>Drive manual all my life
>Get in an automatic
At a stop light I lift off the brake
>car moves forward
What the fuck is this shit?
>>
That's how a torque converter works.
>>
>>14004026
Do all automatics do this?
>>
>>14004020
it's called magic
>>
>>14004047
Except certain supercars, yes. Have fun keeping the brake floored at traffic lights.
>>
Sometimes when I drive someone else's automatic I'll occasionally reach for the shifter before remembering that I don't need to.
>>
>>14004083
As opposed to the parking brake? That's a long ass wait time if you engage the parking brake at a light. And yet you can do that with a automatic also
>>
>>14004083
>flooring the brake
Somethings wrong with your car, it should just need a light pressure.

What. The brake pedal.

>>14004115
It was a bit of a hyperbole, you still need to hold it considerably harder than a manual car.
>>
>Drive manual all my life

>Rev it like a dumbass because it's in park
Well, what's the fucking point if you have to shift it anyway?
>>

Your post made it seem like it was extra work keeping the automatics brake pedal down

I've only ever driven a vehicle with manual brakes. How the fuck do you stop a car slowly with power brakes? They're awful!
>>
>>14004245
On the flip side, manual brakes are easy to jump from "nothing" to "locked wheels"

fuck. My mind was in race mode...
>>

>driving automatic truck

>try to step on clutch with my left foot
Oh yeah...

And with regards to the brake thing, some of the automatic trucks can be really annoying at stoplights. They have so much torque that your leg gets tired trying to keep the truck from rolling. I end up just dropping it into N.
>>
>>14004166

In a manual you can just sit there. No parking break, no break pedal. No work at all.
>>
>>14005121
You should still keep your foot lightly on the brake even if it's level, the last thing you need is to go flying through a red light because some woman texting rear-ended you.
>>
>>14005140

I do. I was just pointing out that the car will sit there on level ground.
>>
>>14005152
Oh, right. It sounded like advice

>Parking brake

Who in the fuck uses a parking brake at a traffic light? Tell me friend, when you stop at an intersection, do you ever see a car sitting there without its brake lights on? EVERYONE holds their foot on the brake at a light...
>>
>>14005173
I don't normally hold my foot on the brake, unless my car is rolling.
>>
>>14004279
i do this when im in race mode,
made my expedition sound like it had a super charger and easily accelerate to 100+ miles somehow or my speedo is fucked during that time
>>
>>14004245
Ahhh, are you drawing a distinction between modern power brakes and older model cars with power brakes?

I find it really easy to fine control the power brakes on a 1986 Corolla to stop nice and evenly, but driving around in the new Hyundai rental cars that work uses is a different feeling altogether, even if I hold my foot level on the brake pedal they seem to decelerate evenly for a bit and then they brake harder and harder as you slow down more until you're jolted to a stop.
>>
>>14004099
I remember driving in my dads automatic for the first time.
I wanted to park it, so I was about to shift it to reverse, fucking stomped on the breaks lol
>>
The new civic has a "hold brake" button. Is this on any other cars? I thought it was a cool idea
>>
>>14005166

Mah nigga
>>
>>14004279
What's even the purpose of the 1 and 2 gears in automatics? I've seen absolutely no one use them
>>
>>14008045
Might have some shit to do with hills or mud, not sure though
>>
>>14008045
Holding gears so you have more torque, like in snow i hold second going 30 mph, rear end slides less and no unexpected shifts from "right now i have grip" to "lol"
>>
>>14004213
Fucking this. Saved me from needing a jump a few times
>>
>>14004279
Always do this when I'm pulling trailers with the company trucks. Co worker that can't drive stick asks me what the 1 2 and od off button do. Wtf man.

Ehhhhh, as someone who who grew up with a manual, I have to defend autotragic here.

In some auto transmissions, you do have the ability to bump start it. It involves getting it to a much higher speed than a push start and and HORRIBLE for the transmission, but it can be done.

That being said, I miss the days of being able to push start my 1993 Geo Metro by myself with 50' of pavement.
>>
>>14005173
I always do it at longer lights, and see other people doing it several times per drive.

Same purpose first and second do in a manual.
>>

Can you believe this? Telsa got enough complaints from their former shitbox-driving customers that they actually implemented an optional software function that would cause the Model S to creep forward when the brake pedal was released.

I've done the "shift the wipers into D" thing and mashed the brake like a clutch when trying to coast. Driving a combination of manual and a little bit of column shift auto does weird things.
>>
Merdedes S Class I just drove when you stop, you then push the break a little harder and it goes into HOLD mode. Then you can let your foot off the break and just sit there. Keeps the brake lights on obviously, but, holds the brakes for you. On the dash a notice comes up. Pretty nice, probably in all of them now and lots of other brands but can't confirm.
>>
>>14005166
I know this feel
>>
>>14011595

I dont see why you cant just put the trans in Neutral.. That's what I do (when i feel like im going to wait a while of course)
>>
>>14011705
I guess if you have no hold function you can. It's better to have your foot on the brake in case someone runs into you though. Like even stopped someone behind you rolls forward, better to have the brakes down so them hitting you doesn't cause you to hit whoever Is in front of you
>>
