I'm looking for a SUV (or pickup) to call my adventuremobile. It needs to be manual transmission, and very spacey, as I'm 6'2 and hate driving in tiny cars. I'll also probably be removing all of the back seats and renovating the back of the vehicle into a little sleeping area with a mattress, heater and all. Something you would normally do in a van, except vans kinda suck.

I'm currently looking at the Subaru Forester but I'd like to get some recommendations from you all.

Too bad you think vans are gay, Mitsubishi Delica is perfect for you.

Foresters aren't amaxing offroad but I can attest to their room inside at 6'3" myself. The n/a ones are gutless as fuck though.

Unfortunately, I don't think those are legal in the U.S.

I'm actually not in any financial turmoil, I just like driving around, traveling and camping. Sorry if you have trouble processing that.
>>
I would say a second gen CRV or Element
>>
>>14031641
Neither of those hold a candle to Subaru AWD in rougher conditions.
>>
>>14031644
Fine then, an older Pathfinder

Jeep XJ.

>>14031599
L400 Delicas aren't legal in the US and he doesn't need a 4WD van.

Id say get a van as you will have much more space and the ability to stand up and move around, search for van dwelling conversion and you can see what can be achieved

As the owner of one, I'll plug the 3rd gen (96-02) Toyota 4runner. Available with a manual for most of its production run, decent enough interior space, excellent offroad capability and durability, and not atrocious fuel economy. Very reliable, and there is fantastic support to address the few issues that do exist. Parts are cheap and everywhere, and these are easy to work on. The problem is that people with 5spd 4runners want an arm and a leg for them. Oh they had an available locking rear diff which is an excellent thing to have in reserve when offroad.

>Subaru
>rougher conditions

Lol this old meme. Subarus are mallcrawlers you idiot, nothing more. They have the same ground clearance as a fucking CRV and will get high-ended on anything you might try to "adventure" over.

Stop adhering to the stupid 90's Crocodile Dundee marketing shills. Start paying more attention to the new, family-friendly Subaru marketing shills. They're actually being honest with you, telling you the car is meant to ferry around toddlers and tweens, then hand it off to them as a farty, boring, non-dangerous fagwagon.

I have that same Subaru that thing is a god damn trooper and quick for a 4 cylinder

A few cheaper/overlooked options:

Isuzu Trooper: taller body is roomier for sleeping in the back of. Very sturdy, capable trucks aside from automatic transmissions, later models tend to burn a lot of oil. Available with a manual.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport: can be found with a 5spd in earlier models. This is very similar size/shape/spec to a 3rd gen 4Runner. Super beefy rear axle, sturdy capable trucks. Suffer from a smattering of minor issues but are generally reliable if taken care of.

OP here, appreciate the recommendation but the back of that car is too small for what I'm looking for.

I don't think this guy is looking to go off road, dude.

Wow bud, sorry to trigger your /out/ism with a photo from a quick weekend trip in central Indiana with the gf.

How about the Altai mountains in Siberia, near the border of Mongolia?

I am.
>>

Is it the type of off road the Subaru Forester could actually do?
>>
>>14031908

How does an element have less space than a forester? On what planet?

Forrester is gud. Manual is a gud idea. Will not tow a 8x9 box trailer across America without a fight.

Aktru glacier. It was a really cool trip, really out of the way though, in a corner of Siberia where Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and China all come together, it's a 10 hour drive on 2 lane roads through the mountains from the nearest big Russian city, Biysk.

No arguments here bud, I buy a new tracksuit every time I go there at the bazaar. Everyone wears them, the stereotype exists for a reason.

Back on topic, here's a under-the-radar choice, a Suzuki XL7. More capable than a forester, available with a stick shift, my brother's gets up to 25 in the summer in back road driving.

>trying to find parts for this thing
>in North America

Yeah have fun with that.

inb4 it's really not that hard yes it is they don't even sell Suzukis in America anymore it's going to be a nightmare to find parts for an OLD one
>>
>>14032090
You're an idiot, it actually sold well when it was sold here in the states
>>
>>14032090
It's not a domestic or Toyota, but just about everything is on RockAuto and for reasonable prices. There's even a surprising amount of aftermarket stuff, lots of people wheel the short wheelbase trackers and sidekicks that these evolved from.
