The auto-trans in newer (read: expensive) cars is fairly high-tech. From personal experience alone, I believe current BMW and Merc autos (in sport mode) are far better than 99.9999% of people will be with a manual. It shifts faster than any human can, and it's adaptive to your driving style on top of all that.

Fucking hell. Why the hell do any of you yanks even care about fuel economy with petrol that's that cheap? I can't even imagine paying so little for petrol. What octane is standard unleaded in Texas?

I don't complain. I bought my first 4 cylinder two months ago, and it was because it was a jeep, not because it was a 4 cylinder. Every other car I've had was a V8 or straight six. I floor it everywhere I go and don't give a flying fuck.
But over the past 4 years, gas has averaged about $3 a gallon. So whatever that works out to pence per liter. A little higher than whats current, but it's still about half what you brits are paying.
87 is standard octane. There's the snake oil mid-grade which is bullshit so I don't pay attention to it. Premium octane is 93. Depending on what state you're in, standard may go as low 86 and premium as high as 94. So you guys have better quality gas, but I've never seen an issue with any of my cars from US grade gasoline, so I'll happily take the cheap gas.

One of my friends came at me for being a spoiled rich boy because I got a 2000 E39 from my parents.
This was after my mom drove it for a year and rear ended somebody in it. The damage is fixed, but as a result of the crash some other problems developed, now I don't even want to look at that ticking time bomb anymore.

I worked with a couple of guys at my last shop who were from Mexico. They would run their trucks back and forth from Fort Worth to Michoacan to visit family. One guy had to replace an exhaust manifold gasket on his Silverado and saw the valves were rusted when he got it off. The other guy had his engine disentegrate from really bad engine ping when he was down there; he thinks it was from the gas. So I hope the fuel is getting better.
