http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/2018-subaru-wrx-sti-news-specs-performance-hybrid/

>A report coming out of Australia indicates Subaru will join the ranks of automakers that are turning to electrification in a bid to boost both performance and efficiency when it hits the reset button on its WRX STI flagship.

>Subaru hasn’t decided how far it will push the hybrid envelope. The electric motor could simply help the flat-four spin all four wheels, or it could be mounted at the rear of the car in order to spin the rear wheels by itself. Regardless, the drivetrain will use a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and it will be tuned to generate approximately 321 horsepower, a roughly 20-pony increase over the current model. Whether an enthusiast-approved manual transmission will be offered is up in the air at this point.

When will it end?

Why can't they just kill them off and start a new model instead of butchering the name like this.

It's like hollywood just rehashing shit for the new "progressive" audience

>WRX is now a vegetable
>Evo is dead
>GT86 was DOA
>Corvette is dead within 5,000 miles
>GT-R never had a soul to begin with
>Everything else is just pigfat Mustang competitors
Why do cars suck these days? Why can't we go back to 1995?

So is Subaru pulling out of the WRC?
wtf?

Welcome to 7 years ago, dumbass.

>>14001882
desu "fairlady" soudns like a girls car senpai.

>>14001827
because you then you have to have the '95 EPA, the '95 gas prices, the '95 population in order to support that situation.

most of this electric motor garbage is due to american "emissions standards" and fuel economy standards.

subaru hasnt competed in WRC in years M8 2008 was their last season.

F-focus RS?

I wish WRC had a bigger car pool and all the manufacturers had a Rally car for the road offering.
Then maybe, just maybe they'd actually bother to make the STI good again.
>>
>>14001707
First off, hybridisation wouldn't be bad(I'll get into that later). Secondly, they won't ditch the manual. They're making an affordable enthousiast's car, with no prior experience with DCT development I know of. It's highly unlikely they won't just offer both - and market share will dictate if the manual will go away in the generation after that.

Drivetrain option 1 would be the current symmetrical AWD, with an electrical motor added before the transmission. Not the option they'll likely go for - it has no serious packaging advancements.

Option 2 would be a longitudinal boxer (as currently, but FWD only, with one or two electrical motors on the rear axle. Subaru isn't the kind of people who favor FWD biased AWD, so this will not likely happen. An advantage that this could have, would be that the boxer engine could be put behind the axle line, instead of in front of it, massively improving weight distribution.

Option 3 would be option 2 in reverse. Midmounted, RWD longitudinal boxer, with a set of true torquevectoring motors at the front end. I'm secretly praying for this, but it'll be hilariously expensive because Subaru would have to develop a new platform for this. Given how good (if underpowered) the new NSX is with this drivetrain layout, I'd love to see Subaru go this route.

Option 4 is what would be a compromise between RWD-biased performance and platform compatibility. A longitudinal boxer, behind the front axle, driving the rear wheels, with a set of torque vectoring motors on the front wheels. This is the one we should all be hoping for: if shifts the WRX from 50/50 split AWD to RWD biased, improves gas mileage, allows regenerative braking if done well, and the torquevectoring should make for a seriously quick car.
>>
>>14002823
Just keep the following in mind: Subaru has been differentiating the WRX from the regular Impreza bit by bit, and making it more and more of an enthousiast's car at the same time. A manual will likely happen.
50/50 split AWD will likely stay,
or be replaced by RWD biased AWD.
They'll probably add torque vectoring.
They might add regenerative braking.

Wouldn't you want to see a torque vectoring, RWD biased WRX? God help us if the aftermarket gets their hands on option 3 or 4....
>>
>>14002823
>>14002827
Forgot to mention: having a high voltage electrical system will mean they'll probably have electric turbo's to annihilate lag too. THey might even add torque fill if they decide to use a 3 motor setp up (two motors in the wheels, 1 into the transmission).
>>
>>14001827
why are gt86's shit again?

i actually really like them
>>
>>14002827
Except that would be almost exactly what they have done. The new gen has torque vectoring, rear biased awd, wrx is its own line. Technically it is brake vectoring, but they advertise as torque vectoring. Unless that was what you we're stating and I'm just a moron who read that entirely wrong (night shifts).
>>
>>14002823
option 1 seems most likely to me
>>
>>14002852
Slow as fuck
>>
>>14002856
Yeah, the new WRX has rear biased AWD, but only 60%. Option 3 and 4 as I mentioned them would be up to 100% RWD biased.
Brake vectoring, as you said, isn't true torque vectoring. Using two electric motors on the front end (where both brake and torque vectoring are at their most effective) would allow for better results thaan what Subaru is currently offering.

>>14002861
As long as it's not option 2, everyone would be happy (although the weight distribution benefits may surprise us all).
>>
>>14002869
Gotcha, I knew they were rear biased, just didn't know what percentage. Also, just didn't know if you had read up on the newest gen (you clearly have, just came off as you didn't know). I do agree though, I would like to see true torque vectoring. I have a new one, seems good so far.

fiesta road car is too cheap to have 4WD

VW's polo could have the 4WD system fomr

There's nothing Ford Fiesta about that car other than the body and the stickers. Same goes for all WRC cars.

I wish they were more production based.

>>
can someone explain why hybrids are bad
>>
>>14003747
Bad because they add weight, and remove driver involvement.
Good because they add torque vectoring, fuel mileage, and power.
>>
>>14003760
How do they remove driver involvement, are you talking about the assists in cars now?
>>
>>14003765
Electric motors do not hav e aidrect mechanical connection to driver inputs, those inputs have to be processed by computers, severely numbing feedback to the driver.
>>
>>14003538
And were just as cheap when new, had the same or more hp and are turbo. The FRS handles better but it's not like the Silvias needed much in that department anyways and it's been 15 years so it better handle better.

I'm so fucking triggered right now. How do I ban people for triggering?
>>
>>14003382
Blame the manufacturers. If the FIA asked them to work to Group A rules they'd just leave.
>>
>>14003781
The base model cost 14k to 18k depending on the year, which comes out to be about 25k today. In Japan, a new S15 turbo in 2000 cost 2.4 million yen. With inflation that's about the same as an 86 is in Japan.

I still like the 86, but I like the Silvia more. It did a lot more for it's time. The US spec S chassis is inferior in every way to the FRS though. Of course it will though, it's been 25 years since the S13 was introduced.
>>
>>14002852
Because it's just a fat Miata that's slower in a straight line and slower around a track. It could barely compete with the NC, which was already 7 years old when the 86 came to market.

>>14003443
Only weebs like the S chassis, or Nissans in general. Nissan hasn't brought a decent car to the US since the S30.

I know a guy with a Z31 Turbo. It's painfully slow; literally slower than a 240Z.
