New Mercedes: Numb, boring shitboxes with considerably better interiors than equivalent BMWs; caters to geriatrics waiting to die.
New Audi: Surprisingly not shit, also still offers manuals on most models unlike MB and BMW (I may be wrong on the latter). Awful steering from what I hear, also.

It'd be better for OP to spring for a C350 if he has $40k. It's more more fuel efficient and makes more power thanks to turbos. Mercedes is also the only manufacturer that seems to be able to build a reliable turbo too.
