Will boxy cars ever make a comeback?

I was pretty close to getting one in the late 90s.
Really wish I did since I suddenly want one again
>>14030132

>>14029804
Boxes aren't aerodynamic.
>>14030132
I thought you didn't like German cars?
>>14029825
please be a shoop
>>14030175
I don't mind them, but the Quattro and 928 have a special palce in my heart.
I could have had a 2002 tii but that was way too fucked and I was like 16 back then
I just don't like VWs.
>>14030190
I remember you saying you were just never really into them. Maybe that was BMWs.
Anyway carry on. How's China btw?
>>14030201
Not a big fan of BMWs but i'd have some of the older ones.
I want to invest in some sort of business while i'm here, maybe car related but i'm not sure what.
>>14030211
If you can find someone who can make low volume (<100) units in less well catered for performance parts that would be nice.
Hand made parts like carbonfiber stuff.
Someone who has engineering/automotive knowledge so can design shit themselves.
>>14030211
Something to do with EVs.
>>14030247
>>14030271
I've thought of maybe doing parts for VH/VKs, and that's alot of R&D. Did meet a guy in Shanghai that does carbon fiber parts for MX5s, uses his own car for development. Pretty neat.
I don't really know what I could do with Evs
>>14030309
Sell em or maintenance or charging stations, armoured vehicles might be good too, loads of wealthy chinamen.
I like the exterior design of the Flex. Also,
>twin turbo V6

cheap, light standalone ecu on running on android or something.
>>14029811
I think the MX-5 ND is aesthetically pleasing
>>14029804
No. We live in an era of over stylized angry, angular cars with oversized grilles and undersized windows.
>>14030353
There's plenty of that here already.
>>14030377
I found about one last month, and i've been trying to find out what the fuck it was. It looked megasquirt based or similar.
There are alot of cheap flash tuners available but nothing like a standalone yett

No the reason boxy cars are not a thing are becuase of pedestrian safety standards.
>>14031509
is that yours?
>>14031509
same aerodynamics as pic related while being 1000x uglier

Fuck off back to your Tesla thread.
>>14031509
That was my first car. Fast as fuck.
>>14029804
I can guarantee you in 20 years or less (possibly even less than 5 years), boxy cars will return as low volume production cars.
>>14032408
looks about right, desu
>>14031477
>>14031527
Except the Mercedes W124 had a drag coefficient of about .30 (some models being as low as .28) which is lower than:
-Lamborghini Diablo (.31)
-Pagani Huayra (.31)
-Chrysler 300C (.32)
-2015 Lexus RX450h (.33)
For others see the wiki for automobile drag coefficient.
I think it has more to do with everything having to be angry nowdays.
Fucking sucks, but I think they maybe will return someday. Maybe not as boxy and probably we'll never see sealed beam headlights again, but I feel like it'll come back in some way. Look at cars from the 40's and 50's. The swoops came back, just in a different way. I think we'll see angular design again in another 20 years maybe, then another 10 or so after that the return of the simple, clean, no bullshit look to cars, but again, in a different way. We'll never see Ford's New Edge styling again but maybe something similar using modern elements and materials.
>>14034494
I think with Driverless Cars coming, you'll see more regulations that are friendly to small volume production manufacturers, and you'll see all sorts of car styles return.
I'm betting many will be replicas. but some may be new cars altogether.
>>14031527
>becuase of pedestrian safety standards.
Dude, that's a meme. You can easily make pedestrian safe boxy shapes with modern composite materials (and I doubt that's even necessary). The reason boxy isn't a thing is because your average pleb wants something that looks "modern" and shiny. The bigger the better, which is why SUVs are so popular.
No, unless 80s retro turns into mainstream, boxy isn't coming back on cars. Or the computer industry with their monolithic slabs of tablets, laptops and stuff can make the car industry follow suit.
Cars are designed in a way that they are sold in large enough numbers (except the retarded stuff, like the Juke).
>>14034494
>sealed beam headlights again,
Who the fuck misses sealed beam headlights?
The back when I had my E23 I trashed those fuckers and Hella H4 conversion lenses.
>>14035489
Even with composites I really dont see how you could make boxy shapes safe for pedestrians, sharp(ish) edges are still going to hurt more than a bubble or soap shaped car.
Unless you make body parts deform significantly, and that might affect collisions at higher speeds.
Still regardless its stupid as fuck to be designing cars to save jaywalkers.
>>14035489
>>14035522
I have never understood the pedestrian safety claim. Getting hit by a car is going to fuck you up from the sheer force and speed of the impact (especially >30mph), it doesn't matter if the car is pointy or not.
>>14031647
This a best box, my dad had one long ago, literally pic related, we used to take ski trips and it was so good
>>14035522
>Even with composites I really dont see how you could make boxy shapes safe for pedestrians, sharp(ish) edges are still going to hurt more than a bubble or soap shaped car.
A soft edge is a shitload nicer than a hard curve.
Also, this >>14035608, as there's enough boxy cars out there that are new designs that show that safety laws don't prohibit you from making boxy cars (there's vans and there's the nissan cube and that ford SUV posted here). Popup lights may fall under the "no pointy protrusions" clauses, but boxy shape definitely doesn't.
>>14035608
of course it matters force/area=pressure and that ruins your day
that said, look at shit like the merc GL or dodge challenger and you can see that some amount of non bubbly styling is possible and still be legal, it's just a matter of disguising it well.
>>14030107
The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be...
>>14035522
>Who the fuck misses sealed beam headlights?
I don't think anyone really does, I think they look cool on trucks etc but I didn't say I was missing them or that their demise will be bad.
>>14036290
why dont people want to import these (to the usa) instead of skylines?
>>14033845
lol no they are not
No, safety means big cars and big cars have to be as aero conscious as possible due to stiff fuel economy laws
which means nothing but le sharp bar of soap cars for the next 50 years.
>>14036300
Because it wasn't featured on F&F
>>14031509
I'll show you wedge, nigga
