered your own question. most americans know nothing of foreign brands other than the common ones.
>>
I didn't know RUF was a thing until I played Assetto Corsa.

But that doesn't answer the question, and I'll disagree with you about RUF, as pretending something can't be made better is ridiculous.

>>14054061
But there's no other case I can think of a foreign car brands' performance branch being basically unknown.

>>14054064
Really?
>tfw went to europe when I was 12
>visited Florence
>went to a ferrari shop and dicked around, bought my sister a soccer ball
>walk outside
>there it is
>a porsche? no, it just looks like one
>what is it?
>I go closer, the engine starts
>i am spaghetti
>it drives off
>run to store man came out of
>eventually someone who speaks broken english tells me the car brand
>tfw love

Zero racing heritage that matters.
>>
>>14054064

Me too, kinda

I only know ruf exists because in every car game there's any type of porsche, it's a RUF and not an actual porsche, this happens in a lot of PGR games, Test drive, AC, and many more.

>It's because RUF is way cheaper to liscence for videogames, by the way

>>14054051
Not really.

you see, ruf doesn't actually try to perfect any car, but just make it more savage and powerful, as far as i know they do very little work to the car besides the engine.

see: yellowbird

I would say they're not known because they don't try to get known, their work speaks for itself.
>>
>>14054094
I thought Need For Speed (game franchise) had the exclusive licensing for Porsche, which is why RUF is used.
>>
>>14054103
basically. But the license is ending next year if i remember correctly.
>>
>>14054039
I don't think they were ever well known
its a much older company than most would appreciate
>>
>>14054129

they deserve the fucking recognition.

it is named after its founder

anyone else here want an RUF tuned porsche with rauh welt exterior and singer interior?
>>
>>14054039
Well probably because Nismo was a shit comparison. Nismo is an in-house department of Nissan, Ruf is essentially the German equivalent of Roush.
>>
>>14054156
>explaining things to non-carfags
>expecting them to get the differences between a tuning company like Nismo compared to something like Roush

the most i got across was it was -not- liberty walk.
>>
>>14054156
Ruf has Car Manufacturer status instead of an aftermarket tuner

What happened to Gemballa?
>>
>>14054039
>>14054085

this guy >>14054094 nailed it, i think. they don't waste money on marketing or advertisements because they aren't visually different from Porsches, and because their demographic already knows who they are. People without the knowledge of RUF will look at a Yellowbird and say "Tuner Porsche." Just the same, if you showed somebody a Nismo GT-R they'd say "Nissan, or if you showed someone an SRT Hellcat they'd say "Dodge."

I don't have anything to really compare it to.
All my carfag friends know I love RUFs and will happily go into debt for life if it means I can kill myself behind the wheel of one.

As I said in OP, I'm socially autistic, this was the first time I've talked about RUFs to a larger group of people that weren't somewhat on the level as far as car business goes.
>>
>>14054199
They found him dead in the desert.
>>
>>14054064
My 65 year old neighbor's son works for Porsche, and he is a member of the Porsche Owner's Club, himself owning two 911's. He didn't know what RUF was when I mentioned it in a conversation.
>>
>>14054277
I thought it was just a 936 with a body kit
>>
Ruf has always been and will always be niche. An extremely good niche, but a niche nonetheless.

>>14054094
>as far as i know they do very little work to the car besides the engine.

They do almost everything. They receive a Porsche shell, sometimes a block, if not directly from the subcontractor, and that's it. Everything else, they do in-house.
They have perfected the perfect Porsches.

They work on the engine, suspension, brakes, and chassis. Basically they are what tuners aught to be. I love me some RUF.

"Porsche was still offering only one version of the Boxster in '99, with a 2.5 litre, 200 horsepower (150 kW) flat-six as the only available powerplant. Ruf techs would remove the factory engine, replacing it with a lightly tuned version of Porsche's 3.4 litre, 310 horsepower (230 kW) flat-six from the early 996-generation 911.
In order to properly handle the new engine, structural modifications were made to the Boxster chassis, both to allow for the engine's physical mounting and to help make the platform more rigid, giving it better handling to go along with the added power output. Larger brakes, an Ruf-spec suspension system and new aerodynamics rounded out major changes, while larger Ruf wheels with more aggressive tires helped increase grip. Ruf badging and interior pieces were added for visual appeal."

First of all what Gran Turismo are we talking about? Because starting on the PS2 they went all traction control on you and it was largely impossible to spin out. Also it honestly ain't so bad, not compared to the Speed 12. I haven't won a single race in my life in the Speed 12.
>>
>>14054967
The reason it's called the Blackbird is because started life as a Ruf Yellowbird. Didn't seem right to call it Yellowbird when it was black.

>Porsche are pretty much perfect
No. They still don't offer flat eights, they don't offer the Cayman with an engine truly equivalent to the 911 (GT4 doesn't count, they gimped that with the rear end ratio), they don't offer a choice of PDK and manual on all cars, they don't offer a lot of 911 models without heavy AWD, they're taking ages to trickle the 918 hy rid tech down to the 911 and Cayman. They could be charging an arm amd a leg by stuffing the GT2 drivetrain into the 718 Cayman, calling it the 718 GT1. Hell, make a RWD only one, called the GT1 RS, and sell it for 100 grand more. It would sell like hot cakes.

>>14055082
They've sort of moved on.

Forza games get to use porsche now.

But then, that's because EA's got themselves better exclusive licence, star wars
>>
Anyone who doesn't know RUF or Alpina is either a fake carfag or a boomer.

Literally everyone ages 20-35 should know RUF via gran turismo 1
>>
>>14055082
Because they're dickheads who pissed away the opportunity to follow in porsche unleashed/2000s absolutely superb footsteps.

>>14054103
EA have the license but they can choose to allow others to use it.
Hence why the forza porsche shit is always DLC, it's because EA milk that shit for every cent and T10 are fucking jews
