Buddy of mine has never had good cars.
First car was a MUSTANG v6 convertible. Not so bad on paper but not great. Had horrible issues he refused to address and ended up selling.
He bought a $1000 alero next and trashed it within 6 months.
Then on to a bubble Taurus which blew a trans.
So he bought another Taurus.
Which also blew a trans.
So he bought a newer Taurus.... Blew a trans.
He was given a really clean Buick something or other FOR FREE. Sold it and bought a $500 ford escort. Blew a trans.
Financed a Chevy hhr for $10k with 120k miles on it.
All this time I've been trying to warn him and he won't listen!!!

All this talk of blowing trannies is getting me moist

I have a friend like that
>his first car was a 96 Nissan altima
>thought it was the coolest shit
>had fuckload of miles and need a lot
>got rear ended was really his fault but got away with it
>"dude the insurance guy told me I'm ganna get 8 grand for it because all my high end shit like my spoiler and custom stereo"
>tell him no your going to get max 3 grand cause that's about what it's worth
>proceeds to call me an idiot and I don't know what I'm talking about
>wants an evo thinks he's ganna get an evo for 8 grand
>finally gets his check
>2.5 grand
>laugh into oblivion
>still thinks he can get an evo
>true to buy my co-workers base model riced out lancer
>she won't do ends up buying a Taurus
>finally takes a shit cause he dosent know how to do shit on a car and treated it like it was a racecar
>I could smell it running got all the time and that poor 3.0 lasted as long as it could
>ends up buying his uncles pos Isuzu rodeo for 1 grand over what it's worth
>still thinks it's the tightest shit

OP, you're a snob, holy shit.
Alero's are fine, and so are Buick's and HHR's They're all fairly bulletproof when not owned by complete morons.
>>
>>14004643
This post however, describes a man who should be taken out of the gene pool.
>>
>>14004686
So warning my friend of certain models to avoid makes me a snob?
Also trying to tell him to maintain a car makes me a snob?
I dun git et
>>
>>14004686
Also financing 10k for a hhr....
>>
>>14004711
That's about what they're worth, if it's one of the newer models.
>>14004702
No. Railing on perfectly decent cars makes you one. You said he had never had a decent car, but he clearly had an Alero and a Buick, and the HHR's are pretty mechanically stout.
Continue getting on his case about maintenance though.
>>
>>14004720
Wasn't railing. I never said anything bad about the Buick, alero, or hhr.
The Buick was nice as fuck. I'm just saying it was free and he sold it like an idiot.
The alero was a $1000 beater that he ran into the ground. Didn't say it was bad.
The hhr is fine but he over spent and can hardly afford the financing.
>>
>>14004735
ok. I can see that then.
Have you suggested he get a vasectomy?
>>
>>14004749
He refused even after 3 kids....

Idiot I worked with:

-first car was a Dodge Neon
-total piece of shit, didn't last long
-second car was a Pontiac Montana
-transmission shit the bed inside of a year, and he still owed about 7 grand on it
-third car was a Chrysler 300
-engine exploded because he kept putting the wrong grade of oil in it
-sold it to his father in law for a thousand dollars, he put a new engine in it and drives it around now
-fourth car was (is currently) a Dodge Avenger
-constant problems with CEL coming on
-water seeping through holes in firewall leaves 1/2 puddles in foot wells of car every time it rains
-air conditioning stopped working in the middle of the summer
-decides he needs another vehicle to balance out the unreliability of his current one, and to tote around his 3 small children (2 are babies)
-buys a CHRYSLER 200

This guy is the dumbest motherfucker I have ever met. Ever.
We even have a pool going right now, I have $20 in that says his Avenger stops running all together by spring time

>replacing an entire car because a $1500 part needs replacing

Is this really how most people think? I mean I know motherfuckers that would spend that much on an alignment/front end service/tires in a fucking heartbeat. I really don't understand this kind of reasoning unless the car is literally just falling apart around it.
>>
>>14004891

It's a calculated sale, in most cases. Or at least this is what I would believe.

Basically, if a car has a history of being unreliable, and you find yourself routinely spending ridiculous sums of money on repairs, there comes a time when you say "fuck it" and sell it. My dad bought a 1996 F150 XL in 2000. It had low mileage and he paid just over $15,000 for it. During its lifetime, of about 9 years, he spent nearly $12,000 in repairs on it. Not counting oil changes or fluid changes.

He got to a point where the torque converter was fucked, and said "why am I going to throw more money at this thing?" He'd already replaced most of the stuff, but certain vehicles just start to nickel-and-dime you after a while.

That's why you buy a Toyota or a Honda. Some cars are actually worth spending $1500 in a single shot, while others are not.

how the fuck do you blow a transmission i dont understand
>>
>>14004963

In automatics it's not usually the driver's fault, it's just a defect or shitty design. Chrysler is notorious for making shitty transmissions, especially as of late. They just use cheap alloys, tight tolerances, etc. and figure the manufacturing cost is still less than the potential failure rate and warranty repair that might be needed.

If they can make something for "X" amount, and figure it will fail 20% of the time, it may still be cheaper than making it for "Y" amount. "Y" amount, times every single vehicle made, will work out to be more expensive than "X" amount done on a partial basis (20% of the time) maybe once or twice in the vehicle's warranty period.

And they don't have to worry about reputation, because no one buys a North American vehicle based on "quality".

>Also financing 10k for a hhr....
I financed my HHR for 13k. Then I paid it off and sold it. I see no problem, anon.

Some people are just genuinely dim when it comes to cars and managing money. My dad is exactly like that. Destroys cars through neglect and instead of repairing, would just buy a new one. Or failed repairs that led to fried electrical systems and stuff like that. Or not changing the oil for 60 thousand miles, and then flying into a rage when the car finally breaks like it's the cars fault it never got maintained
>>
>>14005048
Even worse than chrysler is honda. They have the worst transmissions bar none. Granted 150-200k miles with a mix of city and highway is a reasonable life cycle for any automatic transmission.

You have never been right about anything in the past, and there's no way Honda makes a shittier transmission than Chrysler.

Honda's lack of quality is confirmed by ETCG and numerous other sources.
>>
>>14005215

>lack of quality

No, ETCG simply stated that Honda's quality control measures are not as good as they were in the early 90's. He even drives a Honda Element and has said it's one of the best, most reliable vehicles ever made.

This is true for literally every single vehicle manufacturer, with the exception of Hyundai. They are the only ones to have markedly improved the quality of their vehicles, but modern standards really only put them on par with Ford and GM.

Hondas are still far better than 90% of the vehicles out there. The only company that comes close to touching them is Toyota, some of their cars (including Lexus) are extremely well made.

You truly are an idiot.

He replaced the transmission I. His odyssey 3 or 4 times. Hondas transmission was so bad he even made a how to video showing the best way to drive it with a defective transmission.

I'll agree that toyota's are pretty reliable but hondas are fucking garbage. They're on par with kia and hyundai and a step below gm and ford. I mean really who puts a fucking timing belt on an interference fwd v6?

>>14005325

I wonder if he's like Frosty, where he actually believes he's right. Or if it's just intentional shitposting/bait.

>>14005327

The car is designed to downshift when you slam the gas, it's normal. Repeatedly doing that obviously wears the transmission more, you're putting in more torque and very quickly. Unless you drive like that every day, it shouldn't be a problem. Remember that vehicles are built to withstand normal use, + a bit extra. They're not hard-use; aftermarket companies make overbuilt parts for performance/offroad/racing enthusiasts. Most people don't need these parts, and they can't be justified in a higher pricetag.
