How was the 3000GT VR4 compared to the competition?
>>
idk but I know a guy who has a vr4 galant and its basically the best daily ever made..minus the fact that its a temperamental engine/car/everything
>>
>>14046325
It was more beautiful.
>>
When they came out they were one of the most technologically advanced cars ever made. And reviewers were all about it.

All wheel drive
4 wheel steering
Active aero
ABS
Adjustable exhaust tone
Twin turbo twin intercooler dohc 24v

It was the shit.

Awesome in concept, flawed in execution.

Electronics that shit themselves and transverse AWD.
>>
>>14046361
The funny is thing is none of those systems are complex. They're all practically agricultural.
>>
>>14046381
>Electronics that shit themselves and transverse AWD.
Nigga the electronics are fine. Transverse engine mounting isn't much of an issue and it centralizes mass well.

It was pretty whiz bang in 1990.
I have an old motor trend pitting it against a bunch of cars.
Fd was fastest and the laser rs turbo won because cheap.
>>
>>14046418
>It was pretty whiz bang in 1990.
It really wasn't. The active aerodynamics are simple motors attached to movable bodywork, the 4WS is just another power steering rack in the rear, and the 4WD was a simple full time system that used the Super Select 4WD software.
>>
>>14046325
perfect car to swap an LS1 into
>>
>>14046429
And how many production cars had all of those in 1990? I was 8 and remember people were pretty blown away by all the gadgets. I still have all of my dad's old car mags and could dig out a review or two from the launch. I don't have a scanner though so would have to photo or transcribe.
>>
>>14046481
>And how many production cars had all of those in 1990?
That has nothing to do with the designs of the features being simplistic.
>>
>>14046507
simplistic to the 2015 eye

back in 1990 this shit was amazing
>>
>>14046507
I didn't say it wasn't simple, it was still advanced for its day. It was cool as shit when my dad's boss bought one and let me play with the exhaust which I remember being on the console? And rev it up in the parking lot. It was dark green and the coolest shit I had ever seen.

You know what else is simple now? Sr71 blackbirds. Still cool though

Sure the concepts were advanced. Yes they had active exhaust. No one is saying it isn't cool. I think it's cool that the features are designed very simply.

I find it hard to believe a pigfat 300zx turbo under-steered a similar amount as the 911 turbo. And also manged to lose in the slalom.

What shitter was driving these cars?

>>14046761
4WS nigga

Honestly, I don't quite understand why its not used today. It was a bit tempermental, but the performance benefits were undeniable
>>
>>14046775
scratch that, i looked it up and there are quite a bit of modern cars with some form of 4ws

>It was pretty whiz bang in 1990.
Hell yeah, most of the cars I was driving in 1990 still had drum brakes on the rear, maybe disks on the front, solid rear end and where SOHC, pushrod or OHV type engines

Then this shit comes out with active suspension, aws, active aero, 4 wheel disks, wishbone suspension, adjustable sports exhaust, twin turbos and awd.
Some of those things where a first for the car which technically made it the most advanced GT/sports car of its type in 1990, they where literally a 'technical show piece' so to speak for the company as the GTR's, 300zxs, NSX's and Supra's started coming out as well that showcased what those companies could do.

Course, 25years or so later, none of it looks exactly remarkable but for the time it was actually revolutionary and put the wind up a lot of the european and other manufacturers. When Dave Wolin Racing and Team Mitsubishi set first place at Pikes Peak and knocked a full minute off the record, it'd set a few standards there too. Actual GT racing in Japan wasn't the most consistent, but they where going up against arguably one of the greatest GT race cars of the early 90's with the R32 GTR that smoked pretty much everyone.

If recollection serves, it was criticised a bit for being rather distant steering-wise, and a fair bit bigger than it really needed to be (though that might just be a European thing), but being rather well liked beyond that.

I think I remember it narrowly losing some twin test to an FD RX7.

I don't get it.

Are they trying to rip off Pontiac?
>>
Personally I think the Z32 is better, was originally going to buy a VR4 because they looked awesome until I saw the Z then I started reading reviews and the choice was obvious.
>>
>>14052074
>Personally I think the Z32 is better
You would be wrong.
>>
>>14049094
sell your car, then buy that car? not that hard, idk fuck off
>>
>>14052110
I think they look better and I have met people with both and the 3000GT guys are always having problems with their cars (even more then the Z guys). You know they are bad when Z specialists dont even like working on them. I have also heard the 3000GT aftermarket is not as good as the Zs.
>>
>>14046325
More unreliable. Fd was the only thing less reliable
>>
>>14052155
>the 3000GT guys are always having problems with their cars
Poor people are the reason for this.
>>
>>14052185
Part of it true but they all complained of electrical gremlins which I understand is a common complaint on that car. Not saying I would never own one but if I had to pick one I would choose the Z.
>>
>>14052253
>electrical gremlins which I understand is a common complaint on that car.
Again, poor people who can't maintain things and poor people trying to modify them.
>>
>>14046332
and thus the legacy sport sedan
>>
>>14052434
VR4 has known electrical problems regardless. The capacitors they used on the ecu fail after about 20 years and need to be repaired.
>>
>>14052516
They don't and even if that was true, so what? Replacing caps is easy.
>>
>>14052516
Mate I've had 20y/o Nissans that shit their caps after 15-20 years, it happens.

It was FAR from THE MOST technologically advanced car. It just had a bunch of dumb shit on it that made the VR 4 weigh around 4k lbs.

LOL okay

No awd
No active aero
No variable exhaust

Skyline would be more comparable.
