Lets say that someone wanted to go on a multi day road trip, and also that this person had a couple of friends that would be joining him, what way of communicating would you guys recommend? Am currently looking at the baofeng uv 5r but have no real knowledge of radios

Just talk to them senpai, sometimes it helps to just be clear with your communication.

FRS radios work great and are pretty cheap.
Never had a problem using them to communicate, even when doing big cruises in the mountains.

It's really easy and the license is good for 10 years. You don't even need to learn morse anymore.
