Seriously considering buying an '83 for an actual medium amount of money before they go through the roof.

How much of a dog is the 4-speed?

What should I be specifically asking the owner before I travel 100 miles to see it?

What does it take to push the factory 5.0 up near 300hp?

Any specific gremlins in this car?

Yeah but in what order on a tight budget for what gains? I imagine I can rustle up a decent carb and slap it on pretty easy. I also will be bringing it from an emissions state into a non-emissions county so I could remove the cat real easy.

If you want an exact parts list, go on hotrod and car craft and look up some engine builds. or some build threads on a mustang forum, they'd be better suited to answering these questions than most of /o/

Wrong. Mustangs were making 210 in 85 and was the only American car to being making power at the time. Foxbody mustangs brought the US out of the Malaise era and forced other automakers to follow suit.

So instead I am going to get a 2.3 notchback (because these are the most common and go for the least) and drop a junkyard 5.0 in it. Another option would be dropping a motor from a turbo coupe, what do you guys think?
>>
>>14064704
If that engine isn't in the car yet, I'd suggest getting different valve covers. I've had a couple sets of those, and they both warped, cracked, and started leaking in a few months.

Most 2.3 -> 302 cars are haggard as hell

>I had one

I mean it was mostly sorta done right
>>
>>14065355
Haggard in what manner? As in usually not done correctly?
>>
>>14065444

Most 2.3 -> 302 cars will still have a bunch of 2.3 parts in them
>7.5" rear end
>2.3 Front springs so itll sag in the front
>half the gauges wont work

Mine was mostly right, had the right springs, an 8.8 rear, 5 lug conversion, rear disk brake conversion and a Z spec T5 BUT the car was a fucking tin can, the wiring was a bit of a mess. It was terrifyingly fun though

>>
>>14065485
Well there is a donor car I could possibly use for everything but the motor and transmission once I acquire a 2.3 notch. Getting a running 5.0 hatch/convertible for ~$1000-$1500 off of craigslist is also an option, but I think pulling an engine/trans out something from the junkyard and using the parts car that is available to me is a much more viable option.

Pulling a motor from an 87-88 t-bird turbo coupe is also an option, albeit a lot less viable.

I should also mention this is is the coupe in question.

>>14065596
2.3T swap would be easier overall, you wouldnt have to swap the crossmember or any of the front suspension, but you would still need an 8.8 (You could use the Tbird 8.8, they have disk brakes) but you'd basically have to get a different turbo because the stock IHI turbos are basically worthless
>>
>>14065706
No no, I mean as a donor. Are parts heavier or something? That way he gets SN95 suspension components and the 302/T5 combo.
>>
>>14065721

the SN-95 rear axles are wider, theres some shit you could do to make it work but still.

The SN-95 302s also had the same cam that went into the P headed 5.0 Explorers so they make less power than the 87-93 cars and they dont have forged pistons like the 86-92 HO cars

Supposedly it's built but I don't know when or with what parts.

Body has fresh paint on it and pretty close to a factory color. Completely debadged and it has a louvered Mustang lookin' hatch on it despite being an '83 but I find conflicting info online about the bubble so I don't know if it's factory or not.

I think I would have actually preferred the cracked original with the speaker holes busted out than that abomination.

It's interesting to note the 87-93 Mustang Sport seats from two different cars with the right one being trimmed in black and the left one all grey.

Not real thrilled about the color change and leaving the door jambs the original color

>>14068159

The water spray under the hood is funny. Still can't really make out shit but it looks like it's just chock full of the usual clueless/cheap owner shit like excess rubber hose/battery cable repair ends/cheap chrome shit/etc that both degrade reliability and appearance at the same time. This is great, Thanks. I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on it. Supposedly it has roller rockers and cams in there. Edelbrock, headers, flowmasters and so on but I'm waiting to see if he can produce the records for that work especially for the internals or I'd have no way of knowing. I also have no way of compression testing there in BFE if they're old or undocumented. Is it unreasonable to ask a seller to hold redline for 15 seconds?

The price is doable but I'm going to mainly put historical plates on it and tinker with it. Keep it for 10+ years as an investment but I don't want to get laughed at at the cruise ins or at the stoplights you know?

The body seems straight and I'd probably immediately take the plastidip to the parts that are supposed to be rubberized. He said there's a tiny rust hole in the passenger floorboard but him feeling the need to disclose that makes me feel like he's pretty ethical on that and gets underneath it too.
>>
>>14068440
>hold redline for 15 seconds
Yeeaahhh, that'd probably be a bit much to ask. With years of experience I can tell if an engine is sour just by listening to it on a drive. Usually at idle too. I your case I'd recommend either a pre-purchase inspection at a shop or at least an experienced friend going along with you.

>investment.
Naw, not with this one. Too much is modified/missing you'd never come out on top. You buy this one, it's just for fun and that's not a bad thing.

>rusty floorboard.
Floorboards are not structural component of unibody cars in that they don't add significant strength and are not part of the support girder so there's that. What is important on a Fox is the bottom of the strut towers and the top of the subframe rail at the bottom of the strut towers on the suspension side. Perforating rust here kills the Fox and it's common because the top of the subframe rail forms a shelf at the bottom of the strut tower and dirt builds up and keep the area wet. If you check no where else on the car be sure to look there. It's also a good idea to open the hatch and look between the hatch and the roof panel. Seen plenty of them rusted out there too from what I suspect is water intrusion from the 1/4 windows or sail trim panels.

That would be great but unfortunately neither is really an option... Unless he agrees to meet me in the nearest city at the Ford dealership. Is that where to take it? How much could I expect to pay for that? I'm sure there's no guarantee on it so how reliable is that really? If the rebuild has all the documentation and is relatively few miles ago is it safe to assume it's okay? I really like how clean this car is and the price including a built engine seems great (bordering 2g2bt) so I've got a conflict knot right now about riding 2 hours to see it and maybe not being critical ENOUGH then.
>>
>>14068598
>hours away
Well, that's gonna make it tough. Any self-respecting dealer should have a two to three day backlog of work so it'd be a drop-off situation at one of those and this car's really too old for them to know much more than the basics anyway. What you'd really need is a shop that has techs that are interested in domestic cars in order to get that little extra attention something like this would need but at the same time not be complete rednecks that think duct tape is a proper fix. A tough mix to come up with on short notice.

Well I played Monty Hall, gave the guy two different offers and he's going to take the redline challenge! So... what RPMs should I set for what duration and is it okay to just do it out of gear or is it important for it to have resistance? Not super worried about the rear end exploding.
>>
>>14069461
Turboing a 2.3 requires an infinite amount of more work than buying an svo or even swapping a 2.3T into a fox
>>
>>14069474
Well if you blow up his rear end checking it out you're going to have to buy it any ways and at his asking price
>>
>>14069928
...I asked if it was important to have the transmission engaged while redlining to see if it blows. He's the one who's going to be redlining it and if I DO need to have it going then he's the one who's going to be driving it and if it blows I sure as hell ain't buying it.

But like I said if the engine holding at redline out of gear is enough then I'd rather be standing there looking at it doing it anyway but I'd really like to know if that's good enough.

Define "well". An experienced driver can wrestle them around a track especially with modern suspension upgrades.
>>
>>14069474
>what RPMs should I set for what duration
I'd prefer to see it perform under load myself so I'd have him run it through the gears up to the top of Third. It should pull relatively cleanly while doing it. Top RPM will be dependent on cam installed but I would expect it to go up to 5500-6000 or so without drama. As one of those things that come with experience, the sound of the engine at higher rpm can tell you some things. Such as if it develops a raspy note and stops pulling as hard at about 4500 then that would suggest valve springs are weak. While if it stops pulling but the note doesn't change it could be a fuel delivery issue. So much stuff like that it's not even funny

So I'm building a budget fox body hoon/drift/trackday/autocross/hill climb/rally car. It's stripped down to the bare shell, the cage done plus an ass load of seam welding, I got a tubular K member+arms and koni yellow coilovers for the front. Rear is cobra irs, 28 spline diff. Front brakes are standard 96 to 04 gt's. Rears are Lincoln mark 8 (better then normal gt brakes and I had them already). The motor i got is a chevy 5.3 (l33) ls9 cam, carb intake, and front mount distributor.

The question is what transmission to use. I've been building the car on a super tight budget. Camaro t5's are hard to come by around here and I'm not to keen on the strength. I haven't seen a $1000 t56 in years. Best idea I can come up with is an old super t10 or muncie 4speed.

You have a bulge scoop from an earlier Capri. They only used that scoop for Capri's and switched to a scoop like mine and here>>14068598 in 83. I would take care of that hood because they are super expensive and desirable among Capri guys. I would check the studs where they are attached to the scoop and make sure they are solid, if not use some epoxy to fix them. Also check to see if all the studs are even mounted, 83+ Capri's came with 6 mounts on the hood while 82- came with 8. Guy's will also use 3m double sided tape on the back, if you take the scoop off you will see some flat spots where you can put tape.

Advice is to buy a 5.0

Nothing wrong with a carb on a track car. Much simpler, cheeper, less wiring, easier to diagnose problems. Just ad a wide band o2 gauge for simple tuning.

Back in the 90's I got roped into helping somebody replace a bubble hatch with a regular one and while it bolted on just fine the issue was the latch mechanism. Specifically the striker was different styles. The car had a thin loop style striker while the hatch was made for the style that was a single thick bolt like the doors use. I don't remember exactly what we did but I do know that it wasn't pretty due to time constraints. Be interesting to see what they did with yours.

I've already climbed in the back. It's just like you said, loop on the car big claw on the hatch. The key won't even turn in the lock though.

Very nice mang, does the Mach 1 chin spoiler fit nice on the GT front bumper? only seen them on LX's
>>
>>14077440
So they couldn't figure it either.

After thinking about it a while I remember that we cut the shit out of the hatch to fit the loop style latch mechanism. It wasn't pretty and would be even more embarrassing now than it was then. Given more time I would grab the striker bolt set up from a donor car and get that welded in. It's the only real way to do it. Have vaguely wondered about doing a powered pull-down like the Third Gens have but haven't really looked into it

Oh and the lock cylinder is from whatever car donated the hatch while the key you have is from the Capri and they didn't swap the lock cylinders.

Nope. 4 on the floor. It made some interesting sounds at highway speed on the way home and I'm sure it would have gotten even better MPGs if it had a 5th to shift into.

Apparently the 5 speed will bolt right up as long as you have the bell housing, all you have to do is grind the shifter hole to be a little bit bigger. If I make any mechanical upgrades that'll be the first one.

As it is first gear is like a truck. I don't even know if I need it.
>>
>>14077565
Nah it has three keys. I'm going to WD40 the shit out of it and just crank the one that doesn't fit the doors or the ignition. It's possible the guy just glued it with that 20-foot paint job he sprayed on there. He said he had it open last month though.
>>
>>14077580
It will bolt up on the crossmember and driveshaft is the same but remember you need a flywheel, bellhousing, manual pedals, cable, clutch and pressure plate before it runs.
>>
>>14077708
It's already a 4-speed

Should I plastidip it from the belt line down to look like this one? If I change my mind later I wonder if plastidip will peel off that amateur paint.
