Rates are depressed, but so are fuel prices. Midwest usually doesn't see a severe impact from pacific weather patterns. Most of the country is about 2 months overdue for any snow accumulation, with pretty much nothing coming in the next 10 days.

Tell them you need a Kenworth. Or at least a newer Freightliner. You must be a veteran driver by Swift standards. It's gotta be like Pepsi standards where over 6months is basically a vet.

>tfw 65% turnover by one year
At the meeting yesterday, the big boss at our location actually said that 65% turnover is the best in South Florida of the 3 plants and one of the best out of the Southeast US. What the fuck.

Yeah the accident in the first 90 days does kill off a handful of good people. But that would probably move it from 65% turnover to 50%. Maybe a little more. Most people quit because it is just too hard.

On another note, there's dudes drag racing RC cars right by my fishin' hole. They have the lights and timing and everything. Dude says more people are coming by later. I should stay and try to gamble on it.

And the fishin was good. My first lake, I was there for 45min and got 5 bluegill, two smaller largemouth bass, and a decent peacock bass. Then went around the corner to this other pond and got a decent largemouth.

Hard luck, short of it being set on fire I'll bet it'll be the last truck you drive with swift sadly.

>starts snowing, nice sticky snow can keep a reasonable speed without loosing traction or chains.
>every faggot in front of me either pulls over or slowes to 10 mph
If you just went like 5 mph faster you'd have traction and stop doing durrriftos...
Oh well I'm at where I was going. Not sure if I'll be leaving now..
>>
Just got pulled over. No trailer lights. Brake lights and flashers work.

Just a fuse I'm sure. Unfortunately cascadias have 3 fuse boxes and none of them are labeled. Currently pulling and checking every fuse in pouring rain.

Freightliner had a recall on the trailer light receptacles a few months back

Specifically Cascadias, rain would leak into the receptacle and cause the lights to go out. Also would cause the everything inside the plug to rust and the trailer lights would flicker.

>>14032671

Most big fleets like Cascadias

I assume it's because they're cheap and more reliable than Internationals? fuck idk, dad always told me Freightliners owned fleet markets due solely to price.
>>
>>14032775
Not quite sure. How can you check where it was built?
>>
>>14032792

Should have a "built in Cleveland NC UAW Local 3520" sticker on the driver side door glass. I can't remember when those stickers started getting put on though, otherwise I am not too sure, but maybe there is a MFG sticker on the inside of the driver side door?
>>
>>14032732
Probably the shittiest truck I've ever driven in terms of build quality (only drove peterbilts and kws before it). Parts availability is off the charts, though.

>>14032740
Are you OTR?

>>14032749
Parts availability.

>>14032775
It used to be sale price, but now it's parts availability. Go to any TA or Petro and they keep pretty much a whole truck's worth of spare parts upstairs, and they're open 24/7. Crack a radiator tank on a Kenworth at 7pm on a Friday? If you're in the wrong part of the country you're shit out of luck until Monday morning. Do the same in a Columbia and if you can limp it into a TA or Petro you're rolling by midnight for under $1500.
>>
>>14032808
Door jam stickers and the sticker below the dash fuse box should all list manufacture location. My Columbia was made in Portland, OR.
>>
>>14032839

>>14032982

I don't care for the Detroit autos, but the truck is a decently comfy ride.

Can't speak for the mexicans but I think our build quality is usually pretty good. Everything is a much easier fit in the Cascadia than the other trucks we build, so it usually looks pretty good.

Yeah but they make a short hood version of the Cascadia, bet it's real fun trying to stuff an engine in there.
>>
>>14033546

Now that Central is fully absorbed into Swift, are they going to keep making reefer trailers with the Central livery? Wouldn't it make sense to simply get rid of all the Central equipment altogether?
>>
>>14032671

I'm gonna shoot F2F an email and see how much experience they require and if they have any flatbeds for rent. I'm about to hit my 2 year driving mark and March will be 6 months of flatbed, not sure if thats enough for F2F. It sounds like the income potential is higher at F2F but Mercer just sounds kinda easy mode as far as booking freight and also has a 550 a month walk-away trailer lease I was gonna treat as a rental until I buy my own trailer. I suppose I have enough cash to buy truck and trailer outright but I wanted to keep a really big safety net while I'm still new to being an O/O and also rolling in a million mile truck that might need major work done who knows when.

>>14034163
No, probably not. I can probably do an inframe on the Detroit s60 for like $10k, it would probably be the first thing I save up for. Then I'd open up these slanty chinamen eyeballs of mine and try to find all the really old worn out bits and pieces and replace them and probably redo some of the wiring, sure some headaches but less headaches than a newer truck and hell of a lot cheaper and also the ability to still use paper logs come the mandate.

>lolvos
Sure, theyre not perfect, but what matters most is the engine and tranny below, and I'll be satisfied with a Detroit s60 and 13 speed. The box and coachwork sitting above those doesnt make the money, but it sure makes it comfortable

I enjoy driving for the most part. I think it would get boring if I was local or doing the same route over and over again. How long will that whole training thing take? Like total time until you are making that 41¢/mi? If you do a private school, you could get your license in a month. Just don't get stuck training and stuff with Prime for 6mos before you ever get on your own truck.

If you think you won't hate it, just let them train you. But not everybody is cut out for OTR, and that's when you get screwed and have to pay back $4000+ if you quit before the year mark.
>>
>>14037884

its a one week orientation where you get your cdl, then 1 month training in the truck.

can you make even close to ~1200 a week starting off local as a new cdl holder though? I wouldn't mind doing some physical labor if its worth it, but i also live in a traffic filled shithole that is LA

I've been observing and keeping track of trucks while doing long trips, seeing how much further ahead of them I can get, how much progress is actually made by doing 120 km/h as opposed to 105 or 110. The answer really is not very much, maybe a few minutes ahead, but most of the time they will catch up to you at brake checks or when you stop for fuel.

There's something to be said for lolly gagging and that really slowing you down, like driving TOO defensively, but if I'm going really fast and trying to "beat that guy" I just end up getting disappointed when I see him again. I also use more fuel, and get speeding tickets. For some reason everyone on the road is an opponent that I must beat.

I make ~$1000/wk before taxes. It gets busier in the summer, so it can be closer to $1200 some weeks, and when it gets slower in the winter it will ~$900.

And $1200/wk as a company driver starting out is a little optimistic. Ask Whiney-Kun about that one. Your dispatcher has to really like you to consistently make $1200/wk.
>>
>>14038939

idk, it's part of the contract but they could pull a bait and switch. All the forums I read recommends them unless you can find a local small company that treats you well as a new driver.

I did some reading on pepsi and for only 1k before taxes that sounds like a lot of work. I don't think anyone in any career field should be working 60 hours a week breaking their back just for a 150 bucks a day after taxes..
>>
>>14039052
60hrs is a lot. I might do a little over 50 when it is busy during the summer and that is for an $1100 check. Closer to 45hrs a week right now.

I'm just saying lots of newer company OTR drivers are making closer to $40k. You could do that with an easy route at a beer distributor and go home to your own bed every night. Local will be hard work to start though. So weigh your options and debate how much you like your own bed.

I suppose I should clarify, he was in full panic mode he had gotten a Jack out and was attempting to lift the crossbeam on the legs so he could crank the legs a bit more. He didn't even check to see what gear the crank was in so when I rolled up and stuck my back end under to help lift he crawled under to 're adjust the Jack I popped it into low and went to town, once I raised it off his tire he ran over to free his rig. I popped it into high then cranked another inch out of it when security showed up and asked us nicely to stop faffing around. I pulled away and watched him trying to move the crank in vain. It was a little worrisome as he seemed better built than me.

And then we talked about lines and florcorbans and canal fishing. Good to hear you had good fishing trip.

I scored some fishing gear. Two poles and tackle boxes. Came with my first catfish rod. 8ft medium thick shaft and im spooling with 80lb braid then 15lb-20lb fluorocarbon.

Also a 5-4/5-6 telescopic rod. medium light. Perfect for small game like blue gill and creek trout. Need to find a reel with very good drag because I'm spooling with 4lb and 2lb lead. Is trout season so just perfect.

Show us some pics of r/c drag racing. Shits cray lol

3800 lbs + 2200 empty uhaul trailer weight = 6000 lbs
Most basic half-ton pickups built in the past 20 years or so are rated to tow at least that (around 7000, usually), and even a handful of the larger compact pickups are rated for 6000 lbs towing (colorado & frontier, possibly others). Most of the mid-size SUV's top out around 5000 lbs towing, but plenty of people overload them without the sky falling.

Some bullshit Swift does I guess. Not even sure how it works, I told the guy who was approving me for reoptimization that I was at a Love's where the fuel was cheaper, but he could only approve for refuel at Petro down the block with slightly more expensive fuel.
>>
>>14042287

Swift fag L/O here.

Whiney, it's because swift uses "fuel routing" which is basically supposed to get them the best routing between price and ifta in their system.

They only fuel at T/A-Petro and Loves because they all have backdoor 20-30 cent rebates per gallon with comdata.

Pilot/flying j have beef with comdata and so they don't get any discount besides 6 off at the pump for "cash price".

Meanwhile, you as the driver take it in the ass on points because t/a - Petros point system is a joke. P/FJ gives us 10x the points on their cards for fueling there and I only fuel there because swift doesn't pass the comdata rebate on to O/Os from t/a and loves.
At any given time, I have a shower a day on my card and 300 bucks worth of points (30,000)

In case no one told you, you should be lying on your fuel level by 1/8th tank on your e-call macro so their fuel routing doesn't leave you high and dry somewhere.
>>
>>14042401
I've never run into an issue with being anywhere close to low fuel from their routing. No one told me about the 1/8th thing, I just always rounded down on my e-call fuel readings inherently.

I've always preferred Love's to any other truck stop, points system works for me. I dislike the TA/Petro though, probably something engrained from my first shitty mentor taking me to them for all rests.

How goes L/O? Are you mentoring or just burning yourself out to make truck payments and stay afloat?
>>
>>14042567
It goes well, we're a couple team. 579 pete. I'm the fag from the other thread that was telling you to watch out for your truck number and made another post about the info in quick notes.

We run 5-6k a week. Truck grosses between 6-7k a week and we bring home 1000-1300 apiece. Sometimes a little more or less depending on fuel consumption.

Got about 6k in maintenance, went lease in june. Things have been good. It's not all doom and gloom, you just have to have some work ethic and watch your numbers to make it.

The biggest thing that kills people is spending the trucks money like it's theirs.

We just got on the miller coors account out of salt lake, time will tell if it's better than OTR

Any dickweed with a Master's and a McJob is still 'employed' according to those statistics.

Now I'm not one of those bitter souls that thinks all college is pointless and everyone who goes there is a moron by default, but it is a big decision people need to think harder about. Not everyone belongs in college, nor should everyone. It's supposed to be an elite institution but it's very quickly turning into a big, expensive joke

Its been an expensive joke for a while now. I dropped out of college twice about 15-ish years ago because it was a joke back then. I drive a forklift now and actually make a little more than what I would have made if I had gotten a degree.

It used to be that people wanted experience over education, now they want education, but we are beginning to get to a point that its being recognized that education is worthless. The job market will start giving preference to uneducated people with experience again in the next couple of decades.

All this secondary education talk brings up some good points. Not everyone needs a 4 year degree to be comfortable. Not everyone has the discipline for a highly skilled 4 year program. Technical schools usually take at most 2 years and can be the doorway to a blue collar job that most people have been conditioned to look down upon. I'm not talking about the for-profit tech school though.

I'm fortunate enough to have had a decent understanding of the career I intended to pursue, which required the skills honed through a 4 year program. But as a military brat not shy of long road trips, I've always held getting my CDL as a viable option were it all to run a muck.

I thought I had the determination to hash out a CS program, but the calculus destroyed my GPA. In a hail mary, I switched to Computer Information Systems and now work as a systems administrator for a large communications company. Currently the industry is running into rough patches as the giant old communication businesses scramble to redefine their model and stay pertinent in a cloud age. I may be let go as the industry settles into its new groove, so a CDL will always be sitting in the back of my mind.

Uhaul will actually rent you a pickup for towing, but the mileage charge is the same $0.89/mile as the box trucks, and will rape you on a long highway trip. He'd be lucky to keep it under $400 for the whole day.

It would be cheaper to rent a full-size truck from a standard rental company, and just fail to mention that he'll be towing with it.

I made an A in Calc one, but I haven't taken the harder calc 2 yet. Didn't YBJ have two sleepers slapped together to make one big sleeper?

Also, traveled from Miami to Savannah overnight to visit grandmother in the hospital, and I'd just like to ask:what the fuck, guys? Every rest area, every weight station, every truckstop it seemed like was overfull with trucks to the point where they were spilling over to the on/off ramps and the streets. Is the holiday rush that large? That many trucks with the same shutdown times on their HoS? Just a lack of trucker friendly parking?
>>
>>14050100
That last bit, in combination with the fact that HOS regulations require us to stop once we hit 14 hours after first on-duty status. Most trucks start and stop at about the same times.
>>
>>14050100
No. There was an integrated sleeper and one bolt on sleeper. That pic is a daycab with two bolt on sleepers. Single bolt on sleepers are available that are longer than the both of them combined.

Truck parking has always been a problem, and it's only gotten worse in the last 10 years. HOS prevent the bulk of drivers from doing anything that makes sense, like getting loaded, driving 4 hours, shutting down for 5 hours to avoid afternoon rush hour, then drive another 6 hours to their destination, and sleeping another 6 hours before getting unloaded when the receiver opens in the morning.

What you saw was normal 365 days a year parking clusterfucks. It'd make sense to allow parking in parking lots of business that are only open 9am-8pm or so, but a few gross fucks ruined that for everyone, so there are thousands of extra trucks fighting for parking spaces. If it gets past 4pm in some places your odds of finding a parking space are slim to none until about 8am the next day.

The only pickup truck I ever rented was a Nissan Frontier from Hertz, and it had a class III reciever. Obviously they did not provide a drawbar.

I think rental fleets tend to order certain options simply to inflate the resale value. I know that's why they often buy hatchbacks when sedans of the same model are thousands cheaper; it would make sense if they did the same thing with tow packages.
>>
>>14052575

Rental fleets tend to be auctioned off though rather then being sold to the public, who would actually care about what its worth.
>>
Took them eight and a half hours almost to the minute. And it's all loose boxes, nothing on pallets. Were they fucking loading the trailer by hand, box by box?

etc.

I don't doubt that the smaller guys dump their cars on auction, but most of the big chains sell through their own dedicated in-house retail outfits. With the sheer volume of cars big rental outfits churn through, they'd be giving up a lot of money if they just sent them all to auction at 60,000 miles. If they can get just a few hundred above auction per-car, that can add up to big bux.

Have fun at the offload.

So my boss called me this afternoon, and he wants me to run this Key West route where all I do is Tropicana and Naked Juice. I have to play salesman and delivery driver. But I make like 80¢ per case on commission instead of 15¢. It's only a few cases per stop, so it is easier on your body.

Basically I drive a refridgerated straight truck down there Monday morning, hit a few stops on the way. Monday night stay at a Marriot hotel in the keys, service Key West all day Tuesday, Marriot again Tues night, then drive back Wednesday and hit a few stops thru the Keys on the way back. Then Thursday and Friday, I run a normal route back here.

I'm riding down there with the current guy in a week or two so I can see how it works. If I still want it, it's mine.

I really don't even want to think about it too much until I actually go on the route. It can't be worse than the regular daily routes.

There's one other driver who is willing to do it if nobody else will, but most of the other drivers have family and kids and want to be home. And he said the people that have been applying from outside the company haven't been great. Only one person he actually wants to interview. But I will get it before the guy interviewing if I want it.

I've only ever showered at Pilot/Flying J, and they're always remarkably clean, plus the facilities are all newly renovated. My only complaint is that I have sensitive babyman skin and some of them have the water pressure cranked up to 11, feels like standing under a hail of hot needles.

Three pairs of leather gloves and some hot hands if you're a little bitch. Put wet gloves on the dash to dry out before putting them away.

A folding shovel is a good idea if you're a van driver without room on your load bar rack for a real shovel. I prefer a square shovel for clearing ice off pavement and my trailer.

A 10 ton+ tow strap will get you out of some bad situations fast. Even if you're alone, you can run it through the holes in your wheel and over the tire tread a few times just to get you off an ice patch in a drop yard. I do not suggest using a chain for tugging, since when they break, it gets ugly.

Always carry enough food for at least 8 days. Since people will say 3, but you'll burn that up, and either forget, or not have a chance to restock before the next time you're stuck.

Snow goggles are nice if you'll be working outside.

Get a hat that covers as much of your head as possible, but avoid ski-masks, since they cause more problems than they solve.

An ice scraper with brush at least 3' long. Some guys carry the ones with an extending pole, but I only get it off my windows and mirrors, then don't bother moving until my windshield wipers are thawed off the glass, and by that point, the engine is hot and the glass is thawed.

Carry a propane torch and a 3lb hammer for breaking loose frozen brakes/tires frozen into ice. If you have an inverter, get an electric kettle to help with such things.

I use isopropyl alcohol to clean the inside of my windows, at least 91%. However, in winter, after you clean your windows, make an "X" across them and buff it into the glass with a dry paper towel. This will prevent fogging.
>>

>>I prefer a square shovel for clearing ice off pavement and my trailer.
I drive a dryvan, I'm assuming the "ice off my trailer" might not apply to me?

>>Always carry enough food for at least 8 days. Since people will say 3, but you'll burn that up, and either forget, or not have a chance to restock before the next time you're stuck.
Yeah, I need to work on this. I generally only store enough for 3. And even that is food that might quickly spoil (apples, bananas, hummus dips etc). I dont have an inverter so microwaves/slow cooker are out which leaves me with room temp or cold foods only.
What do y'all carry to eat? I'm trying to not be an overweight neckbeard as much as possible....

>>...but avoid ski-masks, since they cause more problems than they solve.
Lol'd irl

>>...then don't bother moving until my windshield wipers are thawed off the glass, and by that point, the engine is hot and the glass is thawed.
Yeah, I hope to never be in a position where I have to move before my engine is properly heated up etc. I've heard drivers say they legit don't ever turn off their trucks in extreme cold, even sleep and refuel with it running. Is that good? I have a bunk heater that I turn on when I turn off my truck atm.

>>I use isopropyl alcohol to clean the inside of my windows, at least 91%. However, in winter, after you clean your windows, make an "X" across them and buff it into the glass with a dry paper towel. This will prevent fogging.
Touché. So some good paper towel (bounty etc) shouldnt causing THAT much streaking, right?

Also, I've heard about "pressure braking" before stopping for the night to help dry out the brake lines etc. What's that about?
Also, I've kept some methyl (hydrate?) On me to use on my trailer airlines if they freeze over etc.

Seriously tho - Thanks a ton for this, TF. I'd give you a blowie if you were at my local Flying J. Srs

I've got a flatbed, so I usually have to clear the ice off before loading.

I carry canned everything. Peaches, pineapple, corn, peas, spam, tuna, tomatoes, olives that are all fine eaten cold. Most drivers without inverters carry vienna sausages and crackers of some sort, since they're both good for more or less a year. One of my trainers always had a 2 gallon jar of whole pickles. Don't forget to carry at least 2 gallons of drinking water. I prefer carrying mine in smaller bottles since the jugs tend to tip/tear/sweat.

Older trucks were usually just variants of stationary industrial engines until emissions rolled around. After 2009 most motors in trucks are worthless as industrial engines, since they tend to eat/clog/warp themselves under prolonged idle. You shouldn't shut an engine off below -20F without fuel and block heaters running.

You can use newspaper to clean windows without streaking. It's less a matter of what cleaner you use, and more what technique you use. One wet pass to actually clean the windows, then another pass with a dry paper towel to finish drying it and buff out streaks.

Pressure braking is more critical when you've been cruising all day from a hot and humid climate going into a cold dry climate. All the moisture in your air lines will precipitate out if your air dryer isn't working properly, so a few good 100lb stabs will help drive out any moisture, and blow some road moisture away from your air ports so they don't freeze over.

More important than carrying methanol is making sure your air dryer is working properly. The dessicant cartridge needs to be changed out every year at the latest. Bring up the issue with your service writer the next time you're getting a PM. Usually an inspection of the system will yield service they can easily advise and get approval for.

Also you will see on some trucks, they have a little outlet that you can plug an extension cord into. They are normally on the outside of the cab by the driver's door. I believe that's for the engine block heaters.
>>
>>14057492
Some run off diesel, some are electric. Some fuel heaters run off coolant, so pair that up with a fuel burning block heater and you've got heat for the cab, engine, and fuel with no power cables.

Batteries in the mixer are probably the simplest solution.

The lights are all 12 or 24 volt DC anyway, so it wouldn't be much extra effort to just bolt a spare battery or two to a mixer blade

Am I in the perfect position to go into OTR trucking?

> 23 yrs old
> no wife/gf
> no kids
> no pets
> no house or any other debts/obligations

I've been considering doing this a long time now, I could see myself staying out for months and just concentrate on saving money for my next stage in life.

There's a trucking school about 45 min from my house, they offer a month-long CDL training course. I have a couple different ways I can pay for the tuition.

> personal loan from my credit union or bank
> state Division of Voc Rehab (DVR), they've helped me out before with various things and I know they often pay for trucking school

Only thing that bugs me is that I'm currently in college for IT networking and my parents are gonna be major bummed if I decide to take a break and try this trucking thing.

I don't mind my current major, but the thought of doing a 9-5 existence among the normies just bugs me. I like being on my own and have no particular attachement to home.

Should I do it?
>>
>>14060356
I'd say finish your degree and then go trucking just in case you hate it and want to go back to a cushy 9-5. But that's just me because I want to go back to school.

Depending on what profession you will make the same, if not more trucking. The view will be better too,and with the certs having to be renewed every 2-3 year's keeping and holding them is pointless for me in network security I was consistently the least paid, even when I had to know everyone else's job to function.
I'd finish it anyways just to have the peice of paper you'll probably find it increasingly stressful and can then start trucking knowing you gave it a shot
>>
>>14060356

Might as well. Just be lonely and unhygienic forever.
>>

Finish school. Then decide.

At least if you have a college degree you open lots of job opportunities. Where I work they require a college degree, doesn't even matter what it is in, but you have to have one. Lots of places are like that, or you'll at least be way more likely to get the job.

I road tripped this from DFW to just west of Denver and back thanksgiving weekend during all that snow and ice bullshit.

fucking terrible idea.. fucking terrible. I could barely see half the time because the wipers froze solid, then the windshield washer froze over, then the fuel door froze shut so ever time I stopped I had to spray the fucker down with de-icer and then bang on it so I could open it to re-fuel. and summer tires in 4 inches of snow is no bueno. ice got nearly a 1/4 inch thick over the whole front end by the time I got to my destination in colorado, and pretty much stayed there for 3 days until i got back down to NM where it was 35 degrees instead of 5..

also had shingles on the underside of my left arm at the time. and the car is a stick so I drive with left hand, shift with right hand.

I just started driving dump trucks for my company and they want me to skip scales. I read that you get a misdemeanor offense and a fine if you get caught. Is this true? I'm out here in California and I'd like to know before I commit to driving them all the time.
>>
>>14064399
All I can say is the pay better be damn good because you're taking on a lot of financial risk for their profit.

Consider, passing a scale house is a fine. If you do get caught then it's guaranteed there'll be an inspection (because why else bypass a scale?) and every dump truck I've ever seen has been a rolling book of DOT violations. Oh, and of course the truck will be weighed and if it's overweight then the fine is typically $1.00/lb. And it's all on you, buddy, because it's driver responsibility to make sure the vehicle is compliant in all respects at all times. The company? Pffft. They'll just say "driver responsibility" and probably fire your ass into the bargain leaving you with possibly tens of thousands in fines and no job.
>>
>>14064500
I.e. don't. The odds of you going by a scale are slim tho as dumpers don't go far.
>>
>>14064541
If he's in SoCal though the coops are placed such that it's difficult to get around them since there's not many alternate routes without going way out of the way. And I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find the alternate routes are load zoned less than any truck weighs
