first they killed a bunch of cars to kill off excess fat. Perfectly fine, even if it did kill the S-chassis.
The first clue was the new Sentra SE-R. The replaced the repliable and performance-friendly 2.0L SR20DE with the unreliable 2.5L QR25DE.

Then the 2002 Altima came along. It was a perfectly decent car, so long as you got the V6 instead of the 2.5L I4. But this led to a different problem. Now the Altima was just as powerful, more spacious, and cheaper than Nissan's flagship Maxima. So the Maxima got a new generation for 2004 that was a rush-job. The 2004 Maxima was little more than a slightly bigger V6 Altima. This meant the 4 door sports car image it had spent years to build was gone

And things got worse and worse from there until everything now has an unreliable CVT and Nissan has no tuning scene for any car that isn't over 80 grand.

Nissan owns JATCO, who makes their transmissions. Saying Nissan has no control over their CVT's is like saying Toyota has no control over the transmissions Aisin makes. Oh and Aisin is owned by Toyota.

And GM has been more reliable than Nissan since the use of CVT's became widespread. Buick alone consistently places in the top 10 most reliable brands.

My problem with it isn't the price, because Zs have been expensive for a long time now, but it's boring. The 280ZX and 300ZX were a lot more exotic, especially the Z32. They had turbos and unique styling. They weren't perfect, but had a lot more character. The new Z tries to everything well, which for the most part it does. It's almost as fast as the V8 muscle cars but is also a lot lighter and smaller. But at the same time, the V8 pony cars have V8s. That's cool, and makes you want to buy them. Even if they are >can'tturn they have a lot more emotion than the Z.

So your main complaint of the Z is it cost to much than it originally did. That's a fair complaint I suppose, the Z started off as a light weight sports car. But if were comparing late 60s and early 70s sports cars prices to today...

So you could get a brand new Corvette in 1970 for 30k, where today you can't even come close to a new V8 Camaro for the same money. A V8 Camaro cost less than the new V6 Camaro.

The Z wasn't even cheap for very long. Ignoring the price of every Z after the original, the original S30 cost 9k in 78 by the end of it's life cycle. That is about 32k in todays money. The car had gotten much heavier as well, about 2800lbs. By now Nissan realized the Z has priced itself out of the entry level sports car market, and with the recently introduced 200SX to fill that spot, there was no reason not to upscale the Z.

I would certainly love if Nissan introduced the new Z as a light weight entry level sports car again. To pretend the new ones price is blasphemous against the Z name or something is just stupid though.

US cars (and by extension most new cars in western countries) are more expensive because their base models include a lot more than a base model in a developing country. Even the cheapest new cars you'll find here have radios, CD Players (some even still have cassette players), decent crash test ratings, airbags, seat belts, and very very few come without air conditioning and power steering these days. In a developing country, those would all be premium features.

I think now it would be great if they downsized the Z again. The price point the Z is at just doesn't make much sense. The 30k range of sports cars doesn't make much sense for something like the Z, because it is still an entry level sports car but it cost too much. A car in it's price range needs to move a lot of volume to make money, which works for STIs and V8 pony cars because they have a cheaper model. If the Z had a cheaper model which sold a lot more that would lower production cost, and make a more expensive version profitable.

An R34 GTST had 280ps. The V35 also had 280ps, and weighed more. The V36 has 50 more ps, but also weighs over 500lbs more. The RB25DET can easily make more power too.

There is nothing wrong with the V6, its just boring. A turbo I6 is way cooler.

Its pretty damn ugly. At best, its an uninspired luxury coupe design.

The price isn`t huge, but it is a noticeable difference. In 2000, a Skyline GT25 turbo cost about 3 million yen. A year later the V35 cost 3.6 million yen, for a car with the same power and more weight. A new V36 Skyline cost 5 million yen in Japan with a 6 speed, a massive difference even with inflation for a car that is no faster.
