Hey let me ask you guys something about driving ettiquette.
Let's say you are in the left turn lane at a green light (but not green arrow). So you are waiting to turn in the left turn lane but you must yield to oncoming traffic.
If you are at the front of the queue and the light turns yellow, do you more or less feel obligated to make your turn?
On the one hand, people in the queue behind you want you to go as quickly as possible, and the yellow gives you the opportunity to turn as oncoming traffic slows to a stop. On the other hand, oncoming traffic doesn't always stop on yellow, which would force you to take a red.
So what do you guys do? Do you take a late left turn, or do you tell people behind you to fuck off? Usually I don't take the turn for safety, but at the expense of making everyone behind me wait.

Where I live, most people generally tend to run the first second or two of the red light because they're idiots. So I tend to just wait another cycle, or call it quits and just go straight ahead next cycle if it's too busy (if I'm in a dual ahead + left turn lane). I don't put the car all the way into the intersection if I can help it, half over the line is good.
Also, trying to do the quick get out of the intersection when the light turns red is a REALLY good way to get a fine in the mail from a red light camera.

I pull forward while it's green so that I have to be let through, having already engaged in the turn. When the lights turn yellow and oncoming traffic stops at a safe point I go, getting out of the way before it ever becomes an issue.

The green for cross traffic has a delay after your red light. It means you have time to fully ensure that oncoming traffic is stopping/stopped before turning left in front of them.
You are supposed to be in the intersection already, over the white line. The people behind you are not (even if it's a huge intersection and has the space to do so), though this double claiming does happen at frustrating intersections a lot.
