Raise it of the ground a bit more, give it a stronger engine, and put a bit of aggresivenes into it's design (pic related coming stock with the car for example) and then we would be talking business, otherwise they sold you half a legacy/outback. Not quite. The Legacy GT/Outback XT is compatible with everything from the 08-14 WRX as well, as the Impreza moved up to the Legacy platform for that gen and uses the same EJ255. Forester struts bolt right on to an Outback if you desire the extra ride height.
Most of the FXT's were 4 speed autos too, manuals are extremely hard to find. Much more of the LGT/OBXT's were 5 speeds, and their auto was the brand new, less-shit 5 speed auto instead of the decrepit 4 speed auto in the FXT.

The ST-X concept didn't even exist until 2000 and the Baja didn't start production until July 2002.
I just googled it and the article was written in 2003. His main complaint was the plastic tacked onto the side, which most people are fine with on Outbacks and just about everything made since 2000 anyway. Burgerfats just aren't used to utes like Aussies make. It's a shame because I'd much, MUCH rather have a smaller ute than any of our ridiculous cruise-ship-sized full size pickups.
