Hey /o/, /his/ here.
I recently decided to help my cousin/roomate find himself a new car.
The guy's an absolute madman in an old Civic, but he says he's getting bored of it and wants to buy another car to tune while I use the civic as a DD.

I was helping him look for a car when the Sentra caught my eye (SER V-Spec, specifically).
I'm considering buying one for myself now, but that's beside the point.
Are they good for tuning?
Do they have an "active aftermarket scene"? (his words, not mine)

I haven't decided on the style yet, he likes the older ones from the early 2000s while I prefer the newer looking ones

Thanks in advance.

shameless self-bump, also the model I like.

>wants a car with more aftermarket
Is your friend on the spectrum op?

Seriously though he should just buy a Miata like everyone else in his position.
>>
>>13994796
I don't think he wants "more", i think he honestly is looking for something different but isn't trying to self-fabricate the parts.

>just buy a miata
does not answer my question in any way

Avoid 2000+ Sentra SE-R's. All of them.
The 2.5L engine in them is known for problems. The biggest problem is with the precat disintegrating internally, pieces of the pre-cat backflowing into the engine, and destroying the engine from the inside out.
If You want a Sentra, get a 1990-1994 Sentra SE-R, 1995-1999 200SX SE-R, 1995-1999 Sentra SE, or 2000-2002 Sentra SE 2.0

All of these have the well loved SR20DE engine which is much more reliable than the QR25DE of 2000+ SE-R's

The ONLY way I can endorse buying a QR25 car is if he plans to swap the 2.5L out for a VQ35DE 3.5L V6. Pic related

Doesn't look like the pic you posted but it says 3.5 V6 from a Maxima?

That would be correct. That engine pic just doesn't have the plastic engine cover on. Trust me. It's the same engine.
BTW. I approve of that car. The biggest problem has been fixed. They threw the 2.5L in the trash!

The also swap the 3.5's in cars as old as the original 1990 Sentra SE-Rs!

So, assuming I buy this little baby for myself what would I be looking at for maint?
I was originally in the market for a DD (I drive a moped) but a possibly fun car would be...
fun?
Just be aware this will kind of be my first foray into working on cars, I have my cousin for help but if i'm in over my head let me know now.

Jesus Christmas guys

Fuck is wrong with you
Where did the shit opinions come from
>>
>>13994953
I drove a g35 for years. That isn't a VQ35DE. Since it's out of a Maxima it's probably also a VQ but it isn't the same engine from your pic.
Probably still a great engine though.

>meaningless babble
this is seriously the most autistic board I've ever been on. Either give me cons to actually owning the fucking thing or go back to your GTR thread.
>>

Hey man i told him to get a Miata.
>>
>>13995004
You want FWD
But want performance
Does not compute
>>
>>13994957
I have 3 locally under $6k, cheapest is $4500 under 150k miles

the SE-R Sentras from the early-mid 00s are around the same price

>Probably still a great engine though.
Its a VQ35DE. The RWD and FWD models just have different blocks so you can't use a RWD engine in a FWD car or vice versa.

>>13994976
It would be fine, but I would try to find an unmodified car for your first foray into cars. a Civic, or Corolla, or Cavalier or something along those lines.

>performance
I said I was in the market for a DD.
I said my cousin was in the market for a car with an active aftermarket/tuning scene.
Explain to me where that says "performance".
I don't give a shit about a drag strip.
I don't give a shit about your touge.
I don't plan on making this a track car.
I said having a DD that was fun could be fun.
>autism

>>13995030
If you look at the link a few posts up, I have an SER sentra for 3.7k.
It's the most expensive one in the area.
The cheapest Altima is 4,500 for pic related

>>13995045
>comes to /o/ asking about a car

i really do think so.
>>

>>

My mistake, sorry br/o/.
>>
>>13995065

>>
>>13995043
What's the logic behind me finding an unmodded car?
My logic in buying it is, if I really have an interest in it, this'll just about make or break it, because I know if I just go buy a DD it's going to stay a DD mostly because I won't have a reason to sink money into it, because I bought a cheap reliable DD.
>>
>>13995081
besides, if it all comes to the worst I can sell it to the cousin, he's kinda mad I found it first.
>>
>>13995081
>>13995084
So you want to buy a car with an engine swap, you have no idea who swapped the engine or how good of a job they did.
For all you know they could have cut corners on every step they took. But you still want just a DD without having to put money into it??
Kid just buy a corolla. If you want to have fun buy a miata.
>>
>>13995099
You make a fair point, and note the term "sinking money". It implies I am sinking money into it, and the term refers to putting an excessive amount of money into it.
I'm not going to let my car turn to shit just because it's a DD, you're a grade-a projector.
Should get a job in a classroom.
>>
>>13995069
/o/ told me RWD is always better so that means I need it

I got a 1992 Accord coupe senpai, no initial D ass shit in dat

The reason I say find a car that's unmodified is because, though interesting, you don't know the quality of the work done to it. In most cases of modifying, it isn't much to worry about. But an entire engine swap is not a simple change.

Also: good DD Cars with an active aftermarket/tuning scene:
Honda Civic/Acura Integra/Acura RSX/Honda CR-V
Toyota Corolla/Celica/Matrix/Pontiac Vibe
Volkswagen MK3, MK4, MK5, and MK6
GM J-body (Chevy Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire)
GM Delta platform (Saturn Ion/Chevy Cobalt/Chevy HHR/Pontiac G5)
Ford Focus
Nissan Maxima/Infiniti I30/I35
Mazda Miata
Dodge Neon/Chrysler PT Cruiser
Chrysler K-cars

>HHR/PT Cruiser aftermarket/tuning scene
oh my word
I think I'm going to give it a look, maybe run it by a mechanic, thanks for the input.

keep in mind, that by general consensus, the best 4 cylinder engines of the past 10 or so years are as follows:
GM Ecotec engine (pictured. Found in the later GM J-body cars and ALL GM Delta cars)
Honda K-series (found in ALL RSX's, 2002+ Civic Si's, and second gen CR-V's_
Mazda MZR/Ford Duratec (found primarily in 2005-2011 Ford Focus's and Mazda 3's)
>>
>>13995148
K24z7 here. I can confirm this.

>>13994757
Op you should look into RSX's. They might fit you/ your cousin.
