I also don't care for this.
My Legacy has this, I drive it in "Sport" due to regular drive's obsession with 4th. Going up a 20% grade doing 30mph? You get 4th and the engine gets to struggle while you floor it trying to get it to go.
"Sport" makes it drive in a sane manner and chooses an appropriate gear for the load, gets better milage too.

Ford really should have built those. Use lots of Mustang parts to keep costs down, keep the nice design, and then call it the GT39 - one step away from the GT40. They could have given the Corvette a run for it's money, right untill about 1969, at which point Ford would be forced to put a big block into that Mach 2 concept. Somehow, I'm pretty sure a 428CJ would make it's way into that engine bay....
