really wanted to buy a volvo like that to dd because:
big and turbo engines + lpg conversion
rwd
very rust resistant
built like fucking tanks
quite comfy
old volvo

but wasnt quite sure on the reliability and parts pricing front, so i went for the cheapest DD i could think of - mazda 626 running on lpg. the things do rust more than volkswagens, but they tend to run for ever, and mine is has no issues. my friend had a 850 diesel, and the thing was quite a dissapointment with stupid issues all the time. one time the fucking gas pedal went wonky and sent the car into limp mode- the replacement cost 500 euros in total with labour. fuck that on a 1600 euro car.

I like to get base model cars and modify them into what the performance model should've been. I hate being told that I need to get the performance model as a basis or its not worth modifying.
Getting the performance model as a base only makes sense to me if it comes with a completely unique special snowflake engine.

I disagree, beat to shit 850s are horrible, only becauase they will run for years with minimal care.

ours has been nothing but great, some parts are a little more complex and or expensive than the average shitbox but at 187k Ive only had to replace bushings, motor mounts and struts. mostly because i live where roads are shit
>>
i have enough cars

my friend has a 900,000 mile 240, but her dad is also a volvo mechanic and I know for sure the engine has been rebuilt at least once.
>>
What, a third one?
I ceded my 740 to my sister, who is loving it. Non turboed diesel is definition of slow but it does have decent amount of torgue, so it is useful in normal trafic.
Moms 960 kinda died few month ago thou, when fuel lines cloged and fuel pomp burned out.
Love them for built quality and no rust issues, even living where my shitty country still uses salt in winter.

It rumbles, grumbles and is an all around terrible piece of shit. Only redeeming qualities are RWD and ridiculously cheap and easy maintenance. insurances are also fuck you tier, might as well have none.

Mostly trading it in for some fresh air and variety, probably will buy another one later again or won't even sell this piece of shit in the first place.
It's fun when the snow hits the ground, awful during summer.
>>
>>13995980
Some of these tanks can actually get 2m miles without rebuild once
>>
>>13996284
Non turbo 740 have no guts. Try getting a turbo 940. 940 is the last of the rwd generation and they have fixed all the little flaws the 740 had. And turbo makes it so much quicker. You can get another 100hp just by chipping it and set the boost up to 11-12psi, will cost about $200 total. Lol

There are 2 types of volvo owners.

Got this '95 Volvo 850. I love it. It has light leather interior, plenty of space, even though it says 10 km/l on average, I can make it go 14. In town. It drives fantastic, no problems, it's the smallest engine, but the acceleration is still great. It has done 360.000 km, about here to the moon.
My friends love it. I can fit 4 people inside, with me. It has three point seatbelt in the middle, it has an arm rest when nobody occupies the middle seat, and it has a huge boot. I have been hauling all sorts of weird shit around for a lot of folks.
People around me loves it. It has this weird, unusual design about it. The tail lights running all the way to the roof, the head lights look squinty. It's a box, it's huge, and it's just a fantastic car, all in all.

But sometimes, when the wind blows in from the east, and the weather turns foggy, I do miss my old '91 Saab 900 sedan.

same story with 850s and v70s, and both changes happened around '97. They were trying to drive up revenue with a "new" car line I think; in '99 Volvo tried to merge with another company (Scania AB) and then were bought by Ford the next year.

mine hit a deer and that's how i was able to get it for $200, I was surprised at how little damage there was; busted grill, dented hood, busted fiberglass headlight assembly, decent but not unmanageable radiator leak, and the A/C condenser took it for the team.

Hilariously enough the intercooler, sandwiched between the radiator and the condenser, was completely fine.

Protip: don't hit deer head on and dead center going 60

Almost clipped a deer over the weekend.

>Suddenly deer strolling into the road from the left

Hey if you have the money and trust the shop, there's nothing wrong with it. It goes wrong when some mook with no wrenching experience buys any old car (bonus points if it was b/c he heard it was reliable) and then complains that basic maintenance on a 15+ year old vehicle is unmanageable due to shop labor fees.

Was my first one aswell

Got it at a very reasonable price from a family friend/old teacher colleague of my fathers, and also the guy I bought my first moped from at 13. Had new tires, needed new shocks and the door-linkage for the drivers door needed some realigning as the door was not properly shutting

Had it for just a few months before I got the acceptance-letter for school I had no expectations of getting into on my first try, and realised it wouldn't be all that great a daily driver.

Sold it for slightly more than I got it for, seeing as it now had new shocks, the underside completely cleaned and rustproofed, door fixed aswell as having new sparkplugs, oil filter, air filter and axles greased

Great fun, and I'll end up owning one again in the future unless I manage to get my hands on a TP21, a Pinz or a C303

Hey wait a minute. I'm not usually the agressive kinda guy, I used to drive a Saab, and I really like just to float around, without much ado. In trafic, I always let other people in, and I'm generally what you would call a boring driver.
But in the 850, something grabs me. It doesn't exactly encourage aggressive driving, and it's interior are pretty low key. Yet something grabs me. The sound of the engine when I rev it, the exact steering, the acceleration, even in my edition, which is the weakest, it feels as though it wants to race. Why does it have this hoonability?

>Just bought mine

>cheap to maintain

How could you possibly know that already?
I bought a MK1 Focus cause all reviews (of the Euro version) told me it drives nicer than other hatches, is reliable and has a good build quality.

Turns out it drives like a limp dick and every week something breaks.

>why 850 posses such immense hoon?
it just do.

I'm also a safe driver, and am used to driving shitboxes both fwd and rwd from vans and trucks to pontiacs and subcompacts.
This box is different; It is everything it should not be.
It's fast despite 5 cylinders under 3.0L; it handles well despite massive understeer, accelerates fast despite autoslushbox; it's immensely easy to work on, which is good because most were abused and neglected by the kids of the original owners.

Its hoonability has infected me br/o/s
