Wankel thread?

Did anyone here have an RX7 as one of their earliest cars/ their first car even?
Considering an NA FC but I'm curious if it's just too hard
I know the basics of rotary maintenance and how they work, but maybe it's just a thing where I need more experience with cars in general.
>>
>>14044554
I'm in the same boat, except with a gen 2 RX8.
>>
If you are willing to put in the work and know how to google just go for it imo.

Life is short.
>>
>>14044554
i want one eventually

a second or third gen to use it more as a toy car/ garage queen

fucking moron
>>

also, anyone if you can fit a rotary to a transverse transmission?
>>
literally no problems as long as you can refrain from limiter bashing when cold and know how to change oil every 3k miles
>>
>>14044793
>no rotary motorcycle
but there are
also rotary is pretty dependent on it's mid engine lay out
>>

I had one as my first car at 16 years old. AMA

yes but i cant afford one
>>

how did you handle that MPG?
how do i into premix
what oil did you use
how bad was insurance
how much did your parents hate you
>>

>how did you handle that MPG?
I had a job.
>how do i into premix
I didn't and went over 200k miles but there are tons of guides that tell you how mucg

Castrol 10w40 !!!NOT synthetic!!!
>how much did your parents hate you
Wasn't a big deal

Mr2 turbo at 18
>>
>>14044960
Once per drive. I beat the ever living shit out of mine.
Just take it to redline. It's that easy. You'll never feel a smoother redline in any other engine.
>>
>>14044893
Depends. The all rx7s need rebuilds at x mileage is a meme. If he took care of it your good for a long time. If not I would rebuild now just incase. If you blow up the engine the rebuild could be expensive, if not it will be pretty cheap. If you dont want to rebuild you will probably be okay, just plan on doing it once it gets to 120k to 160k or so. They will run for longer but again you dont know how the previous guy treated it.
>>
>>14044960
As much as you want as long as you warm up it.
>>
Anyone here have an EFR turbo?
>>
>>14044554
RX8 was my first car

It's been no more or less reliable than any other ten year old car. Just keep an eye on it and it'll be happy.

They're reliable, but they don't tolerate being in a poor state of tune well.

It offers something different and interesting in return.
>>
>>14045008
Anything you would've liked to known prior to purchase/maintenance?
>>
>>14044960
When people say redline they don't mean you go 100mph in traffic anon, just redline it in a lower gear, the rx7 loves it

I'd argue NA FC or FB are perfect cars for the burgeoning enthusiast

Maybe. Hard to tell with black wheels.
But damn I love that color
>>
>>14045212
The wheels tell me it may not be out of stance but can never be sure
How hard would it be to return to stock height?

I don't think there's any space in that wheel well
This is the best rx7 I found God damn it
>>
>>14045157
That I couldn't really afford the petrol bill. It really does guzzle if you drive in traffic, and can be very sensitive to fuel quality. We've shit petrol in Ireland.

Maintenance was, it's all out there on the web.
I've replaced the ignition coils with D585's, along with a dwell remap to match. It's the best upgrade you can make to one.
I run premix, but lately it's been getting finnicky on it.
Catalytic converter was removed, which is a great reliability mod.
Otherise it's standard.

Anyone ever hear of the LiquidPiston X engine? They claim to have much higher efficiency than everything else out there. Its not a Wankel, but it is rotary.

Is this bullshit or legit? Pic is supposedly a 40hp diesel X engine next to some 35hp conventional diesel block.

These are sweet but I highly doubt it'll go into a car.

Well they landed a DARPA contract earlier this year

They have said in the past that they were looking at outdoor equipment and generators, but I guess DARPA is exploring their potential use for military vehicles and shit.
>>
>>14045390
The way the intake and exhaust work. Would need some re-engineering

the liquid piston thing looks real neat.

shame they are not for sale to the public.
>>

From what I read a while ago the technology is more aimed at industrial use not so much cars and planes and what not. cant remember why, but something like the best gains are seen when used in those kind of low power high torque constant running industrial setups. not for high hp types of applications.

i could be completely misremembering though

Love my FD, would not want one as a daily driver though.

I had an FC as my first car. Drove it for 11 years, and still daily drive rotaries. I want to go back in time and slap my high school self in the face for even considering FWD cars.

Sold the RX-7 for $1600 less than I bought it for in 2003.

It was a great experience.

On eBay.
Rx7 FC OEM springs.
Or just get tanabe gf210 springs.
They lower like a half inch and are a bit stiffer.
Looks nice and rides nice. Here's a pic of when I had them on mine
>>
>>14047211
I had a long conversation with the guy about that car.

I would be suspect of the car, mostly because the owner didn't seem to know much about rotaries or of the vehicle history.
I had some extra photos on my phone, but have since deleted them. Rust looked hard to tell whether it was just superficial or not, and thin 80's jap steel can rot quick if you don't nip it in the bud.

I know it's a bad idea but my want is real for pic related. He wants $999 for it. He says it had new apex seals recently installed and it currently sits at 71,000 miles.

Cons: it has a crack in the windshield and a bearing in the back is going out.
>>
>>14048869
I would say sit back and look for one in better condition. You'll pay more for it initially but it'll be cheaper in the long run. Unless of course you want to spend time and money fixing it up, in which case go ahead.

Check the undercarriage on a lift for signs of bottoming out or heavily worn suspension

"1986 Mazda rx 7 with 88,xxx original miles on it. Car is in very very good condition and runs great. The original owner of the car removed the ac/power steering and also had a full rats nest and emissions removed from the car. It is all original except for lowering springs and exhaust. The interior has turbo2 leather seats and a racing steering wheel. Everything thing in the car works and is in very good condition for its age. The car was repainted about 3yrs ago and looks great, hood was replaced with a turbo2 hood. Maybe be willing to trade let know what you have if not im open to offer but i am not in any hurry to sell it. 2800obo Txt or call me with any questions "
>>
>>14044554
If you are going FC you need the turbo version, unmolested.

NA rotaries are shit. Not because of maintenance, but because of the lack of torque. And you will still get bad fuel economy and the maintenance requirements of a sports level engine with none of the benefits.

The Renesis isn't terrible, but finding an RX8 without nigger wheels is tough to find. And there are ZERO aftermarket performance for it other than Racing Beat and Mazda Trix, both of which just slap a 200% mark up on modified OEM parts.

Exhaust alone on a rotary can net you up to 30 hp with a de-cat

Boost is the only way for big builds, but the n/a rotary isn't anemic with a little love

>>
>>14053316
Removing a cat will add power even with stock parts. That is just silly.

>>14053340
If you want power from an RX8, get custom work done. The over-the-counter shit won't get you anywhere.

Burn's stainless headers, and a custom exhaust and cat (if you plan on keeping it registerable) will help you lose a ton of weight and you should gain decent power. At the very least the weight loss is what you want anyway.
